Business Plan Development

Before beginning this course, my original goal was to begin my business plan focusing on what my vision for the company is. I wanted the instructor of the course to see why I’ve developed this business and how it will benefit each participant specifically. The curriculum of the course allows for me to meet my original goal by helping me to keep in mind my company pitch of who we are as a company, what we do, why before five services and how the services will be rendered. By keeping the answers to these questions In mind I was able to through each segment of the business plan assignments with purpose, realistic figures, and actual operational planning.

Throughout the program, my insight of the business has broadened tremendously.  I have taken into consideration that my targeted market is larger than just a local community and by expanding the reach of my services it would increase business awareness and increase the revenue of the company.  The program has helped me to realize that it takes more than just an idea,  key employees, passion, and money to ensure that a business can operate efficiently and be successful.

The most important lesson that I have learned from this course is that it’s easy to have an idea for a business but you have to consider that there may be other businesses within my industry that will offer the same product or service as mine.  I have to really consider what will set my business apart from the competition. People may have options but I would have to show them that they would benefit more from my services than the competition. Another thing that I have learned is that most businesses thrive because of the employees that take part in making the business operate effectively.  In order to ensure that business operations run effectively there has to be proper team management along with good morals and ethics.

When I think about how the business can be funded I never considered all the information that would need to go into a business plan to show investors how they would benefit from investing in my company.  You need to show investors your anticipated growth of the business in its beginning stages along with how you intend to use the funding. I never thought about what investors stand to gain or lose when they choose to invest in any business until I began this degree program.   I will apply the material learned in this course by further developing my business plan I am telling to become an entrepreneur and the business concept that I have used for the entire EBMS program is the business that I intend to open one day.

Advanced Entertainment Law Mastery Journal

Before taking this course, I had no idea what I would learn. With planning to enter the entertainment industry as a business owner and focus on writing, I naturally assumed that all I would be exposed to is copyright and infringement and how to negotiate legal contracts. After taking the Advanced Entertainment Law course, I have concluded that I never truly comprehended the levels of legal concepts and liabilities and all that It takes to legally execute an idea or business. I was not prepared to review and analyze court cases and opinions, but after analyzing them, I realized all of the ways that a person could become liable for even the smallest things that they would not even think to consider.

As I mentioned before I solely thought about copyright and infringement as the only liability that I could face. I did not think that other liabilities could affect my business such as fraud, negligence, defamation, misrepresentation, breach of contract or even wrongful termination. I was so caught up in the actual business, that I forgot what it would take to run the business and the types of liabilities that can occur with that. In my opinion, the most important takeaway from this course is to not only focus on the business itself but each aspect that will allow for the business to run. When you lose sight of the things that you do not think is important, it is easy to allow for those things to cause you trouble in the long run. I never thought much about the employees that I planned to hire and how they may impact the business. I could encounter a disgruntled employee or even a scheming one that could potentially bring legal troubles.

It is also important to take into consideration on how the court will rule any potential case that I may be involved in. Despite good intentions, a court may not always be on my side either. This course has helped me to realize to be prepared for any outcome and always have a contingency plan to rectify the situation with whoever was done wrong, or do my best to justify my intentions.

Overall the point that I am trying to make is everything that you do is a liability, but it is up to me as to how I will proceed with them. The question remains will I be proactive, active or reactive?

Digital Marketing

The Digital Marketing course was a simple and yet broad. The goal initially was to learn what the best marketing practices were. After the first week of taking this marketing course, I have come to realize that there is so much more to marketing than I thought. The course on Lynda.com that I chose was Content Marketing Foundations. I chose this course because I assumed it would be the most fitting option as a “beginner” in marketing.  How can one really understand the concept of marketing if they do not understand the foundation of it?

After finishing the course the three key takeaways from this course are Developing your brand voice, creating content arcs, and setting content goals. Each of these contents is important because I have realized that without being able to complete all three tasks there would not be a well-developed product or an audience to market to.  By developing the brand people consumers will be able to distinguish your particular brand from another similar to the brand that you are marketing. Therefore, your brand will likely be the one that the consumer chooses to engage with.

While creating content for the brand to market it is important to remember the target audience. What will appeal to them? Are there trends that you can follow, and if so how will you be innovative? These are things that need to be considered when brainstorming content creation for your marketing strategy.

Setting goals are the best way to successfully market a product or service. Through having goals it would be easier to know how you will initiate marketing and what resources will be utilized.  Not only will this help with organization and overall but it will aid in knowing the views of the stakeholders and integrating those views into the marketing plan. It will help to focus on factors such as why you are offering the product or service,  how can consumers benefit from it, and what short term to long term goals can you make to help you succeed.

I will apply the material learned in this Lynda course to my personal and professional journey by having a  basic marketing plan. My plan will entail considering the view/wants of my stakeholders, developing a brand that will appeal to my target audience and establish proper marketing methods that will ensure my success.

Entertainment Business Finance

Before beginning this course, I had an idea of what I thought it would be like. I was correct in believing that it involved the financials of starting up my business and running it. What I did not anticipate were concepts such as IPOs and opportunity costs. There was and still is so much more to business finance that I need to learn to ensure that my business is successful. I cannot only rely on expecting it to do well because people will gravitate toward my services, I need to have a financial plan. I am left thinking about the decisions that I make today, and how it will affect my business in the long run. I also have to think about contingency plans for the time when my business will hit a lull and how I can manage to stay running financially. Everything that I have learned this month will be very helpful to plan my business. There will be unexpected costs, a time where I will not see a profit and spending more money than I will be making. When I think of these things I immediately think of how a business can go belly up if you are not prepared. This course has given me insight into this matter and ideas as to what I can do prepare for this time. No longer will I be naive to believe that the first year or even the first five years that I will see major revenue. I will apply the concept of opportunity costs to my personal life as well. I am more conscious about my decisions and how each one will impact my life. Each decision should not only be considered for its instant gratification, but also as to how it can benefit me in the long run.

Project Team Management Journal

Before beginning this course I had goals set in my mind of what I thought I would accomplish within the course. Now that I am looking back on day one of the course and reflecting everything that I have learned within the last four weeks, I realized that the goals that I had in my did not even scratch the surface of what I would achieve. When I say this, what I mean is that I have taken away much more than I expected that I would.  Initially, I wanted to:

•    Learn the best Practices of Productivity •    Distinguish my passions: what I love to do, what I can get paid to do, and what I do well •    Identify My strengths and weaknesses •    Strategize how to inspire motivation within a Team •    Become perceptive to others feelings and find good working dynamic Discover basic concept of a business model •    Learn core business model concept and use my skills to develop a personal model.

It seems as though when I made these goals, I did not truly think about what they meant. To lead a team, you must first learn things about yourself. I was not aware that the key to being a leader within a group is to first, distinguish what my qualities are, and then determine how I can utilize those qualities to organize and lead a team. Also seeing what my stronger qualities were, I was forced to acknowledge which ones I lacked. Through this course, I was able to recognize that a good working dynamic has to be maintained through a team, to maintain a healthy working relationship successfully and complete a project.

Through this course, I will be able to apply my new skill to my professional career because there will be times that I will not be able to work independently. I not only find this course insightful but necessary within the entertainment industry.

Leadership Mastery Journal

Before beginning this course, I set goals on what I wanted to accomplish by the end of course.   My goal initially was to learn leadership skills so that I would be able to apply them to my career in the entertainment industry.  The goal that I had set for this course had not changed, but after three weeks I can say that I now realize that there are two different methods to being an effective leader. Through reading John C.  Maxwell's Developing the Leader Within You I was able to determine the type of leader that I want to become. According to Maxwell the main traits that a person needs to possess to become an effective leader is to be influential and to have a vision.

 I always dreamed of becoming a successful writer. In the past when I aspired to be a novelist, I knew that being a leader wasn't required. But when I began to explore the endless possibilities of being a writer and the many different directions that a writing career could take the possibility of me becoming a leader became a reality. Through my aspirations in a career in screenwriting and production, leadership skills are a requirement because a screenwriter and a producer need a team to produce creative content. I highly value the work of others because without the work of others I wouldn't be able to be successful in my endeavors. And I realize that's the best working environment for productivity is a positive work environment. Therefore, I will take the lessons from this course material and apply it to my leadership abilities.

 It is imperative that people look up to me and want to work hard on pending projects. I would have to do everything within my power to influence my team, motivate them and to continue to provide a positive environment so that we would be able to produce phenomenal work; and most importantly from my team to see my vision and help my vision come to life. The reason I chose Maxwell's leadership style is that the career path that I plan to take requires more than one skill and one person to complete Motion pictures successfully. I do not possess the skills that are necessary to get this job done.  Therefore, I would need help to be successful.  

 According to Maxwell (1993), people do not want to be managed because management is a formal and impersonal way of getting a task done while leadership is allowing others to see the task at hand division that you have for the task and feeling motivated want to help you to complete the task.  I never want to tell people what to do; I always want people to see what I see and have the same desire and motivation as myself to be successful.

Focused, hard work is the real key to success. Keep your eyes on the goal, and just keep taking the next step towards completing it. If you aren’t sure which way to do something, do it both ways and see which works better.

This quote made me think about this month journey through the mastery course. I now know that its success should not be measured or only attained in the most logical way. Sometimes there are other ways, it will just have to be up to you to embrace the other possibilities.

Michelle Obama gave such a great speech. She made me think about the fundamentals of success. "Your success will be determined by your own fortitude, you own confidence, your own individual hard work," (Obama, 2009). Most people do not realize that they have all of the tools to succeed right in front on them all they have to do is use it. Life can teach you many things through various situations, but it is up to you to take in the lesson and turn it into something positive, something powerful. I admire this woman so much because not only is she a motivator, but she sets the best example of what type of woman I aspire to be.
