Married in Vegas Chapter 1/3 (shigadabi)

“Hey.”

Dabi feels a tug at his sleeve, and turns to find his friend grinning at him.

“I’m going over there,” Tomura announces, his words slurring together a little as he points vaguely off to the right. It takes a few moments for Dabi’s gaze to shift from Tomura to whatever’s over there. The huge room is stuffed full of rich furnishings, the gambling tables made of dark wood and topped with plush green velvet, fancy art and fussy crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, the croupiers all immaculately dressed, the floor carpeted with something soft and miraculously clean. The punters in this casino are, for the most part, better dressed than Dabi and Tomura, but this is Vegas. They have money to throw away, so no one minds that they’re a little scruffier around the edges.

They’re also both drunk. Dabi has spent more time leaning on Tomura than he ought to, and he’s sure he can manage to walk in a vaguely straight line on his own, but he’d rather not try. Tomura, in turn, seems to have lost some rigidity in his body, leaning into Dabi for support. They’re some way off being paralytic, but definitely more than a little buzzed. If there was a blood alcohol scale for such things, it would read that the pair of them are perfect to let loose in establishments where they can lose all their money.

He’s still not sure what Tomura’s plans are, but Dabi nods anyway. “Okay.”

With Tomura leading, they meander between tables and people, and Dabi thinks that the next casino they visit needs to be more downmarket because they’re seriously sticking out amongst the crowd. When they reach Tomura’s goal, Dabi looks at the table, at the wheel with its red and black marked numbers, and supposes that once in everyone’s life they should play roulette in the kind of casino that would feature in a spy movie. Tomura wobbles onto a seat, waiting for the dealer to finish with the last spin’s wins and losses, and Dabi hovers close behind him. He can smell the cheap shampoo Tomura used at god knows what hour of the morning, when they both staggered back to the motel to crash for a few hours, and he looks down at the wavy tangle of near-white hair, longing to run his fingers through it.

Tenko

Here’s something cool I found! In 2007, Kohei Horikoshi, current mangaka of My Hero Academia, had his first published work published in Akamaru Jump. It was a oneshot titled “Tenko”, starring the eponymous boy during war time in feudal Japan. 

If that name sounds familiar, it’s cuz this Tenko shares the same first name as the main villain in My Hero Academia - Shimura Tenko, or better known as Shigaraki Tomura. 

In fact, 2007 Tenko is a sort of proto-type Shigaraki. Tenko isn’t a villain or evil - more like an anti-hero protagonist of the oneshot, but there’s lots of similarity. Besides the name, he shares Shigaraki’s unique power: Decay. In the story, it’s called “Battlefield Vandalism” (戦荒らし); anything he touches with his hands breaks apart.

Both are orphans, having accidentally used their power on a loved one (though implied, in Shigaraki’s case). 

(Possibly what happened to Shigaraki’s father?) 

And both are also driven by a deep hate for the world and a very intense goal to destroy something in it. For Shigaraki, it’s All Might and Heroes, and for Tenko, he wants to destroy all the swords in the world. 

Here’s another familiar scene:

Pretty much the same words, even! “I hate you!”「おまえ…嫌いだ！」

(Man, Horikoshi’s art has improved so, so much over the decade!) 

It’s cool seeing how Horikoshi recycled his character, and kept a few core themes. Even appearance-wise - white hair and only one eye showing - lots of things remain. 

Poor kid though; tragedy’s written into the DNA of the character. I only hope it means Shigaraki’s got a special spot in Horikoshi’s heart and he’s got big things planned for the villain! 

(I have the oneshot! But my Japanese is atrocious, so sorry if I explained anything incorrectly here, but it should all be correct… If anyone wants the story, just send me a message. If anyone wants to translate it, even better!)
