Learning Agreement
CPSA 250: College Park Arts Scholars Capstone: Solo Project, Spring 2017 Name: Daniela Salem Email: [email protected] Advisor: Kenna Weekly Meeting Time: Mon 11:30-12:00 Purpose/Mission Statement:The purpose for this research experiment is to demonstrate the healing power of art onthe mind. Through a set of group art activities I will prove that art therapy can reduce the stressof college students. I aim to learn which methods work the best for lowering the amount of stressthat college students feel. My goal for the end of the semester is to help find a copingmechanism that lowers the stress and anxiety of everyone that volunteers for my study. Learning Objectives: 1. I will learn how to hold group art therapy sessions that is a mixture of learning arttechniques and coping mechanisms to lower stress. 2. I will hold hour long group art therapy session each week that aims to lower the stressof the volunteers who participate. 3. I will present and analyze my data in hopes of concluding that my hypothesis iscorrect. Workshop Process:I will get together a group of about 10 student volunteers by writing an email and havingit sent to all art scholars in search of willing participants. To come in each week to a designatedroom. Half of them will participate in art therapy sessions while others will not. We will starteach session by having all the volunteers fill out a survey on how they are feeling and what theirlevel of stress and anxiety is based on a predetermined scale. Volunteers that are not in the arttheory session group will leave after they filled out the first survey. We will start our paintingsession by quickly paint what is causing use stress that week. Then I will present our art activityfor the week and guide them through group discussion while we work on our art. For our art wewill use unconventional methods to paint and express how we are feeling onto paper. After thepainting session, the volunteers that choose to will show the group what they have painted, thenall the volunteers will fill out the same survey they did before. The finished project will be me presenting the data I have gathered through the surveys and myanalysis of my findings. Then paintings from the first day and last day will be on display alongwith a final group project will be presented for people to see. Each volunteer will be given a number and when they take a survey or paint a picture they willwrite their number on their paper. All the surveys and paintings will be put up on my tumblrprocess binder each week with only their numbers written on them to keep their answers safe.Pictures of our group sessions will also be available. An agreement stating my expectations frommyself and all participants in my study. This will need to me signed by all volunteers or they willnot be able to participate. Materials: Skin friendly paint, 22 x 28 finger painting paper, plastic cups, paper towels. Resources:http://faculty.weber.edu/molpin/healthclasses/1110/bookchapters/selfassessmentchapter.htm Questions for the survey .0- never 1 - almost never 2 - sometimes 3 - fairly often 4 - very often____ 1. In the last week, how often have you been upset because of something that happenedunexpectedly?_____ 2. In the last week, how often have you felt that you were unable to control the importantthings in your life?_____ 3. In the last week, how often have you felt nervous and stressed?_____ 4. In the last week, how often have you been angered because of things that happenedthat were outside of your control?_____ 10. In the last week, how often have you felt difficulties were piling up so high that youcould not overcome them? Project Timeline: 2/17/17 Find all volunteers 2/19/17 Establish best place and time to meet and meet that week 2/19/17 Paint a self portrait 2/26/17 Paint the last dream you had 3/1/17 First look presentation 3/5/17 Paint the best and worse memory you have 3/12/17 Paint your worse fear 3/19/17 Paint what you love the most 3/24/17 Digital show case poster due 3/26/17 Paint your partner 4/2/17 Paint something you are looking forward to (start turning in paintings) 4/9/17 Paint your favorite part of the semester (last day) (last day to collect paintings) 4/12/17 Second look presentations 4/16/17 Poster Prep time 4//21/17 Showcase posters due 4/29/17 ArtsFest 5/4/17 Academic Show case Revised Capstone: I changed my assignment so that instead of have test subjects I would be my one and only test subject. All the assignments and the timeline will be the same except it will just be me participating. I'll give myself 30 min once a week to complete each assignment. I wanted to do my original idea because I believed that hold session wouldbe more interesting and also give me better data so that I could turn thisinto actual research but the inevitable possibility of people not being ableto make it to every single session would ruin my data so I decided to do itmyself.

NAME: Daniela Salem ADVISOR: Kenna MEETING DATE & TIME: Feb 13 11:30 In 3-4 sentences, please describe what was discussed during your meeting. We discussed how I was going to execute my research. Kenna suggested that I make my sample size smaller so instead of having ten people in the experiments group and ten people in the control group, have ten people total. Also that a group discussion may not be the best because it stuff could be too personal. Also sending out a email to art scholars looking for possible recruits. In 3-4 sentences, please explain what the next steps you will take with your project will be. Write an email so Kenna can send it out to get possible participants for my research. Obtain supplies, possibly using the stuff that is left over in the art supply room. Finalizing my art assignments for each week. Final Reflection
CPSA 250:Individual Capstone Final Reflection (Due via ELMS by Thursday, May 11th!) The questions below are meant to be prompts to get you started, though you may end up wanting to expand on some more than others. Please respond to each question in no less than 4-5 sentences, though you may write more if you wish, and upload your reflection to ELMS by Wednesday, May 11th. 1) What was the most challenging aspect of completing your project, and why? (This might be technical aspects, time constraints, problems that arose, etc.—be honest, this is your space to reflect!) The most challenging aspect of this was originally deciding whether or not I wanted to hold an art therapy session with a group of other students or just myself. I was conflicted because I believed that hold session would be more interesting and also give me better data so that I could turn this into actual research but the inevitable possibility of people not being able to make it to every single session would ruin my data so I decided to do it myself. This also posed a challenge because I had to make time to do these assignment. Because I gave these assignments to myself it was very easy to procrastinate them. 2) Looking at your learning agreement(s) on ELMS, how do you think you succeeded (or not) in completing your Learning Objectives? Which ones did you fulfill? Which ones did you not fulfill? Why? I believe that my learning agreement was for my original idea of holding finger painting session. But I think that we made goals in class that I tried to follow in class. One of the goals I made for myself was to try to give myself an assignment once a week for 7-8 week. I was only able to do six and sometimes it was hard for me to take time and sit down because I had exams or lab reports that I need to do. One thing that I did fulfil was finding a way for me to reduce my stress that I can continue to do in the future. 3) What were the most helpful aspects of the (semi) weekly class meetings? What would you like to see added or subtracted for next year? I actually found most the semiweekly classes very helpful. The classes where we got to talk to our peers and get feedback for our capstones were very helpful. I also found it interesting when we got to see other people’s capstones. I got inspired by many capstones and my peers had very useful ideas and helpful critiques. 4) What part of the project were you most proud of? Why? I was very proud of my findings because they proved my hypothesis correct. Although from my data and the information that I found it cannot be stated that at using art therapy as a stress relieving technique actually works. I found out that it works for me and I can use this in the future (or right now because its finals) to help me relax from all the stress in my life. This also motivates me to want to do more research in the future and hopefully hold sessions. 5) What part of the project would you have changed if you could? Why? If had to change anything I would have kept my original idea of holding finger painting sessions. I let fear of failure overcome me instead of think of other possibilities that could have reduced the error in my research. I think that holding session would have been a lot of fun and would have made my capstone much more interesting. It also would have spread awareness of art therapy and the many benefits it can have on people, especially college students that are stress out to the point of breaking. 6) If you had to offer advice to next year’s Capstone students, what would it be? Although all of the art scholars advisors say this over and over again, but DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! It is very important to be ahead of everything and make time to work on your project so that it turns out the way you want it to be. Take winter break to plan everything that you need to accomplish over the semester so that you are not lost and confused when you have to figure out your capstone or fix it because it turns out you can’t do something. Get the logistics out of the way first so you can focus on the actual capstone.

Last weekend i went to go see Guardian of the galaxy 2 ( I recently lost my phone and the picture of my ticket stub on on there so that is why I dont have a picture of it). I had not seen the first movie so I’m not sure why I thought going to see the sequal was a good idea. I was a little confused the whole time but I stilled enjoyed the movie, it made me want to see the first one. What i picked up from the movie was that the guardians were protecting batteries from monsters in exchange for one of the Guardian’s sister. Then their spaceship crashlands and you meet Ego who is the dad of chris pratt’s character. Turns our that Ego killed chris’ mom and only had him so he could unlock hi powers.

Last saturday I atteneded the undergraduate dance majors concert. I was blown away by the talent that these students had, I even saw Sydney who is also in art scholars. The show was broken up into about 6 performances, each performance was choreographed by an undergraduate student. The costumes and lighting design were also done by undergraduate students. Most of the dances were modern but there was a couple of hip hop ones too. I really enjoyed seeing this concert because I am in modern class right now, and being exposed to different choreographers work helps me in develop my own ideas class.

Last sunday I was fortunate enough to go to the Hirshorn museum and see the Yayoi Kusama exhibit. I did not know much about the exhibit before going but I learned a lot while I was there. What I did not like about this exhibit was that to get into each exhibit you had to wait in line for about 1 hour and you were only in them for about 20 -30 seconds. That is why I only went to about 3 of them. I really wish I could have seen them all but I did not want to spend all day waiting and I had an exam the next day. However what I did see was incredible, I loved that she took somthing as simple as a mirror and lights and made an amazing piece of artwork.

Midterm Reflection
My capstone is a fairly easy assignment once I changed it to focus on me instead of having a group to teach. I chose to eliminate the volunteers that I would have been using for this research capstone, but if one person had not shown up for one session, it would have thrown all my data off. If I focus only on myself then this will not happen, the only problem is that I cannot say that I am researching finger painting as a technique for reliving stress among college students because I only have one participant, which is me, so instead I have to say that I am researching to see the benefits of using art therapy as a stress reliving technique for myself. So I have to work on the wording that I will use on my poster so that it is clear that this research is for the sole purpose of finding a stress relief for myself. This also allows me to be flexible with when I paint. I aim to have it about once a week around the same time but that varies depending on how much work I have to do for the week.
A question you may be asking is why aren’t there any pictures of my finger paintings? That is because I left them back home, I brought them home so that I could do this assignment but forgot them coming up. I asked my mom to send me a picture of them but she couldn’t find them, but worry not because I will upload them as soon as possible so that you may see what I have created.

This was my inspiration to how I would be approaching my art techniques and the themes/ assignments I would give myself everytime I painted. These assignemnts include, painting my reoccuring nightmare, my fear for the future, my favorite part of the week, an emotion I am feeling at the time of painting and many more. This also inspired the first painting which was a self portrait.

The canvases I am using are 12in x 9in, here is a honey nut cheerios box for scale (not family size box). I chose this size because it was big enough to show off at ArtsFest but not big enough that painting would become more of a chore. I also used acrylic paint instead of finger painting because acrylic paint can dry in clumps, giving the painting texture. I chose this brand of paint because I already had it.
