╰  ★  █║  ⁞    —     ˗ˏˋ        THEY’VE NEVER REALLY KNOWN ANYTHING ELSE other than the brutality of adults; how they were all so eager to hurt others. Adults were akin to nothing more than snakes; tempting those much weaker than them into positions where they could easily be destroyed. That was just the way they were; the sickening way that they ALL acted. This disgusting organization only proved that cruel fact of life more and more every day. It was a wonder they even MET Mari - san. How the heck was she even RELATED to the Boss ? !

                  ‘ Yeah ! That would be nice ! It’d be really weird to meet some NICE grown ups but … it’d be nice ! ‘

                  What a strange concept, really ! Part of them was honestly just a little wary but … if Mari - san thought it was a good idea, then surely it was safe ! Besides, weren’t they in similar positions really ? A position where there was so much injustice in their lives and even ONE kind person was practically ground - breaking ? Maybe they couldn’t trust her MOM right away but they could trust Mari - san ! 

                  ‘ Well, if you’re sure you won’t get in trouble, we can go ! ‘ 

Mari gently patted their head, avoiding their hat as best he could. The poor child. They’ve been let down by almost every adult in their life. She was thankful for all of the good adults in her life. She would be lost without the people who helped shape her into who she was. Maybe she would help them to become someone as well. 

“It’s harder for adults to be good sometimes. Good is a choice that you have to make, and it’s not an easy one. You have to keep making it every single day. For some reason, the older you get the harder it is to keep making that choice. But it is everyone’s responsibility to make that choice.” 

She moved to take their hand, leading them out towards the door. That was enough of that for the day. Today was a day to relax and let go of all of that. All those hard feelings were gonna be let go.

“Let’s go and have a good day, okay? What do you want for lunch while were out?”

This was their HOME. But … home was not without its little CRACKS at the seams; threatening to break at any moment. They’re an innocent little child, but … they’re not STUPID and CLUELESS to the darkness that lingered in those halls.

              It’s a bit of silly question and they’re NOT SURE what they’re trying to accomplish by asking. But it’s nice just hearing Atsushi - niisan’s voice. It was nice to hear what Atsushi - niisan had to say. And they hoped that just talking even just a little would help him. 

“If I could choose? Anywhere?” 

He hadn’t really thought about it before. Why would he? It didn’t feel like he could ever end up anywhere but here. Who does he know outside of this Mafia? And how could he go anywhere without the guidance of Dazai? The one time he had strayed from his orders...

He shook his head, tipping his nose a little bit deeper into his coat.

There were just so many terrible, AWFUL people in their life that they’ve had the misfortune of meeting, it would be HARD to pick just one ! They can’t even think of the last person that was even NICE to them ( well, aside from Mark - san ) ! It’s really just their luck and how their life typically went but … well, maybe there was a BRIGHT side to all this. The more people that hated them and that they hated, the more targets for these pranks there were !

The man paused, screwing up his face as he thought about the last person they mentioned. Potato man? That was probably Steinbeck. He carried around a potato sometimes. And his ability had something to do with... some type of plant. But that was grapes, wasn’t it?

The young woman let out a breath that she didn’t know she had been holding. Was that smile.. genuine? There’s a warm feeling that almost knocked the wind from her lungs in her chest. How long had it been since she actually thought he might be proud of her.

“I-I’m glad that you like it. I just found it while I was out somewhere.” 

It was a lie, of course. She had searched extensively for the book and had to fight to get it. But, she couldn’t tell him that of course.

╰  ★  █║  ⁞    —     ˗ˏˋ         THEY KIND OF HAD AN IDEA OF THE ANSWER; what the true meaning of such a sacred word was. They’d never call the MAFIA home; not at all. Even if it was technically their ‘ home ‘ … it would have been an absolutely TERRIBLE one. People always said they wanted to go home but … no, they never wanted to return to this place; NEVER EVER ! And yet, they always wound up back in this awful place.

                  ‘ Because if the mafia is a home, its a really bad one ! ‘ 

The woman shook her head slightly, crouching down to be on the child’s eye level. She took their tiny hands into her own and gave them a little squeeze. 

“No, darling. The mafia is not a home. Home is...” 

There’s no real way to put it into words. It’s a feeling, and if you never experienced it before. It would be hard to get them to understand. 

“Home is the place where you never feel lonely, even when you’re alone. Where it’s warm even in winter. And where you know that the people that you care about are always going to come back to you, so it’s okay even if they leave for a little while.”

Her….fears?

Now that was a rather strange request. Even stranger were the things she considered her worst fears. They weren’t the same usual things that most people would think of when asked such a thing.

“…losing the people I love. Being able to do something but not making it in time. Ending up completely alone. My fears I think are very common but also very specific. Like we all might be afraid of losing people but also being the REASON for losing someone tends to hurt more. It’s things like that I don’t think I can handle.”

The man tilted his head back and forth slightly. It seemed as if he was carefully considering and pondering this answer. And interesting one, for sure. But not an entirely uncommon one. 

“A fear of losing loved ones. Yes I would say that is one of the most basic fears out there. Though your continuation is interesting. A fear of being the reason for losing someone. A fear of loneliness. A fear of loneliness of your own fault. It sounds almost as though you... expect to be the reason you’re losing them? Either by pushing them away or by dragging them into danger for your own personal reasoning.”

╰  ★  █║  ⁞    —     ˗ˏˋ        SUCH A MORBID TASK WAS DONE FAR TOO MANY TIMES TO THEM; enough that they … kind of had an idea of how to do it ? Of course, most of the time, they were scared out of their MIND but … bandages … couldn’t be TOO hard, right ?

                The blood always stops, that they couldn’t deny. But … they always hated the sight of it. They always hated the sight of that red being FORCED out through awful, awful means. The bandages at least COVERED up the pain. Never did they get rid of the pain entirely but … they HELPED. Maybe the blood liked it too; maybe it liked having something to hold it all in.

                ‘ Yeah … the blood is really smart. It’s smarter than those dumb adults ! But … I don’t know, I think the bandages help kinda. The blood won’t be all over the floor and stuff ! But … I can do it if you want ! ‘

                Carefully do they take the roll back from her with one hand and hold her bleeding arm in the other. The sight was gruesome to say the least. All of those wounds, all of THEIR wounds on her body was something they never wanted to see. But what was done was done and they had to try their best to make up for it. 

                For a moment, they freeze. What if they mess up ? What if they hurt her more ? The very thought terrified them but … now they have no choice. They’ve chosen to do this, to eat those berries even though it disgusted them and now they have to TRY.

                And they begin, very slowly moving that roll and looping it around and around her arm. The wrapping was messy and uneven; definitely the work of a CHILD who had no idea what they were doing but … as long as the boo - boos and ouchies were covered up, it was okay. Right ?

                Eventually, the arm and all of its wounds were COVERED UP in the white wrappings. They look at their work … and then at her … back at the arm … and back at her again. Then, they finally ask.

                ‘ How do you feel ? ‘ 

It’s...she wanted to call it meticulous, but wasn’t sure if that was quite the right word. Clearly they were pouring so much care and effort into the wrapping. Each pass of the bandage, with its firm but gentle press against her, was carefully done. So even with the messy and uneven look to it, she would believe it to be a meticulous endeavor. 

She’s never had someone care about her like this before. That’s what this is, isn’t it? Someone trying to take care of her. It felt... nice. Somehow she didn’t want it to end, watching those hands so carefully hide away all of her blood and bruises. It was a feeling that she would like to get used to, if she can.

If Shelby was being honest, physically she felt the same. The arms still hurt, and the blood was still flowing. But something was warm and spreading through her. And that felt good. So she didn’t think it was a lie when after a long pause she finally replied. 

“It feels better... Thank you. I guess that you must be right. The blood really does like having something to help it stay in. And I guess that it’s less messy this way. My clothes always end up so stained.” 

She’s not used to doing it, so it feels almost clumsy and wrong, but she carefully offered the other child a smile. A rare sight for her, and hopefully a welcomed gift for her friend. She didn’t really have any other way to say thank you.

╰  ★  █║  ⁞    —     ˗ˏˋ         THEY’RE NOT QUITE USED to talking to anyone outside of the Port Mafia, let alone ‘ normal ‘ kids who lived lives so far from the abuse of the mafia. The only children they had ever spoken to were children taken advantage of by adults; whether they were used for experiments or mafia duties. This child would have been their very first experience of talking to someone who never experienced such cruelty … and yet, they didnt’ seem TOO HAPPY.

                  ‘ Well, that’s more candy for you, right ? ‘

                  They could relate in a sense. The mafia didn’t want them out unless it was for a REASON. And even they didn’t trust strangers; for trusting strangers blindly was what lead to their miserable lifestyle now. But there was no one else to go to or nothing they could do. And today was just a holiday, so maybe it was okay … so long as they didn’t get close.

                  ‘ We could still go trick or treating and get MORE candy ! ‘ 

“You do? Uh, thanks.” 

It was a surprise to get a compliment on his costume. Mom had told him a thousand times to pick a more normal costume. Said the other kids would laugh at him. But what did he care? It’s not like they had anything in common anyway. He didn’t really talk to any of the other kids. The bugs were his only real friends around here. 

“I guess that’s true. It doesn’t feel the same though. You guys have trick or treating in Japan? I still haven’t quite figured this place out. It seems really different here.”
