it's fascinating how strangers from hell is the most truly horrifying thing i've ever seen. i wasn't at all Scared until the last episode and that was mainly i started feeling vulnerable as a viewer because the violence escalated out of nowhere so it felt like there were no limits left on what i was about to be shown (and then i found out the last episode ONLY is 19+), but it wasn't because the themes were different from the other preceding 9 episodes. like the show isn't even SCARY it's gutwrenching. and yet it's somehow a pleasure to watch until that last episode???
i think what makes it so horrific is the way it shows jongwoo having to endure stuff similar to the sort of harassment women face (NEVER seen a male lead get this shit it's fascinating). not only do you get the dread and humiliation brought on by the harassment itself, but you also get the consequences of what would happen if jongwoo reacted to the harassment because there are constant revenge fantasies that are shot identically to the rest of the show and you can only discover that it didn't happen when it eventually shows the antagonist unbloodied. so watching him (at least for me) you're panicking thinking no no you can't defend yourself bro they're going to recriminate you're so fucking over and then it reveals that was just in his mind. so it's this experience of grinding humiliation interrupted with revenge fantasies that might not be fantasies at all and if a SINGLE one of these scenes doesn't end with jongwoo taking a deep breath and saying something polite, that means his career is Over. and later, his life
#as i said before:#& the horror is only intensified by the moments of tenderness.. jongwoo and jieun walking around town giggling is just what COULD have been#and then the relationship with seokyoon is one last reminder of jongwoo when he ISNT stressed and miserable#AND THEN MOONJO is gently sensually tender but just so so awful. i like how the show Let it be awful. when he places his hand on jongwoos#throat & says don't lie to me again it could have been played as a hot fun moment and its undoubtedly sensual but when the shot switches#jongwoo is crying. what is fun about getting stalked by your neighbor? and so the show lets it be not fun. it IS horrible
