Today’s Happenings
I was just about to step inside the casino’s basement lift to report for today’s shift, I heard a car screeching to a halt at the parking area very close to the lift. Three very loud mouthed passengers, who were obviously drunk, alighted and demanded the lift to wait for them. Before anyone inside could react, the lift door closed. It was too late. I had an intuition that tonight is going to be testing time for me.
My shift began with the routine formalities behind me, I stepped inside the casino to see an unusually quiet and peaceful atmosphere. The usual hustle and buzz was somehow missing.
Not very long, the three loud mouthed gentlemen arrived & ordered straight away for booze. After having emptied their glasses, they headed for different tables. I already smelled trouble, now had to be extra vigilant at three different tables where any one of these gentlemen could spell disaster. I didn’t have to wait long when I heard loud shouts and screams from one of the tables of Black Jack. The poor dealer was trying his level best to explain that he had lost the game!
It was after an hour of gruel, I managed to bring the situation under control. The dealer was so shaken up that he refused to reopen the table for another hour or so. I realized that my intuition was correct after all.
My perversion for alcohol grew by many folds after this incident. I am still unable to figure out - was it alcohol or the Black Jack which got the better of him?

A large gathering around a particular table caught my attention. The excitement among the participants was obvious, but it had grabbed the attention of the bystander and passersby as well. People from far flung corners converged to this table to inquire what was going on. I could feel the vibrations from this far. Naturally I was curious. It appeared to me that some live rock show is about to start. I wasn’t quite far in my guess; I heard the whispers grow into loud cheers. By this time I was almost at the roulette table and quickly learned that the stakes had breached the million marks!
Amidst all this, were some gorgeous ladies clutching on to their drinks, purses or whatever they could lay their hands on. The nervous excitement was growing louder by the passage of each second. People started to gulp their drinks. With each sip, the cheers were getting louder & louder. There was also an buffet of all kinds of pastry. The ball was cruising against the wall real fast. Briefly forgetting my duty, I too succumbed and joined the crowd who by now were cheering in unison. Anticipation of a mega night about to unfold was very real! The crowd began to become quieter as the ball slowed down. Still moving in circles, it was on the edge of the rim.
And so were we!
After some agonizing moments wait, the ball bounced from one number to another. By now everyone was so silent we can hear their breath. Stakeholders were praying hard. Finally, the ball stopped on 8! Ear deafening cheers followed! We had just witnessed a 10 million winning event!

It’s hard being a cop
As if being a cop is not difficult enough, my duty register recorded my duty at a casino till further instructions.
This wasn’t the first time. The casino is the place where decent hard working people turn crazy in the hope that they would make good money - all in one night, and can then not worry about impending luxury.
The fact remains, they lose most of the times. Rarely have I seen winners walk out.

How gamblers are born
I recollect my early encounter one night; I was generally patrolling the area when I spotted a decent looking gentleman having a go at the slot machine with all his might. He appeared to uproot it out of its place! He was kicking it and no matter how hard he tried to punch it open, it won’t budge. With every unsuccessful attempt he made, he seems to grow wilder.
I immediately intervened and took the man into preventive custody for trying to damage property. The next few moments passed trying to pacify the gentleman. It was good half an hour before he could control his emotions.
Turned out that the gentleman heading a decently growing business had returned the fifth time to win back his dollars lost earlier. Novice that he was, he tried the simplest game he could follow.
After regularly losing hundreds of dollars, he was frustrated to the point he had completely lost it & was having a go at the poor lifeless machine! This incident made me realize how gamblers are born.

Realization
During my tenor here, I have realized that there isn’t any point being philosophical. Let them enjoy the way they want to! Happy gambling!

Gambling in a philosophical sense.
Sometimes I feel hopeless and incapable of preventing people from getting sucked up into this black hole. No matter how hard I want to, but the conflict catches up. My job is to maintain law & order; peace & tranquility. Most of my time is spent in observing people and so get to know the “before and after” side effects. In all these years, I have mastered the art of spotting trouble when it is brewing.
Before it can turn into a free-for-all, I have succeeded in defusing the situation however potentially volatile. Here I have seen people gambling away their fortunes and playing like there’s no tomorrow. Isn’t it common knowledge that very rarely people win? Out of thousands who lost their wealth, probably only one wins.
But I think it’s the lure of becoming that ONE winner that draws people to gambling. Or is it the uncertainty or faith of individuals in chance? Whatever it is, there is certainly no escape from the satanic clutches.

It is possible to hold two competing ideas in your head at the same time — like criticizing the police for racial bias, and also respecting the good work that they do. Here’s how this works:
Tumblr media
As every true American knows, Panera has the “you pick two” lunch combo, which lets you choose both a soup and a sandwich. At any other restaurant, the concept would be laughable, but…

On one hand…

But you can also think police brutality is wrong.

Wait, Larry: was this whole segment a ploy to get Panera to send you free bread bowls?

The other side
I have seen the grandeur of the casino and the awe surrounding it, it seems to draw common sense out of people like iron is attracted towards a magnet. The lure of money, that too hard cash, tempts even the most righteous ones into becoming insane gamblers. Coupled with some booze, it’s irresistible. I mean, Movies have glamorized it to no end. Thankfully I am able to resist my feelings since I am on the other side!
