“You answer it, I’m too shaky,” Alex whispered in a hurry and thrusted the phone into Kelly’s hands. She sighed at her girlfriend’s dramatics, a small grin playing around her lips before she answered the call and put it on speaker.

“Hello Trisha, how are you?” Kelly asked while Alex grabbed her hand a little too hard.

“I’m good, you too? I thought I had called Alex’s phone?”

“You did, she’s here with me, you’re on speaker. We’re both just a little nervous.”

Trisha chuckled a little but collected herself quickly again. “Well, you don’t need to be, I deliver good news. You’re approved for fostering; I just got the message myself.”

Summary

It takes some time, but when Alex and Kelly finally get approved to be foster parents, they soon get to foster a young, smart and observant alien boy, recently crash-landed on earth.

While Alex works to find his mother through DEO resources Kelly has to handle a difficult situation at one of the group homes she works at. When everything goes sideways there, Kelly feels responsible to take care of the children - one especially has snuck into her heart.

"Get in here with me ?" she asks softly, trying to steady her voice and failing miserably. "You're hurt." Alex shakes her head which does indeed hurt, a faint ringing taking over the edge of her hearing. "I'm not so hurt that I can't take a bath with my girlfriend."

Sleepless nights and screaming nightmares. Kelly held Alex tight until daybreak, another rough night where Alex somehow couldn’t fall asleep until dawn began to creep through the windows. Kelly sighed, planting a gentle kiss on Alex’s cheek...

Narrow streets were made narrower by people lining up trying to hawk their wares. Decay was everywhere they looked, and Alex and Kelly were losing the battle to keep the worst off the hem of their dresses. Kelly glanced at her watch briefly, trying to not draw attention to the modern day item, that had been heavily modified by Lena before they left, to primarily act as a tracking device.

"I could polish and paint them to make them look more new, if you wanted me to." She offered. "Free of charge." "No, no. It's your job, you shouldn't do it for free. But thanks for offering." The contractor nodded again, and then finished her coffee. "I should get back inside. And you shouldn't be here for too long, it's a bit chilly today." "Who is whose boss, here?" Kelly jested, easily. Almost too easily. OR, Kelly learn to deal with grief, with the help of a new friend and a contractor she hired to renovate the home, in a new town that was once meant for her and her fiancée.

EXCERPT:

Alex stared down the mountain goat. It stood on the path between her and the hotel and refused to move. It’s horns curled over its ears, and it pawed the ground. A warning likely. She held out her arm to keep Kelly behind her.

She was not going to be bested by a damn goat. “Shoo,” she waved a hand at it. The goat refused yet again by stomping its hoof, its beady black eyes focused on Alex. What if she tackled it? Maybe, if she’s fast enough, she can knock it aside and scare it off? Or she’ll end up kicked in the face or chest.

“Maybe don’t antagonize it?” Kelly whispered.

That would be a fitting summary of their entire vacation, wouldn’t it? Don’t antagonize the goats. Don’t antagonize the cats. Don’t antagonize the ghosts. The universe seemed determined to make her and Kelly’s vacation a wild and irritating romp. Hell romp for Alex, though Kelly preferred to call it ‘therapeutic.’

Ghosts, goats, and cats were not what Alex deemed therapeutic, but who was she to deny her wife’s needs?

“Fine, but it still needs to move,” Alex whispered back. She took a deep breath and decided to try the ‘be bigger and scarier’ tactic. She braced herself, waved her arms above her head, and tried to look as large as possible. “Booo! Shooo!”

The goat stared at her and huffed again, unimpressed.

She needed a new tactic. A ‘what would her daughter and sister do’ sort of tactic.

Summary

Alex: "I'm not afraid of no goat." _______________ The goat stared down Alex, its beady black eyes likely murderous. Alex did not have time for this. "Maybe don't antagonize it?" Kelly suggested softly. She held one of the cats, the other nowhere to be seen. She thought of all the actions and decisions that brought her to this moment. Of how quickly this vacation went off the rails, as if the universe refused to let her rest. It was kind of pissing her off. This goat became the ire of all her frustrations.
