Shit, at this point he would’ve rather been face-to-face with Harley, if only because he had experience with her ilk. Not Flag, though. Only soldiers he’d dealt with were ones that had long abandoned the military life for a cushy job sitting on their ass in the GCPD.

“Got a habit of keeping one eye on folks I don’t trust yet. Don’t take it personally,” or do, perhaps. “Your reputation precedes you, but you strike me as a kindred spirit: reputation means jack shit if you can’t live up to it, right? Guess that’s what I’m waiting for right now.”

He both loved and hated the weight his reputation carried. Half of it was accurate and half of it was concocted by Waller. A smirk twitched the corners of his lips for a moment before his expression settled back into carefully practiced neutrality. He knew Gordon’s reputation as well, and anyone who had been on the streets of Gotham as long as he had and not gotten killed was deserving of Flag’s respect. Hands lifted in a placating gesture before he reached into his pocket for a cigarette. “Oh trust me. I don’t take it personally,” he answered, tone unbothered. “I got orders to do what you ask. You say jump I say how high, all that shit.”

    He’s been around any number of dangerous and violent criminals, yet there is still something about Zsasz that still made his skin crawl. He managed to suppress the shudder that ran through him, gaze lifting to meet Zsasz’s. 

“It’s not...you don’t have to kill for me Victor.”  His voice is calm and steady, though it does unsettle him a little just how willing Zsasz is to kill for him. “Though...thank you. I suppose.”

Flag was very well aware he was going against orders. There was not a ounce of his being that gave a flying fuck. He’d always made a point that no member of his team was left behind, but Harley wasn’t just anyone. They’d been through too much together, seen too much. They were a little bit more than friends. He wasn’t sure what he’d expected to see when he’d found her, but it nearly knocked the breath from his lungs when he saw her. Gun was put back in its holster on his leg, the rest of the world forgotten as he crossed the room to her.  “Harley? Hey it’s me.” His voice is unusually soft, hands clenched to fists at his side as he tried to calm down. “You’re okay. I got you. You’re okay.”

“right, yeah. sure you’d rather hear about my shit instead.” she lets out a soft laugh, looking up at him. “paperwork and administrative issues and the occasional wound to tend. way more exciting.” running her hand through her hair, she realized she hardly had to patch up wounds cause by then it was sometimes too late. “wanna get a drink instead then?”

the barest of smile touches the colonel’s lips, his hand reaching into his pocket to grab his pack of cigarettes. he appreciates her not pushing, not trying to figure out exactly what was going through his mind. if one more person told him to talk out his feelings he was gonna punch someone. he’d talk when he wanted, and right now that was the last thing he needed.

he nodded, hand lifting to bring a cigarette to his lips. “mmm. now that i’m here for,” he murmured as he lit it and took a long drag. “i could use a drink or ten.”
