This pal is the Rosy Boa and it’s the slowest moving snake! This means that it has to wait to ambush prey near it or slowly stalk its prey. It moves at about 1 mph on open ground. Let me know if you guys want a more in depth post about these friends!

Here’s a fun fact for everyone!
Only about 70% of snakes lay eggs. The other 30%, some of which are vipers, boa constrictor, rattlesnakes, water snakes, and death adders, all give a form of live birth.
In the case of rattlesnakes, the eggs are incubated inside the mother’s body. Once the embryos have fully developed, they then hatch and then are born. (how do you word that?? They exit the mother??? They’re released???)

You’re a snake enthusiast, correct? If so, I have a question. What’s the deal with cobras? I was under the (apparently false) impression that they weren’t huge snakes, but I just found out that a king cobra can grow up to 18 feet???? Pardon my French, but what the actual fuck. I am terrified. Please tell me a cool and non threatening fact about king cobras so that I can stop freaking out.
Jsjhfgjhg I can definitely understand the fear those dudes are huge. Hopefully some of these can help!
The pals are deaf to ambient noise so they have to listen to vibrations from the ground instead.
They are the only species of snake that will make nests for their eggs and young.
The hood on their neck that they flare when threatened is actually made up of their ribs, which they push outwards around that area of the neck.
I’m so sorry it took so long for me to respond!

Snakey fact? Pleaseeeeeee
oh hell yeah I gotchu fam
Tumblr media
This little dude is a Barbados Threadsnake (Tetracheilostoma carlae), which is the smallest species of snake known as of now! On average, they grow to be about 4 inches (the largest recorded individual of this species was about 4.09 inches). Because these pals are absolutely teeny they eat mostly termites or ant larvae. I love them so much they’re so small like at first glance it’s just “oh cool a rope/wire/string” but nope! It’s a smol friendo!
Also, if you wanted a fact about just snakes in general have this one: The speed snakes digest their food at depends on how much heat they have access to. On average, it takes a snek about 4-5 days to digest their food. However if in a warmer environment or having access to a stronger heat source, they can digest it in about 2-3 days or even faster.

Could you do a post about Hognose snakes? they’re so freakin cute
Absolutely!! They really are adorable ;-; (Also I'm so so sorry for disappearing there. I’ve got some posts queued up so hopefully it doesn't happen again any time soon)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These funky friends are Eastern Hognose snakes (Heterodon platirhinos)! Hognose snakes are most typically recognized for their upturned snouts, which can be useful for digging by using a sweeping side to side motion. The average adult is usually around 28 inches and the females of this species are larger than the males. While these pals are considered nonvenomous, they have enlarged adrenal glands that secret hormones to counteract poisons on the skin of prey. Speaking of prey, Eastern Hognose snakes have a diet that consists mainly of amphibians, their favorite being toads. At the very back of their jaw they have big teeth that can be used to deflate a toad like popping a balloon for easier consumption. When threatened, they have similar mannerisms to a cobra (flattening of the neck, hissing, and striking) but they never actually try to bite the threat, instead choosing a high speed headbutt. If this method doesn't work, they also may choose to play dead by laying still, emitting a foul odor, and sticking their tongue out. It kind of reminds me of when a dog dramatically tries to play dead but add a bit more of a stench and less legs.

I’m so sorry for the delay guys! These past few weeks have been literal hell so I haven’t had the chance to research different snakes. My midterms are almost here but I’ll do my best to get some snake content out today. Sorry again for the delay! I missed sharing these cool sneks with you all!!
✨ Funky Announcement Time✨
Hey guys! Just a heads up that I’m gonna be absent from this blog for the rest of the week (maybe next week as well but I’ll send out another announcement if that ends up being the case). We have midterms coming up and I’d really prefer not to fail my classes! /j However, I will still be kinda active on my main blog if you want to interact/suggest snakes for the future there so you don’t have to wait for my return. I hope you all have a wonderful week and I will return with more snake facts soon!

False water cobra? Plz?
Thank you so much for requesting this little pal! They were really fun to learn about!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These friends are False Water Cobras (Hydrodynastes gigas). These pals were given their common name because they have the special ability to "flatten" their neck when threatened to appear larger. This is an ability that only cobras typically have. However, our pals here will remain horizontal when threatened instead of rising up like actual cobras. These friends have their fangs located in the back of their mouth, so they have to bite onto their prey in order to actually inject their toxin. They are also semi-aquatic, hence the water part in their name, and they are found in South America. They eat tadpoles, frogs, other aquatic amphibians, reptiles, and some mammals and birds. Another impressive fact about our snake pals is that the average False Water Cobra will grow to around 6 to 7 feet! I had a blast learning about these super cool snake friends and I hope you do as well! I'll probably post more facts about them on this blog as I find them!

I would like to introduce you all to one of my favorite snek pals! This is the Arabian Sand Boa (Eryx jayakari). These friends live in the Arabian Peninsula and Iran where they like to spend all day buried in the sand. They grow to be about 38 cm and they are mostly nocturnal. They will emerge from under the sand with only their eyes exposed around dusk where they prepare to pounce on any small creature that passes it. They eat mainly geckos and worm lizards. Be sure to show this little pal some love. How can you resist those eyes?

So sorry for disappearing for a hot second! Anyways let’s get back to learning more about our favorite sneks!
Tumblr media
This friendo is a Common Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis). These guys can be found all around North America and grow to be about 22 inches. They also happen to be the state reptile for Massachusetts! While their venom is toxic to smaller creatures, it’s pretty much harmless to humans. That being said, these guys can also be known as “garden snakes” because they love to give your yard free pest control! These pals eat amphibians, rodents, small fish, and earthworms.

Starting off the blog with a nice classic pal! This friend here is a Greater Green Snake (Ptyas major). Reptipedia describes them as “mild-mannered” as they tend not to bite. They grow to be around 75-90cm. They eat earthworms and other similar soft-bodied invertebrates. Be sure to send some appreciation toward this funky friendo!
