#hot take. richie was hyperaware of his feelings for eddie when they were pre-teens/teenagers, because the romantic idealization was shadowing all the usual friend-stuff with eddie in his head, which resulted in him suppressing them all throughout years (cue exclusively not remembering eddie while remembering the rest of the losers when mike calls him 27 years later. suppressment turned memory loss in the consciousness) meanwhile his feelings for stanley was always so entangled with their friendship/love for each other that he didn't even realize he loved stanley as much as he did in a romantic sense along with how much he loved him as a person until he went back to derry and never stopped to think why he was getting excited over stanley giving attention to him or laughing at his jokes but that has always been the case with them.

stanley’s attention or laughter or anything that just came from him was so important to richie no matter when and where, since childhood to adolescence so he never questioned why because it was as simple as breathing to him, as familiar as his buck teeth in the front row of his mouth. hence why the first he remembered after mike called was stanley, the things bowers or others used to say to them, because he never had the underlying guilt that came with the rejection of his feelings, and because his feelings and their bond was so strong. they were best fucking friends, richie probably knew stanley better than he knew himself at that age and vice versa. he didn’t realize the romantic aspect of his feelings because stanley was always just so tangled in his brain that it never occurred to him.
