Textures I might use
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These textures really add to the art work and make it look more complex and traditional, it makes simple artwork a lot more interesting and pleasing to look at.
This especially add to my work as i’m going for a old look as my book is set in the past.

Who Done It?
play around with the idea of mystery, pay homage to these classic novels.  Cover for the killer/victim/detective. - How do you show them on the cover? Do you want to give away who the killer is on the killers cover?
For my first cover i would like to show the detective as a main character and have her in the foreground looking very intense to create a dramatic scene like in most 40s book covers, in the background i want the victims body lifeless giving some backstory.
secondly i will show the victim, she’ll be in the foreground and closer up so we can see her face clearly, not sure about the background.
lastly i will have all three on the cover, killer in the middle detective on the left and the victim on the right, the killer will not be shown only certain features and make the whole scene mysterious.
Also throughout i will add different effects to my book covers, such as filters, textures and disintegration effects like a watery wash or opacity disintegration.
Tumblr media
Discuss murder mystery books, vintage book covers they use. Do you like them? Dislike them? Can you adapt your own style into something similar?  i THINK YOU CAN, AND IT WOULD LEAD TO INTERESTING RESULTS.
Tumblr media
Knives Outs - spoofs these classic whodunnit murder mystery books. Really think about the filters and edits we could do to your drawings to make them look vintage and hand painted.
Tumblr media
Discuss the over the top nature of this cover- does it work for the era? Would it work now?
this is a very dramatic scene, i like how its positioned with the mirror revealing who the woman is scared of its also very stand offish as she's reaching for a gun which makes you want to find out more the illustration is very well positioned.
I like the font and how dramatic it is “the KEY”, it really makes it stand out it and its also quite simple and easily readable.
Pulp art is interesting because it’s drawn like a cartoon but it has very realistic lighting and very dynamic poses and composition, because pulp paper is inexpensive the art has a very noticeable style that looks vintage and a little rugged.
The colours in this piece are in the darker range of colours until you get to the flashlight and the woman’s dress which have quite light colours, this contrast makes this even more dramatic as its showing us the main focus point at first, but as you look around in the background you begin to pick out some details like the gun on the table.
Tumblr media
An artist that created Mock-ups of Metroid as a classic sci fi novel, and turned Mario and Peach into a classic kidnapping revenge story.
I like this piece because the artist made really cartoony characters in to live action characters and Gave them classic action movies features such as Mario holding a gun, within the piece on the right you can see that the layout is interesting as it has mario in the foreground and princess peach in the background , it’s almost like he’s thinking about her and needing to save her and it’s showing the main details such as the city in the middle blending in with princess peaches dress, this is creating a very dramatic scene and makes it very interesting to look at.
I will use a scene like this and to put my characters in a similar position on the page and probably use a effect something like disintegration on the bottom of the characters.
Tumblr media
Then discuss how games that are set in a similar era to these classic books have also intentionally copied the art style and look, to help set the scene.  Bioshock and LA Noire
The game L.A. Noire is based on the movie LA confidential and others, the setting in LA Noire is1940s and has many references to other Noire movies sometimes outright taking names from movies.
The concept art made for L.A. noire is very well composed especially this piece which has one of the victims on the left, the main character Cole Phelps in the middle and a singer on the right, within this piece you can see that the characters are layered on each other which makes it look a lot more interesting then just putting them next to each other, I also like the textured disintegration effect they put on the bottom it gives it some mystery .
Tumblr media
This cover is interesting as the man perhaps the killer is not shown and it only shows us the out line and the most noticeable thing about the cover is his gun which is mostly likely the main focus in this scene,..

Penguin Books
Tumblr media
Penguin was founded by Allen lane he was on his way to meet a friend and saw that the books in the bookstall at Exeter St Davids were in very bad quality and overpriced, he realised that he want to make books that were good and cheap for everyone to read.
penguin has published over 1 million books since they started in 1934 and publish 15,000 annually.
Tumblr media
On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts is a book which purely looks at murder in an aesthetic light, its also about how every philosopher over the last two centuries has been murdered and if there was an attempt on the philosopher then theres nothing to them.
Tumblr media
The Terrors of the Night was one of my first choices but i decided to skip it as the blurb was very misleading and instead of talking about demons and spirts it just rambled on about old Christian beliefs and old evils, but if i wanted to make book covers about Christianity then i would use this book, but overall i was interested in the demons and spirt part at first, which would of been interesting and i might try that in another project.

shal.e
Shal.e is a instagram artist and a youtuber he’s from south Korea he gained popularity from his amazing art work he focuses on women but sometimes he draws men as well, his style is anime like with some dark themes.
I like his work as he also has a similar sketching style to some of the other artists i’ve mentioned, they use grey scale which is interesting as they use the same techniques but their art work is so different looking.
I’ve followed his work closely and i often look at his speed art which has a lot of different sketching techniques such as sketching a box as a reference point or just drawing the overall shape and just layering on the detail .

guweiz
Zheng Wei Gu (aka Guweiz) started drawing at the age of 17 and was inspired by a how to draw a anime face tutorial and after 7 years he began work with art directors and clients world wide.
I would like to learn to use similar colour pallets like guweiz as they are dark colours that are followed up by a bright background, this creates a contrast between the foreground and background which looks really unique and simple yet complicated as he add a lot of detail.
he also uses black and white for his sketches but i have been researching him because of his advice towards art and how to be consistent and just useful tips.

Zdzisław Beksiński
Beksinski is a polish horror artist who was well know for his paintings and photographs all of his paints are untitled so the interpretion is left up to the viewer, but most of his work is inspired by war and alot of his art is war themed sometimes in subtle way, he also used alot of the skills he developed when he learnt about architecture.
I like his work as he uses alot of his skills from architecture to make his paintings look collosal and the use of perspective creates that, i would like to look at the way he uses perspective and apply it to my own work as i need to work on how I paint the background.
One of the things i used is a grid to help me draw the angles of my walls correctly and i hope i use more of that, i got the idea of using grids from bekisinski when i was researching his background.

WLOP
Wlop is a chinese artist who is known for his amazing artwork,he uses grey scale for his paintings, he also uses a very soft brush for most of his sketching and his characters.
Wlop is one of my favourite artists i hope i can implement some of his processes, as he looks like he has a good hang of how he begins a painting.
WLOPs drawing method consists of making shapes with the lasso tool or sketching rough shapes and then layering on brushstrokes and detail, he uses black and white at first to get his values right and keeps building on the foundation of the the painting, once he gets to a stage where theres enough detail he adds blush and then a skin colour very lightly at this point he also gives his character clothing detail and any noticeable features, I’ve tried and i think succeeded to use his method not to his extent but his technique has helped me focus on my values and i think i’ve already improved in that aspect.

I’m going to be trying to do 3 book covers so I’m doing some research on different poses and I’m not to familiar with many and this will broaden my understanding of angles and how to draw them correctly.

Julian opie has an interesting style he uses solid blocks of colour to show shades and while doing that it creates layers that make his work pop and doesn’t look flat and boring.
In some of his other work he does very minimalistic features such as the eyes, mouth and nose, he also uses very thick lines which gives his work a unique look.
