Visual language - Evaluation
Overall I am really happy with how this project turned out. I feel that I pushed myself to my limit during the design process, teaching myself to be brave with my design decisions in order to get the best outcomes possible. I felt during this process that I really struggled to design and create my own imagery and backtracked a lot during my idea making process however, with the advice and feedback from peers, lecturers and other designers, I managed to create a range of outcomes which work really well as a set. Although I created a wide range of elements for this brief, I made sure that each design was thoroughly thought about and carefully executed to fit with my concept. I feel that the ticket and 3D interactive installation pieces were the most successful elements that I created during this project. This is because they clearly imply and visually communicate the theme of the Impact Festival, being eco - friendly, due to the natural imagery, textures and elements such as the seed paper in the ticket and the colour scheme and leaf logo shape of the 3D installations. I feel that the second installation really helped to show the ‘make a pact’ side to my festival, keeping my younger target audience intrigued whilst encouraging them to make a pledge to help the environment whilst at the event.
Although I originally really struggled with idea making for this project, I feel I came up with some really unique ideas which have never been seen before, whilst trying out new techniques inspired by different agency’s and artists. I learnt some new skills during my experimentation and development process such as gold foiling, 3D design and illustration which is a skill I have always struggled with. Although I tried out a lot of different experiments which I did not end up using in my final designs, I feel that they were overall a really integral part to my development and overall helped me come up with some effective designs such as the plant shadow experiments.
I found that I really pushed myself during this project in terms of primary research. My brief really allowed me to branch out in lots of different ways to conduct research. I was able to not only interview creative directors of festivals, brand marketeers and conduct surveys but was also able to physically visit a festival where I could take photos and confirm the research into waste and litter that I had done earlier on in the project. I found creating products which were 100% eco-friendly and sustainable more difficult than I had originally anticipated however by researching into different papers, materials and concepts, I was able to overall provide and design for an eco friendly festival whilst sticking to and taking into account my younger 16-27 year old target audience.

Visual language - Social media assets
At this stage I created a final checklist to help gather my thoughts and plan ahead
Tumblr media
Bournemouth 7s photos:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whilst at Bournemouth 7s festival, I collected some photos of the event to use in mock-ups or social media assets.
Tumblr media
For my social media assets i took inspiration from ISTD worldwide Instagram as i love the way they include their logo enlarged and in a carousel format to entice the audience to want to scroll to the next slide to read what the whole logo says.
This was my try of this technique:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried using some of my photos that I took at Bournemouth 7s in the background to help highlight the artists names.
I decided to narrow the artists names down to just British artists as singers travel from around the world hold a large negative impact on the environments pollution levels.
Tumblr media
I settled on the more colourful imagery from Bmth7s as this draws attention and frames the artists names well. It is also a photo of an outdoors stage in the middle of a forest (Funky Forest) which gives a more eco-friendly look and aesthetic.

Visual language - Banner development
For the banner designs, I wanted to design them so one banner shows the negative side effect of not having eco-friendly festivals / statistics, and the other banner showing what the Impact festival does to counteract these problems. This shocks the audience into realising how bad the statistics are, making them want to make a pact to help.
Banner 1:
Tumblr media
This is the positive banner development. I made sure to make it more colourful and bright than the negative banner to give a clear comparison.
Banner 2:
Tumblr media
I made sure to give the negative poster more dull colours whilst still being interesting to look at to not make the audience lose interest .
I included statistics that I found during my research into the Reading festival case study and other waste data that I found at the start of this project.
Final banner design mockups
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These banners would be down around the festival at The Eden Project.

Visual language - Wristband development
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my design I started with just my logo in bold, this on it’s own is effective however I added in a few of my leaves and shadow images to link it with the rest of my designs and mock-ups.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also designed the bamboo slider in the shape of the left logo to make it more unique. I also made sure to add the recycle icon to make people aware that the wristband is eco-friendly.

Visual language - Wristband research
Tumblr media
To start my wristband design process I looked into different materials that I could the design the wristband to be made out of. I found that the most eco-friendly and sustainable option was the recycled fabric wristband with a bamboo slider.
Tumblr media
I took photos of wristbands I have collected from past festivals for more inspiration for designs. I noticed that they all include very bold text and not much information, just the name of the festival and sometimes the year.

Visual language - Talks
On my secondary poster I have explained that i wanted to change the singers and artists to environmental talks by people that Gen Z look up to. Here are my findings about people i thought would be good to include.
JADAN SMITH:
The US rapper and actor has launched a number of his own sustainable projects and is an advocate for electrical vehicles.
Jaden Smith said he hopes to collaborate with Greta Thunberg because he is inspired by her “passion” and “fearlessness” when campaigning for environmental issues.
The US rapper and actor, 25, performed before the Swedish environmental activist spoke at a global climate strike march in New York City in 2019.
Smith, who has launched a number of his own sustainable projects and is an advocate for electric vehicles, said he would “100%” like to be involved in a similar project with Thunberg.
Jaden explained that: “Just (her) passion, education, fearlessness, standing up to adults and speaking the truth better than them.”
AL GORE:
Former Vice President Al Gore expressed optimism that humanity can still repair the damage to the environment that is causing global warming.
In an era when mounting disasters made worse by the warming climate raise fears for the Earth’s future, Al Gore could simply say “I told you so.”
“I guess I could have done more, wish I had done more I guess,” Gore told USA TODAY in an exclusive interview last week.
ANDY GOLDSWORTHY:
Artist Andy Goldsworthy Emphasizes the Power of Connectivity Between Humans and the Natural Space within his work
Andy Goldsworthy, strives to represent the intimate relationship that exists between humanity and nature, and to remind his audience of the connection they have to the natural environment.
“We often forget that WE ARE NATURE. Nature is not something separate from us. So when we say that we have lost our connection to nature, we’ve lost our connection to ourselves.”
Goldsworthy’s artistic process requires that he first attune to the environment he is working within. He observes, listens and feels the natural space surrounding him and finds ways to express and emphasize the natural beauty that the materials possess. Through this exploration of natural space, Goldworthy is able to experience and provide a deeper understanding of the connection between the Earth and human existence.

Visual language - Final poster development
main poster:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here I started changing some of the imagery to make it link more to the eco-friendly brief. I included more paper textures to link to recyclability and added in more shadows and plants around the boarder to frame the information and link to the idea of light being generated from kinetic dance floors and solar stages. I added in a 3d paper earth to enhance the eco-friendly component.
secondary poster:
Tumblr media
For the secondary poster I followed a very similar composition with the same shadow and plant imagery and textures but added information about what makes the Impact Festival a green event around the earth imagery. After conducting some research about different famous people who talk about the environment I replaced the artists with these names and will add the artists back in on the social media assets I will design later on.

FINAL POSTER MOCKUPS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These digital posters would be posted around The Eden Project and Cornwall universities to help promote the festival to the younger age group such as students and to people that visit The Eden Project who likely have an interest in the environment.

Visual language - Poster development using feedback 2
main poster development:
Tumblr media
This is a design which I felt was really successful. I believe it works really well for a festival brand however after getting feedback I realised that it did not showcase the eco-friendly element of my brief unless I explained the different components . I would like to visually communicate this aspect of it more.
Tumblr media
secondary poster development:
This was the secondary poster with the same imagery and layout. I am also not happy with how I am promoting the artists as it takes away focus from the ‘What makes us green?’ Information as the younger audience will be more interested in who is playing at the festival.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Therefore, from here I will be highlighting the Green information more and also having names of famous people that have done talks about the environment who Gen Z are interested in. This will draw more attention to the eco-friendly aspect. I would however like to still include the music artists as the younger generation will be interested in music at the Impact Festival. Instead, I will mention these names in social media post assets so the poster shows the more important information.

Visual language - artist research
Nice and serious:
Tumblr media
National Landscapes Association:
Nice and serious worked with the National Landscapes Association to unite the network of Areas of Outstanding Natural beauty under a new, shared brand identity – built around the idea of them being a living patchwork of the nation.
https://niceandserious.com/work/national-landscapes-association-rebrand
The new brand invited all people to find their own connection with the special landscapes and help to climate change and biodiversity loss.
Tumblr media
I felt really inspired by this work as i loved the simplicity of the imagery and also the minimalistic shadows of leaves and plants that they use to bring their designs together.
Poster development using feedback 1:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At this point my image making experiments started coming together through the use of testing different compositions and fonts however I got in touch with my dad who is a graphic designer to give me some feedback on some designs I tried to the left. This really helped me to simplify my designs and take out components which I did not need.

Visual language - Hit an art block :(
Poster idea 3 development
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried combining my different image making experiments together, as I did for the ticket design, however again, this mixed up too many different styles of imagery and created a really chaotic and confusing look. I would however like to use the image make I did using the positive / negative spaced shapes of my Kew Garden plant photos I took shown above.
Fresh idea mood board
Tumblr media
At this stage, I was really struggling to bring all of my ideas together to form a poster so I did a mind dump on a few mind-maps and mood-boards to help me figure out some more simplistic layout designs.
Tumblr media
To help me organise my thoughts and figure out what i still needed to get done, i created a check list on my notes app to help me.
Tumblr media
I also wrote down all of the artists & designers, experiments, and primary research i had already conducted so i could see what ones could help me during this poster making process and what else i could do / conduct to help me.
MIRO BOARD:
Throughout this project i had also been conducting a miro board to gather all of my primary research findings from trips, photos, interviews and surveys to help gather my thoughts and findings

Visual language - poster idea 1 development
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As with the ticket design, I tested out similar shapes and the lino prints and illustrations on the poster to start with. Again, this design did not suit my target audience and I wanted to stick to a more green, eco-friendly looking colour scheme.
POSTER IDEA 2 DEVELOPEMENT
after 1:1 tutorial:
After having a 1:1 tutorial to help me with image making, I was advised to see what the poster with just an enlarged version of the plant shadows looked like.
Although I loved these outcomes and feel that they are beautiful and simplistic, it did not suit my project brief of festivals and after getting feedback off of multiple lecturers and peers, I was told that it looked more like a garden centre advertisement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would like a balance of festival imagery and layout mixed with eco-friendly, Eden Project style imagery to suit my project intentions more.

Visual language - Poster primary research
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before starting the design for my poster I went on a trip to London with our course. As we went around I took photos of the digital posters and billboards that I saw on the Underground and also found a few where I live in Bournemouth which were perfect as they were festival posters. I plan on making my poster digital as this reduces the amount of waste on the streets ( I was reminded this during my research project from a survey I carried out in unit 2)

Visual language - Gold foiling experiment
Here I tested out gold foiling which is a new practice that I have never done before. I made sure to use recyclable gold foil for this process so that the whole ticket was 100% sustainable and eco-friendly. I gold foiled the recycling icon and parts of the flowers on the front of the ticket to help draw attention to the Impact Fest logo underneath it and to make the ticket look more aesthetically pleasing overall. I gold foil, I simply printed out my imagery fully black onto plain paper and layered the gold foil over top, using a laminator to stick it to the imagery.
Tumblr media
Here, I measured out the width of my ticket packaging to determine the size of the seed paper. I decided to make these the shape of my leaf logo in order to help it link better to my ticket and brand design.
