Job searching is a full time job honestly. And I had to do it while simultaneously taking over a new long term sub position. So I am now employed for next school year and very behind on grading for my current employment.
Plus Mondays’ schedule sucks where I am right now.
And I’m also about to start my period.
Oh, and it’s supposed to rain all week.

Sorry, I have to go back to the Laius bit. I taught Antigone before, which is the last play of the Oedipus Cycle. I always summarized the first two plays before we read Antigone.
Prince Laius’s parents were killed when he was young as others took over the throne. Some loyalists smuggled Laius out of the city so he could grow up and then come back to Thebes and retake the throne. Laius was adopted and raised by King Pelops, who fully 100% treated Laius like one of his own children.
Laius didn’t kidnap and rape “King Pelop’s son”; he kidnapped and raped his adopted brother.
So yeah, the gods fucking cursed him for that. But he did grow up, return to Thebes, retake the throne, and marry a woman named Jacosta. He then visits the Oracle at Delphi, who tells him “if you ever have a son, he will kill you and marry your wife. He’s horrified and swears to never have kids. …but he gets drunk, and Jacosta ends up pregnant… and then they fight over what to do. Jacosta wants to keep the baby and just raise it with knowledge of the curse so it can be avoided. Laius wants to kill the baby so it can’t fulfill the curse. Instead, the baby ends up being raised by the King and Queen of Corinth as if he were their own child.
All of that is discovered towards the end of the first play, Oedipus Rex. The play begins with Oedipus visiting the Oracle at Delphi as he comes of age. The Oracle tells him “if you ever go home, you will kill your father and marry your mother.” Oedipus is absolutely horrified at the thought and swears to NEVER go back to Corinth. Since he can’t go “home”, he decides to head to Thebes….
But anyway, yes, the gods cursed Laius for very good reason, but also it’s kind of a stupid curse because Jacosta and Oedipus suffer the most for Laius’s actions.
i kinda feel bad for oedipus b/c everyone assumes he chose to fuck his mom when in fact he went out of his way to avoid it. he left his hometown and distanced himself from his parents because he was afraid he would somehow get tricked into fucking his mom. everything could have been avoided if his adopted parents told him he was adopted.

Oh _lovely_. Everyone go turn this off:
Enhanced Visual Search in Photos allows you to search for photos using landmarks or points of interest. Your device privately matches places in your photos to a global index Apple maintains on our servers. We apply homomorphic encryption and differential privacy, and use an OHTTP relay that hides [your] IP address. This prevents Apple from learning about the information in your photos. You can turn off Enhanced Visual Search at any time on your iOS or iPadOS device by going to Settings > Apps > Photos. On Mac, open Photos and go to Settings > General.

The thrilling conclusion to the Job Search Saga
I was offered the position at my Second Choice but my First Choice checked references that same day. I stalled for 24 hours but ultimately accepted the Second Choice just in case. That ended up being the right choice bc the next day First Choice rejected me (but did say I was the runner up).
So I have verbally accepted the position and am waiting for the email to come through to formally start the process with HR. I am employed for next year teaching mostly 10th grade (+ 1 section of 9th grade) at a struggling school where motivation is low. Where I’ve been before, that often turns into admin demanding teachers somehow magically “fix” problems that are not actually within our power to do anything about. But this principal seems nice and they weren’t trying to hide the reality during the interview, so maybe here it will be actually a whole-school effort and not so bad?

I was today years old. That is disgusting.
No Child Left Behind is one of the worst things to ever be incentivized in schools. It was signed into law when I was 14. Reading Rainbow was my show as a kid. LeVar Burton played a big part in why I became an avid reader to date. The joy of it. It's an adventure around the globe and through different time periods without stepping on a plane or time machine.
Children parrot behavior. In grade school, I always wanted to read the same amount of books as my teachers (50 books) and managed to double that each year. Before No Child Left Behind, book fairs and Scholastic catalogs were a serious matter like your grandma's Fingerhut catalogs. Libraries were (and still are) a wonderland.
Reading comprehension and proficiency in schools has been declining for decades. A crisis. The joy of books isn't pushed anymore and I'm always saddened by it. It's one of the reasons why I post my book reviews and recommendations on here, as well as posts from others to encourage reading and (novel) writing. Kids will parrot your behavior while the education system sadly fails to return as that example.

I am begging everyone who has ever bemoaned about Hollywood only making sequels and IP movies to go see Sinners in theaters. It has the creative team behind Black Panther working on it and their talent shines through in the cinematography, music, costuming, EVERYTHING. It's a completely original screenplay written by Ryan Coogler and if you want to support original movies, go see it in theaters.

Second Choice School called this morning. I stressed all day about what to do and asked advice from so many people. Unlike other professions, not all schools are willing to give you time to consider. If you ask for it, they might see it as you aren’t interested enough and move on to the next candidate right away. So I want to stall with Second Choice, but if I ask for time to think and they decide to move on, what do I do if First Choice rejects me??
My husband finally suggested asking my references if they’d been contacted by First Choice. I talked to 2 of them and both said they got an email today and had filled out their form. So I finally called Second Choice back after school and they did indeed offer me the job. I said that my husband and I have a policy of not committing until we talk to each other. I promised to talk to him tonight and call again tomorrow.
So now we have to pray super hard that First Choice is really on it and calls tomorrow before school ends if they’re going to offer to me…. 😬
