A tragic tale of desire. The desire of a man for his lover and unborn child, so strong it created a curse. A desire of a woman to uncover something bigger than herself and to make it big academically. And finally, the desire of another man to have both his loving and devoted wife and his young mistress. All punished with death. This film has definitely helped to shape the horror genre from its early 90s release. A killer, more than just anger and bloodlust, Candyman explores a tragic and sympthic villain bound to the earth by his own pain, regrets, and longing for power that he was not afforded in his life. Power that would have allowed him to live in peace and love the women he chose. Something I love about this character is that he is extremely powerful, more than capable of brutality (and we've seen him use it), but for Helan, he doesn't use it. He wants her willingly. While he does use tactics to try to sway her opinion, he always asks her to be his, never forcing her. "Be my victim," he asks. Gently but sternly. I personally think Helen was a fool for not going willingly to him. Could you imagine what a power couple they would have been? And Candyman would never cheat on her, unlike Trevor. Maybe I'm just a candyman simp, but c'mon.... he's really the whole package. This films commentary on casual racism and how it affects communities is something very powerful. It's the kind of thing you see every day on the news. A minority group basically walled off from the rest of the community forced to live in the poorest cities trapped in the system designed to keep them there. And when do they find something to believe in? Something just for them? It's turned into a monster. But perhaps I'm just looking too much into it. On a last side note, the score for this film is phenomenal. I would say the piano theme has to be just as iconic as the Halloween theme or Friday the 13ths "cha! cha! ma! ma! It gives me chills every time

CHERRY FALLS (1999)

A fun little twist on one of the most classic horror movies troupes: "Only virgins can be the final girl/guy." This film flips that right on its head, putting only the most innocent on the chopping block. While the premise is interesting, the execution of this film is... very of its time. It's campy. It's awkward. Some parts are so cringey that it's almost uncomfortable to watch. However, in my opinion, that doesn't make this film bad. It actually makes it quite charming. the characters are ridiculous but very likable. While the overall vibe is nothing more than a popcorn flick it does take a very important look at how assault can really fuck up a person, how hard it is to break toxic cycles, consent, and corruption in police institutions. Unfortunately, most of these points do get overshadowed by the more humorous scenes in this film, such as the cherry popping party. Yes, this does happen in the film, and yes, it's as ridiculous as it sounds

URBAN LEGEND (1998)

Campy, chessey, and a really fun watch. Urban legend is one of those movies you watch at a sleepover when you're way too young to be watching it, and it just stays with you. I can remember being a young pre-teen and watching this, and the "aren't you glad you didn't turn on the lights" scene scared me so badly that I had to turn it off. Ah, the innocence of youth. While this film isn't spectacular in any sense, I think that's what makes it such a great watch. It doesn't try to take itself too seriously and loves to poke fun at itself. It also takes urban legends we all grew up with, the ones that scared a whole generation so badly they couldn't sleep without the lights on and made they into a reality. Sure, they took it to an extreme, but extreme is where the minds go when left to itself anyway. Urban legend also does the killer character right. The killers identity, while not too hard to guess, is still shielded by not 1 but 2 red herrings, and you have to give it credit for that effort alone. Our killer is also not your typical slasher either because at least they did try therapy first. On a last random point, Urban legend is home to an iconic goth baddie Tosh, and for that, I will always love it. 2025 is the year we start admitting this film is amazing

THE LOVED ONES (2009)

The Australians have done it again with this refreshing take on the slasher genre. it's no secret that there's a distinct lack of female antagonists in the male dominated horror genre. We have lots of " final girls" for sure. When we do get the rare female, she's usually cold and calculating with her crimes. Her motivations, usually driven by a desire for revenge, or perhaps she's been twisted into a monster by abuse, dished out by her friends, family, bullies, lover, etc. Instead of reusing these same old troupes, The Loved Ones shows us a much more relatable antagonist. Lola, while she has her clever moments, is mostly ruled by her emotions. her motivations are not any noble cause, not her way of lashing out due to being pushed to the brink. She operates solely on a Lola wants Lola gets cause. Her childish attitude and enabler father create one hell of a monster in its right. She's brutal, erratic, and prone to tantrums when things don't go exactly to her plans. This makes her absolutely unhinged and a terrifying oppentute. The gore in this film is amazingly brutal and creative. It's a shame this film is so overlooked.

An overlooked gem of a movie. This film has an amazing grasp on how to do a monster movie right. Instead of shying away from showing the creature design or only showing it in dim lighting, this film lets you get right up and close with its creations. While it's true that in some instances, the makeup or prosthetics used to make the creatures look a little cheap or lazy overall, the SFX team did an amazing job on this film delivering some really great work. Lovecraftian horror is one of those genres that's really easy to go overboard with, but this film seemed to know where the line was and had a lot of fun playing with it. It surprises me that this film isn't more popular with its excellent gore and vibes reminiscent of 80s and 90s cult classics like John Carpenters' " The Thing." It's creepy and has a great atmosphere. Just when you think you have it all put together, something new pops up and totally changes the game. Highly recommend

Let's hear it for the film that inspired a whole generation of weird goth girls. This film deeply rewired my brain at such a young age, and I'm so glad it did. Behind the gimmicky CGI and somewhat awkward character interactions is a beautiful coming of age film with all the spooky witchcraft themes that horror fans crave. It reflects beautifully on female friendship and how sometimes toxic they can be. It also tackles themes like racism, bullying, and self-confidence. I also adore how depending on how you look at the film, the "villain" of the film could be multiple different characters or none at all. After all, most of the main cast are teenagers and products of their circumstances. Any one of them could have gotten carried away with the new power and control over their life. RIP Nancy Downs, they could never make me hate you. A cult classic for sure and for good reason

A film that changed my brain chemistry. It's fresh, it's gory, and it has a message. Tackling hot topics about fame, female beauty standards, and ageism, this film is subtle at first until the last 20 minutes hit you right over the head. The anxiety Elizabeth has about her place in Hollywood and life itself is palpable. The second scene of the installing and aging of the Walk of Fame Star is a beautiful metaphor for fames' shelf life as time marches on. Because she's just turned 50, she's now disgusting and disposable. A real ironic outlook considering the most disgusting thing in this movie was the upclose shot of Dennis Quaid eating shrimp. Not only does this film have gripping commentary about ageism, sexism, and oversexualisation of women and feminism it also has great potential to become the horror film of the decade. The effects, makeup, and prosthetics in the film are disgusting and disturbing. They leave a lasting impression that would keep just about anyone up in the middle of the night. And the acting? Demi Moore certainly proves that her age has certainly not affected her ability to entertain and horrify the viewer. It is truly a must-see film.

TOURIST TRAP (1979)

Not my cup of tea whatsoever. This film has a terrifying premise but ended up being nothing more than the boring love child of House of Wax (1953), Psycho (1960), and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). I think the film took itself way too seriously for the effect and makeup capabilities on set. The kills were over the top in a way that made it jarring to watch instead of scary or even humorous. While I think it did have some interesting moments, they were so few and far in between it that it felt like a waste of time to finish it. A lot of the action is just a dude in a crappy mask walking about and moving things and people. I also don't understand how a man who can take being shot with blanks 3 times can walk it off, but a light smack upside the head with a mannequins arm knocks him clean out. All I ask from movies is consistency if you can't give me accuracy. Overall, don't waste your time.

It is an absolute masterpiece of cinema. The costumes, the set, the casting the 5000 LIVE TRAINED RATS!!!!! Everything was a love letter to both the original source material and horror fans. I admit I was a little skeptical about Lily-Rose Depp leading as Ellen, but I must admit my socks were blown clean off by her performance. Her charcater was so beautifully raw. I mean, the scene where she's so angry she basically starts to have a seizure. That was all Depp, and that's the kind of talent you just can't fake. I think I'll seek out other films she stars in simply because of how impressed I was. Speaking of amazing performances, can we give a round of applause to Mr Bill Skarsgaurd. His interpretation of Count Orlock was award worthy. The amount of voice training he went through to both deepen his voice and get the accent must have been insane. I love that Eggers decided to make Orlock not only an old man with a mustache like the book the character was based on but make him a predator like the original vampires were supposed to be. It would have been far to esay to make him older but handsome and charming like many other vampire films do, and while those films do have their place I specifically like vampire films that showcase their true nature like this one does. I was also glad to see that instead of making the film its own thing, it was a retelling of the classic but with much more depth and context added to the charters. It made them feel more like real people living real lives versus the original, which very much just felt like characters on a screen, in my opinion. My final note is the very last frame of the film and how grotesquely beautiful it was. If you're able to, I would definitely recommend seeing this one in a theater before it leaves.

THE RANGER (2018)

Where has this movie been all my life? This little flick is a total underrated gem in regard to campy slashers. The very idea of a deranged forest ranger hunting down punks because they violated the park code is outright ridiculous and, in my opinion, reason enough to check this movie out. The ranger' very animated actions paired with his cheesy 1 liners about garbage in the forest keep the film light and bordering on horror comedy. The wardrobe in this film also was incredible, showcasing different styles of punk clothing in a very authentic way, with most of it looking homade and / or DIYed. A lot of the scenes in this film were shot beautifully with help from the gorgeous scenery. However, campy, this all sounds like there are still some very powerful and unsettling scenes from this film. I was especially disturbed by the ranger crawling around naked except for a wolf pelt and howling like a predator. Absolutely unhinged behavior, and I have to hand it to the actors' performance because that scene has not left my head since I watched it. I also liked seeing Chelsea go from an annoying wannable punk to a strong woman capable of saving herself and reclaiming her life. I didn't need the "wolf recognizing wolf"symbolic scene, but other than that, this film is definitely worth your time.
