Current writing advice I'm seeing on TikTok and Insta is telling authors to stop using em dashes in their work because, "AI uses em dashes so people will think you've used AI."
Y'know, the AI that was trained on the stolen work of real authors?
Anyway, I will not be doing that. What I will be doing, however, is adding a note at the start of all my books that no AI was used in the creation of my work because I, the author, did not go to university for four fucking years to study English literature and linguistics only to be told I can't use proper grammar because someone might think a robot wrote it.
Fucking, insane.

This is probably such a dum idea but i’m attempting to hand copy All The Young Dudes French translation. Pray for me. 🙈
Anyway, I found only one translation in AO3 and it was only up to chapter 18. Realistically that is probably more than enough for me…
Doing this to learn some French mostly. But also it kinda makes me happy to have my own copy of the book. Or part of it anyway…

I have to remind myself that all cultures are valid and this is probably very logical and not at all weird and disturbing in American POV but … What the fuck US?
hello! i’ve been recently scrolling the internet and have recently found a concept that you might find interesting. i’m not sure if you already know, but here in the US we don’t allow for there to be any officially lost submarines on record. this means any submarine in our military history that hasn’t returned is not considered missing but still on their mission.
these submarines are called “still on patrol” submarines and there’s about 52 of them ww2. this concept made me think of you because of how easily it can be taken in a more spooky sense.
but a very sweet tradition we also have is that a military radio operator will send out a message to these submarines every year to wish them and merry christmas and let them know that we remember them.
anyways, i just thought this was a lovely concept that might interest you! have a lovely day 💜
What a fantastic and resonant piece of information - go write a story about it!

Dangme, French,Twi, Fante, ASL
If you could instantly be granted fluency in 5 languages—not taking away your existing language proficiency in any way, solely a gain—what 5 would you choose?

Time for updated pinned post.
I used to study languages but life is a bitch sometimes and major burn out took me off my hobbies.
Now I’m thinking of making a come back but like really slow and laid back. I will only dabble with languages now.
I need to learn Dangme to speak with my in-laws. Also the language is just so pretty. Sadly learnign materials are not the best so sometimes I get frustrated.
I have a crush on French and I can read it a bit. So any time I get a chance I do just that. I need more comics in French.
ASL and GSL are so cool! I learnt finger spelling and few signs with my kids. I sometimes watch some short learning content in YouTube and Instagram (from native signers only) and I hope some day I get to learn the language for real. If my stupid busy life allows.
People keep telling me to learn Fante and Twi because they are really useful in Ghana but I can’t be arsed. Sorry.
I used to learn Swedish in school and I can’t lie it would be fun to be able to enjoy some Swedish media (young royals) and music (KAJ, Hooja). Probably not gonna do much about it.
I took some Latin in school too but I can’t remember anything. I still like watching stuff in YouTube about Latin.
Oh, and I’m a Finn. I want to help my kids speak it but I have not been consistent. I always slip to speaking English. I feel so bad.

Trying to go slowly -and I mean very slowly - back to learning Dangme after general burn out.
I have some motivational issues so decided to combine my other interest: Marauders to the studies. Lets see if I can trick my brains.
My problem is hectick phase at work. But to be honest I’m not sure if it will be any better any time soon. Like we are talking about years. Maybe until I retire. So I just have to find a way to adjust to the fact that I will never have time for anything really. But if I can make studies fun maybe it can double as my resting time (but I will be cautious. I have tendency of neglecting actual rest).
Let me know if there are other ways to make studying rare languages fun (without the use of ready resources. Something you do yourself.)

Missing language learning but still too fragile after burnout. Plus i know next month starts a hectic time in my life for the next 6 months. Gonna be working on getting certified as professional administrator and management consultant. I have very little interest in it but this is where life had lead me I guess. Suck it up… So I probably wont start anything serious in terms of language studies.

I disappeared from Tumblr. Work load got out of hands. I was on survival mode for a month. And now I finally got burn out.
Not going to attempt to learn any languages for a while. Need to rest the brain. But I will be back one day…
We did publish a Dangme book with my friend around the Christmas. When I get the strength I will post pictures of it here.

If there is one thing I want to achieve 2025 is to learn to be more diligent at work. To pay attention to quality, to really really take my time before submitting anything. (I have made some huge mistakes lately due to having very right schedules and trusted too much that someone else will do the proofreading). So how will I do it? After every task I should take a 15 min to 30 min break and then read the design product through very very carefully before submission. When possible I will take proof print.
Second target is to include Dangme studies to my daily routine again. I have to still plan how though. My work has become so much more time consuming. Lots of over time and report writing after working hours. I think one way I could give myself more time for Dangme is to drop brainless social media scrolling. It does not give me real joy to scroll endlessly.
I need to write one memo about campus advertising this year. This too is a bit difficult to achieve because of time. But I need two memos for promotion. I think I just have to block time for this in calendar.
I don’t dare make any plans for GSL, French, Swedish and teeline. There is just no time and I want my goals to be realistic. So for these i do them if I get time and if not, well, so be it. At this point I need to prioritize.

In all other languages my strategy is to start from a book I have read multible times in English and still interests me (its Harry Potter). After that anything that is interesting and cheap. Fanfics are good.
For Dangme: anything at all I can find. Can’t be picky. JW material is a good start because they write the same texts in almost every language. Bible is another trusted friend. Then are illustrated folk stories. Also my friend and I have produced some books of our own.
Serious question: how do we read books in our target languages?
Like, does anyone have a strategy?
Do you guys only consume stories you're already familiar with or does it matter to you?

Embarrasing moments 101
My workmate said Fuck! And then immediately apologised.
Now I am a potty mouth my self so I immediately told him not to worry and that he can let loose in my company. All good so far. Then I had the great idea of wanting to express that he is my one friend I can relax around and swear as much as I want. But it came out us:
You are my fuck buddy.
Instant regret.

I am writing a list of sports fixtures and I have placed Women’s tables before men’s. I stopped what I was doing and thought for a second that ”oh I made a mistake, normally its the other way around.” But now I’m thinking I should just keep it this way and wait and see who will be bold enough to come and correct me. Waiting for them to sweat as they try to come up with a non-sexist excuse to make me ”correct” the order of the tables. 😈 This is going to be fun.

Ah finally someone going through worse hell than me. I should be grateful. Hang on there rare language learners. We will win this battle or die doing so but by George we will not give up!!
Broo learning a more obscure language is so hard because there is both so little and so much to work off of. Like I’m trying to figure out where to start with Tibetan, I can barely find any resources due to so much Chinese imperialism within Tibet making Tibetan as a language rare as hell, and each time I think I start to figure out the bare bone basics, I find something that opens more questions than answers. Like what the fuck is a post-postscript? Or a postscript for that matter? And are they different from the standard Tibetan alphabet? WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT ALPHABETS?! WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS, ENGLISH?!
