GOD not enough people talk about how Stranger Things is literally all a metaphor for trauma. The abused gay kid is taken by a monster in his own home. The poverty-stricken mentally ill single mother has to confront a monster only she can see. The depressed cop grieving the loss of his child has to find two kids presumed dead. The bullied kid who's desperate to fit ends up unintentionally sacrificing the one person who really cares about her to the monster. AND THAT'S JUST SEASON ONE.

The Shadow Monster is literally mistaken for PTSD by the Lab. It's chasing after Will, following him everywhere, catching him off-guard. Will and Nancy's S2 story is so interesting when you realise they're the same, except Will's is a literal monster and Nancy's is a figurative one. Haunting them, turning them into someone they're not (Will being flayed, Nancy getting blackout drunk at the party). The closer they get to the anniversary date the more the walls being closing in on them. Nancy stabs Will -aka the Mind Flayer- with the fire poker, and is the one to watch the Shadow Monster leave both of them from the cabin door. Only for her it was all symbolic.

Season 3 Billy is the main target, while Will was sneaky and very apologetic while flayed, Billy was aggressive and volatile. The Mind Flayer twists his mind into doing unspeakable things just like his trauma already has for years now. It'd fucked him up so much the only thing he knew how to do by the end of it was let the monster completely take him, and end the suffering of not just himself, but everyone around him.

Season 4 is just... blatant about it. They said fuck metaphors the monster is literally their trauma. Max spent her entire year borderline suicidal and running from the people that care about her. The only thing that saved her were the fact that her people loved her enough to literally reach out and touch her heart.

Nancy's trauma was old, and constantly festering beneath the surface. Vecna took her suddenly, without warning, re-traumatised her and then let her go, because it'll just keep festering for her like it's always done. He blames it all on her, and until she can accept that it wasn't her fault, Vecna will always have a hold on her.

Don't even get me started on Eddie. People say his death was pointless and he should've just run? Yeah, that was the point. He was tormented by the town for no reason, written off from the moment he was born. He was doomed from the start. That's what makes it so tragic. What would've happened had he lived? Really? Let's say, miraculously, he escaped being imprisoned for the rest of his life. The town would still despise him, he would still be hunted by people looking for "justice". It would never escape him. We're talking serial killings here, that's national news. He was destined to have a pointless end. He just chose to sacrifice his life to save his friends from having an equally pointless one. That's why he stopped running. Not for himself, but for everyone like him. His gravestone says "Now At Peace" for a reason. He'd never felt peace in life. His death should make you angry at how pointless it is, it would've never happened if the monsters hadn't been chasing him.

GOD. This show is good. And it's all an analogy!!!!
