We actually discussed a little. He asked me what I thought, and I said that humiliation would be the trigger for him, since he's so high on pride. I’m not stupid, I know that the antagonist must be a villain and the protagonist a hero but the same pattern keeps repeating itself and it annoys me.

And before someone makes me say what I didn’t write: no, I don’t need the villain to be seen as a hero and excused for his actions, but if you apply a morality test to him, you might as well apply that same test to the heroes.

Fans of Naruto, FMAB and the Avengers when one of their "Heroes" destroys a country, causes the death of millions of innocents or builds weapons of mass destruction: Baby, he's a lovable kitten. All his mistakes are just the result of his depression.

Fans when a secondary villain causes the death of some innocents and hurts their "heroes" in revenge for what they've done to him: He's pure evil, I hope he dies. Or. Sure, he was broken but... uh... no... how can you defend him when he made Kitten cry? Don’t you see that his trauma doesn’t excuse his actions?

The same fans, two minutes after the villain starts speaking well of the heroes: He had the best redemption arc.

Meanwhile, on the writers' side: take care to associate the villain with an extreme terrorist organization to be sure of invalidating all his arguments (Even if it means demonizing a child for not wanting to live in ignorance with so-called friends with whom he was only in contact for 6 months years ago and only to form a team of child soldiers according to the wishes of those who ruined his life. Even if it means revealing in the film's final minutes that he's named after a character who was originally pure evil and clearly a fu***** Nazi in the comics, whereas his writing in the new material had almost no connection with the old version up to that point).

And I’m serious, just see how the Naruto fandom talks about Itachi (the one who commits genocide) and compare that to the way they talk about the Uchiha in general ( the victims of the genocide). I put two pictures to illustrate this at the end of the paragraph, but be careful, one of the two is very... strange. And clearly, the fans are unable to have any logic in their bullshit: So it’s “funny and pathetic” that the Uchiha were slaughtered overnight by a 13-year-old boy ( dudebros like to leave aside that Obito helped). But it is not apparently understandable that if the Uchiha were so easily wiped out, it is because they did not pose a threat in the first place? That there was no need to kill them. No one else but Itachi had the Mangekyou, the fillers made it look like Fugaku had it because they have a nasty habit of adding Mangekyou throughout the story. And why the hell do the fans hate these three random Uchiha interrogating Itachi? Itachi literally ticks all the boxes of the ideal suspect and the three Uchiha only interrogated him and even allowed themself to be hit without replying. Itachi is always the one who uses physical violence first, whether with Sasuke or the others, but he is always seen as “polite, gentle and calm”. And I did not address the fanfictions that make him the victim of a rape by Fugaku and Sasuke. And while I’m at it, the Akatsuki has made fewer victims than the heroes. And yes, you can count, your favorite characters have killed more people. So the fans cries for “poor traumatized Kakashi” for having to join the Anbu but they closes their eyes on what Kakashi has certainly done in the said Anbu ( There is a reason why he is known and feared in the shinobi world, a world of killers, it’s not my fault if you refused to see this ). The Akatsuki also did not trigger the first shinobis wars ( you know, those wars that killed billions when Hashirama, Tobirama and Hiruzen were in power and Tsunade, Jiraya, Orochimaru and Minato were active participants).

Scar was absolutely in his right to attack Ed, it was the logical thing to do. And I say that when I don’t hate Ed. Scar does not know that Ed is not the type to obey orders, for all he knows, Ed could be called overnight to commit another genocide. The fact that Ed is a child does not prevent him from being a possible threat since he has clearly shown that he is capable of fighting with alchemy. And don’t get me started on Roy. Roy was my favorite character when I was 10 years old but I would never have allowed myself to write fanfictions in which he is the one who is presented as the real victim of the Ishval massacre (and yes, such fanfictions exist). The guy certainly killed as many people as Kimblee and that’s it? No consequence in the end, it is even implied that he will recover his sight if he helps to rebuild the country he himself helped to destroy. I will be Scar I will never allow him to approach the country and I would not care that he tries to repair his conscience after cost, it is too late to play the good guy. Literally any other member of the government could have been sent to rebuild the country but no, let the mass killer go back so he can give traumatic flashbacks to those who survived their first encounter with him.

And seriously, what the MCU has done in Civil War is insane. I don’t usually care about Marvel movies but I was always forced to come the few times when my family wanted to go see a movie. I already knew I was going to hate the movie (since I hated the end of Avengers 2 and the characters) but at least the introduction of T'Challa gave me a character to worry about. Also, I had understood from the beginning that the secret antagonist was from Sokovia (it must be said that it was not very subtle since the country was mentioned every two seconds) so I was relieved that the “Heroes” may not be so morally “irreproachable” as in previous films (they were clearly not before but this time the script will admit it).

So, they write a story in which the Avengers are finally confronted with their mistakes with an enemy who everything pointed to being linked to Sokovia ( the country they literally destroyed without having to suffer the consequences until then). Guess how they manage to demonize the character who literally lost his entire country.

And then in the last 10 minutes: by the way, the name of the villain is Zemo, yes, the Nazi. 😑

(It must be a joke. Are they really unable to create any antagonist for Captain America who is not a Nazi? I guess not. )

Did this character even need a name? No, they could even call him Nemo, Candy or John Doe ( it would have been cliché and too inspired by SEVEN but would really make him the personification of all collateral damage of the Avengers, a man ready to commit the irreparable since the justice has held no one responsible for the destruction of his country and the loss of his family, a man alone against the Avengers, a group of American superheroes protected from the consequences of their actions ). Nothing required the MCU to give names of pre-existing villains in the comics to the antagonists of their films. And they didn’t need to keep him alive either if it was just to destroy his character in the series that follows, at this point, let the character kill himself as he wished and allow him to see his family again.

I love queer subtext as much as the next guy and I recognize that genuine queer subtext written by queer people is a time honored tradition, and I have nothing but love for all the queer artists and writers who over the years fought tooth and nail to get anything even a little fruity in shows and comics: ie Rebecca sugar with adventure time or Lucas Gabreel in high school musical.

It really hurts when a great character is introduced, you're attached to it, and then you can see that the writers don't care anymore, have little respect for the traits and complexities they built before, and the progression becomes something you didn't fall in love to begin with. The character is ... out of character. The lore that was set up before is not taken seriously. It's even more hurtful and mind-fucking when the fandom literally eats up anything they're given... they will just run with anything.

This has happened to me so many times, it never fails to make me go into depression-mode because of how much I devote myself to characters for escapism and it sucks that fanfiction won't solve my rage at the disrespect of a well introduced character who declines in accuracy, consistency and story arc etc.

All of my favourite characters of all time are botched. It's a weird, depressing pattern. Because then I have to move on and I feel empty again.

It is a popular argument on twitter now, that casting a white person for Doom (and Scarlet Witch for that matter) was a good thing, due to how stereotypical he is. "It's important for people who were murdered in Holocaust to be represented by an evil wizard". "The idea of an evil East European dictator being Romani was racist from the start. Well, first off I’m not Romani. All I can do is answer the question as a comics-focused Doctor Doom fan and what I have observed as a viewer and yes, fan of past MCU movies.

Those are all straw-man and wasteful arguments and I honestly try to avoid that on Twitter. Doom is not just an “evil wizard”, know anything about his comics origins and being Romani is inextricable from how he ended up leading a revolution and taking the throne of Latveria. He’s only grown more complex since then, why should a white-washed live action rendition reap (or more likely flatten) the rewards and complexity?

What I personally think is the MCU has a past history of doing well by characters of color that were originally written poorly and with racist tropes such as: M’Baku, Namor, and Xu Wenwu. In the Black Panther movies, Ryan Coogler, his staff, and Winston Duke were able rework M’Baku’s frankly racist comics origins as a Black man in a white gorilla suit to a leader of a religious minority who is a warrior and vegetarian. With the Black Panther sequel, Coogler was able to cast Tenoch Huerta and draw on Namor being mixed-indigenous coded in the comics and make really powerful live-action text with a Mesoamerican-inspired Talokan instead of Atlantis. Xu Wenwu was created for the Shang-Chi movie and he is Shang-Chi’s dad instead of literally Fu Manchu the Yellow Peril caricature. Tony Leung has also been popular and working in East Asian cinema since ever and is charismatic in the MCU role. These are all examples of what Marvel Studios is perfectly capable of: appropriate actors in front of the camera and appropriate writers behind the scenes when the character is based on a real-world marginalized ethnicity.

Why is Doom (and Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver, and pretty much any main or even supporting Romani character) the only one not getting that fair treatment? Where are the co-writers and Romani cultural consultants that Marvel Studios vast resources are capable of reaching out to?

The short of is I think those arguments are disingenuous. Speaking on behalf of a “normal Romani person” to shut down valid criticism is also weird. So many Romani people had an opinion on how Eggers depicted and hired actual Romani actors for Nosferatu (2024), of course people will care about Victor von Doom, the Dr. Doom, the most iconic Romani character in comics.

Okay, so to start at the beginning: We were talking about the MCU Blade and how it was basically assured Mahershala Ali would kill it in the roll. My thought was/is that the casting a bit too obvious and it would have been [ONLY IN MY OPINION] better if the went with a more unknown actor, rather than one such a ‘safe move’. Literally everyone knows Ali will be a great Blade because that man can ACT LIKE A GOD. Then I say that “Hell, he could play Cruella De Vil and be flawless” not only because its true but because that was the most out-there character I could think of at the time.

Captain America: Brave New World Re-Do

I likely have similar criticisms as some in regards to what little I've heard/read about this movie, mainly being the villains in it being Hulk villains, and, for me personally, a lacking definition as to what Sam's weight within the Captain America mantle is. For that, here are the ideas I thank God for that He, if He wills, blessed me with:

Arnim Zola is a main villain in this. He is an agent of chaos, wants anarchy, hates governments, only having worked with HYDRA for his own survival. In reality he's an anarchist, wanting the country to be torn apart at the seams by their own division.

Zola's using a brainwashed ex soldier named William Burnside, whose underwent facial reconstructive surgery to look like Steve Rogers, inserting him into the public as a fake Steve to run for president under the campaign of ensuring public safety through reinforcing the sokovia accords, under the guise of remorse for not supporting it leading to Thanos. Because no one really knows what happened to Steve Rogers and many even disbelieve the time travel idea, a Captain America presenting himself as in the running is a strong motivator for many to support him.

William was used as a Captain America proxy during the cold war, having been experimented on with some variation of the super soldier serum, which drove him insane, thinking he was the real Steve Rogers.

The accords have become a point of intense contention in recent times as reports of abuse of power, needless brutality cause a ruckus amongst the increasingly growing super powered community, one made up of genetically enhanced individuals accidents or otherwise, inhumans and even mutants.

Early on in the movie, Zola activates the HYDRA implemented brainwashing protocol on Isaiah Bradley (who'd been ingrained with this protocol while he was locked up, though it was never activated), to perform an attempted assassination on the fake Steve Rogers as he runs for president. This is hailed by extremists against the sokovia accords as an act of retaliation for the abuse perpetrated by accords agents and as payback for Isaiah Bradley's mistreatment in his past.

Isaiah is arrested and locked up for this assassination attempt, adding fuel to the fire of the anti accords movement, as Isaiah is made into the face of it's actions. The main anti sokovia accords promoting it is extremist sect, a group called the Scourge Of Injustice.

On the opposite end the fake Steve Rogers gains even further political traction in gaining sympathy and favor for his assassination attempt and seeming resilience in the face of it, and accords agents becoming more aggressive in their approaches as a response to this, Isaiah Bradley also being made into a representation of the danger of unchecked powers.

The treatment of Isaiah in this situation also serves to partially radicalize his grandson Eli Bradley, leading him to join the Scourge group.

As situations intensify on both sides, the accords and Scourge both become more radicalized in opposition to eachother. But Eli becomes increasingly uncomfortable with the consequences of their actions and where they're headed, eventually their leader seeking to finish what Isaiah started and kill the fake Steve Rogers.

Themes of this movie are about PTSD and soldiers being discarded by the military when they're done with them, abuses of power, and the folly of the danger of idolization in heroes and figureheads. William was put on ice when he became unstable instead of being given the mental health assistance he could've been given. Isaiah Bradley was locked up in the past in spite of his heroism for the sake of covering up their experiments and trying to replicate it.

When a soldier dies on his watch early on in the movie, Sam struggles with the role of leadership as he's reminded of the loss of his friend that made him retire from the army in the first place, his trauma of that flaring up, his friends death being only a footnote in their raid that got him killed, never formerly being given an acknowledgement due to the mission being off the books. All this is tied to also his own opposition to the sokovia accords. Sam is very much in a place where he's breaking into being his own man as Captain America. Before, he got back into being a soldier because Steve seemed to need his help, he says he does what Steve does just slower, he defers to Steve's leadership in how they respond to the Bucky and accords situation moreso, now he's got to step up by his own perception.

In this we explore some of his past, in how his dad was a minister and was killed when Sam was a teenager. In his anger at this, Sam got into trouble, before joining the military. In the present day, Sam finds himself struggling with the same anger he had as a teen in not just his own failures but also in seeing the injustices done by sokovia accords agents, and how the group the Scourge is using that as a way to encourage destructive behavior. In standing on his own 2 feet, he embraces the Truth of God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit and wears his dad's cross as a maintaining of moral focus in his actions.

Sharon Carter is in this as well, working as a partner of sorts with Sam in this movie, them bonding, but is then revealed to be a sleeper agent under Zola's control, gotten to during the time after the civil war, which, when Sam realizes this, assists him in discovering Zola's location, and uses her memories of her hero her Aunt Peggy to break the mind control on her. Sharon is also Sam's love interest in this movie.

William Burnside is a false image of Steve Rogers, a seemingly pure blank canvas of the surface level idea of Captain America, a white blonde haired blue eyed privileged man with power. He's what those who hold up Cap as perfect see him as and those who hate him see him as. Zola uses the fake Steve Rogers, William Burnside, to tarnish Steve's name and either sow discord against him further or turn people against those who support Steve Rogers. This furthering the divide amongst the people.

Sam is going to discover Zola's plan and, with help from Eli Bradley on the plan of Scourge, with his friend Juaquin Torres having taken on the Falcon mantle and Bucky Barnes, be forced to fight against the Scourge group and Sokovia Accords agents, who have basically been given shoot first orders on all supers who could cause a ruckus. Through his example, Sam is able to rally people, proudly leading as Captain America, to oppose the destructive tactics of both the Scourge leader and the orders given by to Accords agents.

This all concludes with Sam facing off against the fake Steve Rogers, William Burnside, who refuses to accept he's not Steve, them battling against eachother, as Sam seeks to reach William as he fights him, but when that isn't successful, uses the shield to knock him unconscious. Bucky gives a comatose William Burnside over to the wakandans to fix him, as Isaiah is cleared of the charges and is getting help from the wakandans as well, Sharon's brainwashing being less extensive so it requiring less time on it. Eli is encouraged by his granddad to maintain his goals in opposing mistreatment of people but don't let himself be consumed by bitterness and violence like the Scourge leader did, Sam telling him that being a Patriot can mean even fighting for what's best for the country as well as for it.

Sam is still held as a criminal though for fighting against military agents, and goes back into hiding, comfortable with that if it means fighting for what's right. Sharon opts to join him, calling him Captain America and kissing him.

Early on in the movie, Zola activates the HYDRA implemented brainwashing protocol on Isaiah Bradley (who'd been ingrained with this protocol while he was locked up, though it was never activated), to perform an attempted assassination on the fake Steve Rogers as he runs for president. This is hailed by extremists against the sokovia accords as an act of retaliation for the abuse perpetrated by accords agents and as payback for Isaiah Bradley's mistreatment in his past.

Isaiah is arrested and locked up for this assassination attempt, adding fuel to the fire of the anti accords movement, as Isaiah is made into the face of it's actions. The main anti sokovia accords promoting it is extremist sect, a group called the Scourge Of Injustice.

On the opposite end the fake Steve Rogers gains even further political traction in gaining sympathy and favor for his assassination attempt and seeming resilience in the face of it, and accords agents becoming more aggressive in their approaches as a response to this, Isaiah Bradley also being made into a representation of the danger of unchecked powers.

The treatment of Isaiah in this situation also serves to partially radicalize his grandson Eli Bradley, leading him to join the Scourge group.

As situations intensify on both sides, the accords and Scourge both become more radicalized in opposition to eachother. But Eli becomes increasingly uncomfortable with the consequences of their actions and where they're headed, eventually their leader seeking to finish what Isaiah started and kill the fake Steve Rogers.

Themes of this movie are about PTSD and soldiers being discarded by the military when they're done with them, abuses of power, and the folly of the danger of idolization in heroes and figureheads. William was put on ice when he became unstable instead of being given the mental health assistance he could've been given. Isaiah Bradley was locked up in the past in spite of his heroism for the sake of covering up their experiments and trying to replicate it.

When a soldier dies on his watch early on in the movie, Sam struggles with the role of leadership as he's reminded of the loss of his friend that made him retire from the army in the first place, his trauma of that flaring up, his friends death being only a footnote in their raid that got him killed, never formerly being given an acknowledgement due to the mission being off the books. All this is tied to also his own opposition to the sokovia accords. Sam is very much in a place where he's breaking into being his own man as Captain America. Before, he got back into being a soldier because Steve seemed to need his help, he says he does what Steve does just slower, he defers to Steve's leadership in how they respond to the Bucky and accords situation moreso, now he's got to step up by his own perception.

In this we explore some of his past, in how his dad was a minister and was killed when Sam was a teenager. In his anger at this, Sam got into trouble, before joining the military. In the present day, Sam finds himself struggling with the same anger he had as a teen in not just his own failures but also in seeing the injustices done by sokovia accords agents, and how the group the Scourge is using that as a way to encourage destructive behavior. In standing on his own 2 feet, he embraces the Truth of God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit and wears his dad's cross as a maintaining of moral focus in his actions.

Sharon Carter is in this as well, working as a partner of sorts with Sam in this movie, them bonding, but is then revealed to be a sleeper agent under Zola's control, gotten to during the time after the civil war, which, when Sam realizes this, assists him in discovering Zola's location, and uses her memories of her hero her Aunt Peggy to break the mind control on her. Sharon is also Sam's love interest in this movie.

William Burnside is a false image of Steve Rogers, a seemingly pure blank canvas of the surface level idea of Captain America, a white blonde haired blue eyed privileged man with power. He's what those who hold up Cap as perfect see him as and those who hate him see him as. Zola uses the fake Steve Rogers, William Burnside, to tarnish Steve's name and either sow discord against him further or turn people against those who support Steve Rogers. This furthering the divide amongst the people.

Sam is going to discover Zola's plan and, with help from Eli Bradley on the plan of Scourge, with his friend Juaquin Torres having taken on the Falcon mantle and Bucky Barnes, be forced to fight against the Scourge group and Sokovia Accords agents, who have basically been given shoot first orders on all supers who could cause a ruckus. Through his example, Sam is able to rally people, proudly leading as Captain America, to oppose the destructive tactics of both the Scourge leader and the orders given by to Accords agents.

This all concludes with Sam facing off against the fake Steve Rogers, William Burnside, who refuses to accept he's not Steve, them battling against eachother, as Sam seeks to reach William as he fights him, but when that isn't successful, uses the shield to knock him unconscious. Bucky gives a comatose William Burnside over to the wakandans to fix him, as Isaiah is cleared of the charges and is getting help from the wakandans as well, Sharon's brainwashing being less extensive so it requiring less time on it. Eli is encouraged by his granddad to maintain his goals in opposing mistreatment of people but don't let himself be consumed by bitterness and violence like the Scourge leader did, Sam telling him that being a Patriot can mean even fighting for what's best for the country as well as for it.

Sam is still held as a criminal though for fighting against military agents, and goes back into hiding, comfortable with that if it means fighting for what's right. Sharon opts to join him, calling him Captain America and kissing him.

Aight, I think I got a Fear Toxin formula headcanon for the Arkham Shadow version of his drug! I tried to build it after pharmacological principles. But take all the information with a big grain of salt as I'm obv no scientist, and this is nothing but pure speculation for funsies! ^w^ ⬇️

Okay so, first we have the Base Compound: Arecoline (video). It's function: it acts as a muscarinic agonist (meaning it's a cholinesterase inhibitors to decrease the breakdown of acetylcholine - which is an important neurotransmitter that plays a role in brain functions, such as memory, and body functions - and increase that acetylcholine in the synapse)!

At high doses, it can cause overstimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to physical discomfort and mental disturbances (confusion, memory loss, agitation etc, the same stuff his patients reported after having been exposed to his drug).

Furthermore, he could have included a synthetic piperidine derivative to enhance hallucinations by targeting NMDA receptors, which causes dissociative states and vivid, surreal imagery.

Another ingredient could be some kind of modified ergot alkaloid to amplify Arecoline’s mental effects by introducing serotonin receptor (5-HT2A) agonism, which could intensify the hallucinations, perhaps even making them grotesque and terrifying (though that's not a given)

Then there is the option of adding an derivative that prevents the breakdown of Arecoline, enhancing and prolonging its activity!

And the idea of including an inhibitor to prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, ensuring prolonged overstimulation of cholinergic, leading to increased intensity of sensory distortions, anxiety, and panic...

That's about it. I'm pretty sure there are so many other variants that could be based off of Arecolin that would work better though! Not that I'm saying that this one would work, ofc!!
