Stereo Nasty - “Twisting The Blade” - 2017
A heavy metal album in the classic NWOBHM style. All your heavy metal tropes are ticked; fast paced rage-stravaganzas, slower paced riff driven songs with belted vocals, neoclassical solo work, and of course some more ballad-esk moments with plenty of feeling.

Weregoat - “Pestilential Rites of Infernal Fornication” - 2017
Some fuzzy Black/Death metal in the vein of Blasphemy or Proclamation. Expect non-stop blast beats. I feel like this had the potential to be a much stronger album than it was, although it wasn’t bad at all, even if it did get a little samey at times. ---|6/10|---

Ex Deo - “The Immortal Wars” - 2017 Evviva il coltello! The return of Roman themed death metal. I don’t listen to much symphonic death metal, so Ex Deo are always an interesting change of pace to my ears. Although admittedly that also means I don’t have much of a reference point for the genre. Some of the tracks (Rise of Hannibal for example) had a more pronounced symphonic and grandiose atmosphere, while others took a more straight forward approach. ---|5.5/10|---

Exhumed - “Death Revenge” - 2017
It’s been a good year for death metal. A decent album by Exhumed, not one of their best works or their worst. Some of the solos were pretty tasty, like in the eponymous title track. Particularly enjoyed the OSDM style use of horror movie-esk intro’s and outro’s; it’s sadly under utilized in most modern death metal.

The Black Dahlia Murder - “Nightbringers” - 2017
Clocking in at 33 minutes this album is a little shorter than usual (although some might consider that a plus), however it seems a higher quality output. Possibly one of their best albums to date, “Widowmaker” in particular was a track that captivated me immediately. ---|9/10|---

Dying Fetus - "Wrong One To Fuck With" - 2017
What is there to say? They haven't lost it, this is exactly what you want from a Dying Fetus album; fast paced, heavy, and plenty of fun riffs and guttural vocals.

Goatvermin - "Detruire" - 2017
Black Metal with a Death Metal influence from the infamous French underground scene. A darkly tinted album in a similar vein as Archgoat. Generally pretty solid.

Succumb - "Succumb" - 2017
Very erratic, and as much as that can be great, I felt like in this album it was not. Seemed to offer little enjoyment, and annoyingly poor vocals that dash any small potential the rhythm might of had. Pretty boring.

Cenotaph - "Perverse Dehumanized Dysfunctions" - 2017
Some good guitar work, some good bass work, however on the whole a fairly uninspired and repetitive piece of Death Metal.
Asphyxiated Embryonic Abnormalities was probably my favourite track.

Hexhammer - “Hexhammer” - 2017
A retro audio assault of Speed Metal, with a dash of 2000′s era Black Metal. Fast paced and aggressive with plenty of high octane riffing like anything approaching Speed Metal should be. In the interest of full disclosure I should acknowledge this is probably getting a higher rating than others would give it, because I'm a sucker for an 80's Speed Metal vibe.

Condor - “Unstoppable Power” - 2017
Old school styled Thrash harking back to the era where the genres lines were less clearly defined. A clear influence from the ilk of early Slayer, with an edge of Possessed to it. Favourite track was 83 days of Radiation.

Phobia - "Lifeless God" - 2017 A well rounded Grindcore album with minimal variation, but decent riffs and vocals that place it slightly above the usual fare.

Cloven Hoof - "Who Mourns For The Morning Star?" - 2017
I was expecting a total let down after so many years absence, and they more or less delivered that. Most of the songs fall short, few hit the mark. Star Rider and Bannockburn were probably the two best tracks.
