Plaid Floor and More
Plaid Floor and More
I’m beat. Just got back to our friend’s house after an evening of installing Marmoleum, which is the flooring we picked.
Half of the kitchen is covered. Thank you Mark and Brent!
The walls and ceiling are textured and painted. We extended a wall and narrowed a door. Tomorrow, we’ll get the flooring finished and some cabinets hung.
This door was four inches wider.
 Texturized and primed.

Drywall Is Up
Please Lord, give me the strength to endure subpar subcontractors. The plumbing is finished and our schedule was blown apart by plumbers who didn’t show up and never called to say they weren’t going to show up. Also, they failed to make the drain stay above the ceiling, so we had to build a box around it. I need to remind myself that we no longer have a pipe running down the wall, which would…

Plumbing is still not done
Plumbing is still not done
Most of the plumbing is complete. However, leaky pipes in a doctor’s office took precedent and the plumbers left after lunch. It’s kind of like being in the emergency room and watching worse cases being treated before you. Hopefully, Monday they will finish the job. In the meantime, we have no water at the house and I’m stressed about all of the delays.

Pipe is in the wall The plumbing situation has been frustrating, but work is happening and we no longer have a four inch drain running down the kitchen wall.

Total Kitchen Demolition
We have an unusable, dirty room! I mean our kitchen is demolished and we’ve gotten some new drywall up and electric sorted out.
  Progress is no sink.
We’re still waiting on the plumbers to show so we can get rolling on installing cabinets and flooring.
Please, sir, may I have another cabinet to assemble.
This weekend we’ll finish off IKEA-palooza and report on the damaged upper cabinet.…

If You're Gonna Do It, Now's The Time
If You’re Gonna Do It, Now’s The Time
We’re still getting work done on the kitchen. It’s just. It’s just that now we are replumbing the whole house.
The benefits: moving this big pipe going down the kitchen wall and not cutting cabinets, water pressure, no more galvanized pipes.
The drawbacks: money and delays.
Everyone seems to have the same queue card and tells us “If you’re gonna do it, now’s the time.” Sigh. So, we are doing it.

Kitchen Remodel: Day 1 (Demolition)
Kitchen Remodel: Day 1 (Demolition)
We started the remodel today. R— and some friends assembled cabinets while I helped remove the upper cabinets.
The cabinets were wrapped around with drywall and thus a pain in the butt to remove.
Old cloth-backed wallpaper behind the cabinets.
   End of the day.

Almost 11 Months Old
Almost 11 Months Old
We just got back from vacation, and while it was fun, it was also tiring.
Like Luke Skywalker carrying a very tired Yoda.
Things S— can say: Mama, Dada, Dog, Baby, Book, Ball, Hi, and Bye.
Crawling is so last month. Now, she’s climbing stairs!
Dancing to music. Two favorites include “I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross and “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley. Videos are below.
Clapping.
Waving hello and goodbye.

Vacation Reading
The countdown is ticking toward vacation. My reading list includes: Moby Dick (currently reading), Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, The Martian, The Buried Giant, and Lila (though I doubt I’ll get to it).
What’s on your list?

9 Months and Change
9 Months and Change
The past two days were filled with little sleep and a feverish baby. The fever passed and now, S—, is her joyful little self again. Since last I wrote, S— learned to crawl. She stands while holding the edges of coffee tables, windowsills, and couches. S— climbs up our laps, balancing first on our knees to push herself up and then uses our bellies or arms to walk herself up to a stand.
The school…

Writing Zombie Fiction with Chekhov
Writing Zombie Fiction with Chekhov
Finally, after our successful crowdfunding campaign to keep Scintilla going another year, I’ve sat down with Anton Chekhov and we’ve written two zombie mashups. It was hard to choose stories. I made it halfway through “Ward Six” before stopping. I wanted to write “The Zombie (Lady) with the Dog” because I thought it’d be funny to make all of her dialogue incomprehensible. But, does it need to be…
