And we’re back after an art block! I really really enjoyed doing the character acting for this dialogue. It’s such a tender moment in the original writing, and I hope I was able to capture the spirit of it here. The flashbacks are from an earlier part of the fic, where the two of them go through L’s old art!

Tyler spits out blood and his lips sore from the previous blow.

"Did you decide to hurt me physically at ? Would you like to take and shake my soul out? Do you want to break me completely? Not?"

"Get away! I'll shoot, damn you, Rake, I'll shoot!"

Tyler drops his pistol, throwing his arms out to the side and looking at Jonathan like, come on, pull the trigger, do it, come on.

"And what will change? I'm dead, Jonathan"

Tyler sneers, and Pine sees tears flow down his bloody face, feeling his own, which burn into the skin, dig in and tear, how he squeezes his throat with an iron grip, how he wants to scream, sinking to his knees, pulling out clumps of hair.

i can’t understand why we don’t talk about the concept where hannibal puts a rich but elegant ring in front of the will and says so quietly ‘will you be my partner not only in crime?’

The Killing of Candace Newmaker

The killing

When parents start to observe alarming behavior in their children, they might think that therapy is the best solution. It can be in some cases, but it might not work at all in other cases. However, no parent would suspect that the therapy sessions could be deadly. That is what happened to a ten-year-old Candace Newmaker.

Candace showed signs of suffering from reactive attachment disorder (RAD), which is a rare disorder. Some of the symptoms of RAD is that the child seeks attention and comfort from adults nearby, even if the child does not know the adult. Other symptoms include apathy and causing harm to oneself or others. Candace’s birth-parents were neglectful, which resulted in Candace and her sibling being removed from the home. At the age of 7, Candace was adopted by a woman named Jeane Elizabeth Newmaker.

It did not take long before Jeane took Candace to see a psychiatrist. Jeane had become worried about Candace’s state of mind since she had killed several goldfishes and sometimes played with a machete. In April 2000, when Candace was ten years old, Jeane decided to take her to a two-week session of attachment therapy. Connell Watkins, who did not have a license, was assigned to have the therapy sessions with Candace. During the second week, Watkins decided to have a “rebirthing” session with Candace. The so-called rebirthing was supposed to mimic a child being born. Candace was wrapped in a sheet and was covered with pillows, and Watkins instructed her to get out of the sheets as if she was being born. However, Watkins was not the only one in the room with Candace. His colleague Julie Ponder was also in the room, as well as Jeane and two other people serving as Candace’s “therapeutic foster parents”. The main purpose of the rebirthing process was that it could, according to Watkins, make Candace more likely to connect with Jeane. Four of the adults in the room pushed Candace down while she tried to fight her way out. They put around 673 pounds (around 305 kg) of pressure on Candace but did not stop even when Candace cried and screamed for them to stop. Candace even screamed that she was going to die, to which Watkins responded the following: “Go ahead. Die right now, for real. For real”. After twenty minutes, Candace had vomited and defecated, but the adults ignored the obvious signs of her dying. Watkins asked the dying girl if she wanted to be reborn, and Candace managed to answer “no”. This was her last word. Julie Ponder mocked the girl by calling her a quitter, and Jeane and the two other adults in the room were asked to leave. Five minutes later, Watkins nad Ponder unwrapped Candace, who had now become motionless and blue on her hand and lips. Jeane returned to the room and started doing CPR and Candace, but to no avail. Watkins called for an ambulance and Candace was taken to a hospital, where she was declared brain-dead the following day.

Trial and aftermath

There was extensive proof against Watkins and Ponder; one of the most important pieces of proof was the fact that all of their session with Candace had been videotaped, even the one where she was killed. These videos were shown at their trials, and they were both found guilty of reckless child abuse resulting in death and sentenced to 16-years in prison. The therapeuitc foster parents pleaded guilty to criminally negligent child abuse and were given ten years’ probation as well as 1000 hours of community service. Their punishment were part of a plea bargain. Jeane, Candace’s adoptive mother, pleaded guilty to neglect and abuse charges and was given a four-year suspended sentence. 

Watkins was released from prison in 2008, after serving seven years in prison.
