Kelly walks into the house she shares with her wife---their new, adoptive, daughter in her arms. She pauses in the doorway. “Alex? Honey, I’m home!” She calls out. “Esme is here too.” she adds, her eyes glancing down at the newborn in her arms.

“Coming! Just need to finish the baby’s room.” Alex responds, her voice muffled from the distance.

Kelly pauses. “You mean you haven’t finished sanitizing the room? Alex, I told you to sanitize it at least four hours ago.” She starts down the hallway. Alex’s head pops out from the bedroom.

“No... You said satanize it.” Alex says slowly. Panic is written across her face.

“Oh my god, what did you do?” Kelly walks faster.

“Nobody panic! I can fix this before the demons are summoned.” Alex says hurriedly, her eyes widening to alarming size as she tries to bar Kelly from the entryway.

Kelly sees the pentagram on the floor and just --- the disappointment in her sigh is evident enough that Esme blinks her eyes open.

“Gonna get me for this, right?” Alex sighs out.

“You know I am.”

Rings (Kelly character study)

The engagement ring was different.

Kelly couldn’t stop staring. The ring on her hand was a simple gold band - with a small oval diamond embedded on top. This isn’t my engagement ring, she thought to herself. But it is my engagement ring. This is my engagement ring-

She looked up at the skyline of National City, confused. I’m getting married, she thought. I’m getting married- to-

But National City wasn’t National City - the skyscrapers disappeared, leaving brown fields in their wake, sun shining down on a blistering hot day that just tipped into 100F. Kelly could feel the sweat forming under her helmet, cascading down her temple. She watched as a small tank made its way down the road.

Riley.

Her fiancee was inside the tank - she could feel it in her bones, feel it in the way the gold band burned on her finger. Somewhere in the back of her mind was the spare thought of ‘I wasn’t here for this’, but that didn’t matter as she began to race for the road, arms waving, shouting “roadside bomb, roadside bomb!” at the distant vehicle.

But the tank seemed to only get farther as she ran, seemed to slip away as she felt her feet being pulled from under her. When suddenly, it was enveloped in flames.

Kelly jolted awake, gasping for air, feeling the sweat pooling down her back. Bewildered, she turned to find a sleeping Alex to her left. To her right, she found her nightstand, with an antique silver engagement ring sitting on top.

Kelly could feel the tension rising in her throat, the tears that pricked at the corner of her eyes, a feeling of overwhelming guilt knowing that her gold band sat in a small box in her closet, packed with a letter she had memorized by heart.

Kelly quietly kicked off her quilt, making her way to the kitchen as adrenaline pulsed in her veins. Numbly, she didn’t remember turning on the lights, or boiling the water, or pulling out the packet of chamomile tea from the box. She took her seat on the couch, pulling out a lighthearted romance novel. But her eyes couldn’t seem to quite catch the page, her mind stuck on her nightmare. The ring. The tank. The flames.

“Hey,” came a quiet voice behind her.

Kelly turned as Alex took a seat next to her. Alex didn’t close in for a hug like she normally would, but instead watched Kelly carefully, seeming to sense her withdrawal. “Are you okay?” Alex asked.

“I’m fine,” Kelly said, giving Alex a small smile. “Just couldn’t sleep.”

Alex tilted her head, worry creasing her brow. “A nightmare?”

“I’m fine,” Kelly said, turning away.

“Self-soothing.”

Kelly’s mouth twitched into a smile. I guess she does listen to me when I talk about therapy, she thought to herself. “And that’s why I’m fine.”

Alex pursed her lips, looking down. “You don’t have to go through this alone, Kelly,” she said.

Kelly swallowed harshly. “We just got engaged,” she said, choking on a small laugh. “I don’t want to make you sad about my nightmares over my dead fiancee when we just got engaged.”

Alex reached over, placing her hands on Kelly’s. “I’m here, Kelly,” she said adamantly, “For all of you.”

Numb and exhausted, Kelly finally allowed her eyes to meet Alex’s - only for the warmth of Alex’s eyes to sweep her under. Kelly struggled to choke back tears for moments as Alex looked on patiently, and finally Kelly reached out, Alex quickly pulling her into a tight embrace as Kelly began to sob.

There was a lifetime to unpack. Black and lesbian and closeted, deeply in love but only able to celebrate in secret. She had received the call of Riley’s death through the grapevine - there was no official channel for her to be next-of-kin, no way to declare ‘secret fiancee due to commanding officer being a bigot’ with her military commanders. To be a perfect woman of color in the military meant the golden engagement ring had to sit in a closet with the rest of her heart, and it all ended with “Hey, did you hear about Riley? Weren’t you close?”

Moments passed as Alex rubbed at her back, quiet and still, and Kelly could feel herself melt into the embrace. In the calm of Alex’s breaths, Kelly’s mind drifted back to Ormfell. How in the aftermath, she had simply asked for Alex to hold space for her. That in her exhaustion, that was what she truly needed. Space for silence, space for the glimmers of experience she felt up for sharing. 

And someday, she would need to. Someday she would need to talk about what it was like to fight for a country where her own breath couldn’t be taken for granted, what it meant for trauma to compound in the loneliness of secrecy. Someday she needed to talk about what that all meant.

But it wasn’t what she needed now. “Can I talk about her?” Kelly whispered.

“Of course,” Alex said, nuzzling into her. “I’m here.”

I don’t know if this is going to make sense, but I think there is a theme of letting go of burden in your fics.

Like Kara in Enchanted AU feels burdened by gender in ways she didn’t realize, and Alex in the Dansen fic feels burdened by the idea of soulmates until she realizes that’s not what it had to be, and supercorptoper fic went from the stress of being outed and being able to diffuse that.

I never really saw that, in all honesty, but I can absolutely understand what you mean.

I guess I saw all three fics and their "themes" being disconnected but when you get to the most basic, I suppose, interpretation it could be this.

But it does makes sense, I'm very "okay, there isn't really anything you can do to change this now, so, you learned something, let's go to the next thing", if that makes sense (except when I'm obsessing, you know?)

Mama Knows Best

Alex is stubborn at the best of times, always convinced that she knows better. Whether she’s arguing with Kelly, her girlfriend, or sassing Kelly, her Mama, she’s always right. Until, well, she’s not, which is far more often that Alex would ever admit and Kelly is far too kind to remind her unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Which, right now, it is.

She’s clearly sick, no matter how hard Alex tries to hide it, and Kelly isn’t for one second going to entertain the idea of her going out to meet Kara and Lena at Al’s. Though, no amount of gentle coaxing seems to make the little one understand that and Kelly is quickly losing her vast amount of patience.

“Mama, you don’t…. I’m fine.”

Alex stomps her foot against the carpet as Kelly silently stares her down, hiding a grimace when the little one wipes her nose on her sleeve. Sighing, she grabs a tissue from the nightstand and encourages Alex to blow, her brow furrowing at the pathetic little whimper that follows.

“You’re not fine, sweetheart, and you don’t have to pretend that you are,” Kelly murmurs, “not with me.”

“Not pretending,” Alex grumbles, scowling down at the floor as her foot stomps yet again.

“Calm that angry foot right now, little one, and look at Mama when she’s talking to you.” Kelly moves closer and carefully tilts Alex’s chin upwards with the tip of her forefinger, “we’re just having a conversation right now and you might notice that I’m not raising my voice or speaking to you disrespectfully, so do you think you could do the same for me, please?”

A sigh, a grumble, and a sneeze later, Alex nods.

“Yes, Mama,” she murmurs, “I’m sorry.”

5. Do you respond to comments?

Yes, I do usually respond, though not always right away. I enjoy chatting about my fics, so don’t hesitate to ask questions, but I don’t give out spoilers though.  

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

When She’s Gone, the Darkness Comes – Oof. It was so sad I had to write a second chapter. I much prefer happy endings (teen)

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

All of them have a happy ending of some kind, or they will once they’re completed. Though there are some with happy endings like Speak Now and Tis the Damn Season. Smut. I’m talking about smut (explicit)

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Yeah, though I’ve been mostly lucky. I don’t know why people leave hate on any fics really. If you don’t like something, close the tab.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes. It started as a small scene here or there when it was a natural progression of the fic, but now I occasionally right full smut fics and pwp like those found here (explicit)

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Kind of, but the characters are all from within the Arrowverse/ DC Comics universes somewhere.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of. I don't understand why someone would do this. Please respect writers.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes. I Believe in a Thing Called Love is also in Spanish Creo en una cosa llamada amor (teen)

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I’m currently working on one with @thatonebirdwrites, though it's not published. It’s a Supercorp fic where Kara is a building inspector and when she goes to inspect Lena’s home, she meets Lena’s daughter to tells her the floor is lava, so naturally Kara has to ensure that issue gets resolved.  

14. What's your all time favorite ship?

Supercorp. But I do love most wlw ships

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I intent to finish all of my active WIPs. I have some WIP ideas that may or may not ever get going, but once I start a fic, I intend to finish it.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I have no idea… I guess easter egg type stuff or like blending canon into storylines. If your a reader and there's something you think is a strength I have, let me know.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Actually writing. Words be hard. And it's hard to find the time.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I do it sometimes, probably not well. I like to include the translation in the fic (unless the characters themselves aren’t supposed to understand until later). But I'm sure the translations aren't fully right as I only use google translate and the Kryptonian dictionary.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Supercorp. I started writing fiction in Dec 2020. Before that it was all scientific research papers for uni.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

I suppose What Has Been Lost (Mature). It was what started this crazy adventure, has been the most challenging piece, and my longest (still ongoing). It truly blends lore and characters from across the Arrowverse and DC Comics into a human world and original storyline.

This is a deeper and more detailed version of the 20 questions for AO3 fanfic writers. Thanks to @TetsujinOtaku88 for the tag. I'm doing this #Supercorp style.

1) How do you keep getting ideas for your ship / fandom?

I think the Supercorp Fandom is pretty self-perpetuating because the canon needs to be fixed and there's lots of AUs to put them in. Plus there are so many talented people whose art, video edits, and fanfic fuel each other.

2) Which authors inspire you in your fandom, and why are they so freakishly good?

Following the answer above I think the beauty of Supercorp is that it attracts really talented creators. I love reading @searidings, @jazzfordshire's fix-its and canon-adjacent stuff, @lgbtimelords, @coffeeshib, @mycatismyeditor, and @snowydragonscave just to name a few. They have such a deftness of language and an understanding of the characters that it's hard to stop reading!

3) Aside from the characters of your main ship, who are the characters you love to write?

I really love Sam Arias, Jess, and Alex. I wish I could get a better handle on Kelly because DANSEN forever. I also have a soft spot for Eliza and a deliciously evil liking for Lillian.

4) Are there pairings or tropes you know for sure you'd never write about? Which ones?

Karamel, Lames, Top Lena, Bottom Kara. To each their own. It's just not my thing.

5) What is your writing process and why is it cursed?

Carry around a little notebook to scribble ideas, lines, sometimes whole scenes. Figure out a rough outline / structure / plot. Do unnecessary amounts of research. Open doc file. Plunge into dismay and self-doubt. Watch the show. Get frustrated. Open the doc file. Be filled with despair and self-loathing. Get a blast of inspiration and productivity. Cycle through mental instability, writer's block, and actual writing. Get dragged by Kara and Lena to unanticipated places that derails what I intended to do. Sighing and doing what the muses want. The elation of completion. Struggling with summaries and tags. Posting. Crippling anxiety and running away from AO3. Lather, rinse, repeat.

6) What is your favorite part of your writing process?

The elation of completion. The unnecessary research is fun too.

7) What’s the weirdest thing you’ve had to research for a fic?

Cherry tree mutations and the structure of yakuza organizations in modern Japan.

8) Is there a particular writing rule you struggle with (grammar, spelling, tense, reality in general)?

Different tenses in the same document. Also it's and its.

9) What was your hardest scene to write so far and why?

Describing Kara's post-PZ night terrors and Lena’s fever dreams in Deliverance. Also the action sequence at the end of that story was so difficult.

10) Have your characters ever done something you didn’t expect, changing your plot completely?

ALL THE TIME.

11) If you could converse with any of the characters, who would it be and why?

Both of them. After I come to my senses and out of a dead faint because I was meeting them at all. And then I would die of sapphication.

12) What are some of the tropes or themes that you find yourself returning to in your writing?

Oh my usual tags are: light angst, tooth-rotting fluff, friends-to-lovers, Lena needs a hug, Kara gets a hug.

13) What's your most important resource as a writer?

Talking with other writers!

14) Can you share some of your strategies for editing and revising your work?

I usually give it some time before I edit so I can have relatively fresh eyes. Spell checking, punctuation, and grammar suggestions help you catch things but NOTHING beats reading it over yourself.

15) Which is worse: making the summary, picking the tags, or the anxiety when you post your fic?

Definitely the anxiety!!!

16) How do you define sucess for your fanfic - hits? Kudos? Comments? Bookmarks? Or just if you like it?

I think it's good to track kudos and I love getting comments. But ultimately I wrote for my enjoyment or for my peace of mind because the idea would not let me go.

17) Do you have a playlist for your favorite character / ship?

Nope but that's not a bad idea. 🤔

18) If fan art was going to be made from your work, which fic would you pick and which fan artist would you like to create it?

Wow I'd be thrilled if any of them got art. I am partial to the way @rustingcat draws Sakura blossoms though so maybe Cat for No Wrong Seasons.

19) How many WIPs do you currently have?

8 total. Finishing "the Arcana", "The Sound of Veracity" (Part 2), Prequel and Smutilogue of "Always With Me, Always With You", Supercorptober 2023 "Art" prompt, SG Mayhem fic, the Telepathy/Empathy fic, the Body Swap fic.

20) What's your advice to new fanfic writers?

I posted my first Supercorp story in March 2023 feeling it would be completely lost in this large fandom and having no hope for it. I felt that I was too late. That everything had been done (and done better). I did find readers who liked and some who really loved my work. But mostly I learned to write for myself, which has truly been a gift. Write for yourself. Write what you'd want to see. You'll get better at it over time.

14. That one thing you see in fics all the time

I haven't read long form SC fic in a while - though I do enjoy some of the drabbles and tumblr fic I see on my dash - and at this point in our fandom's history it seems to be mostly AUs and canon divergent stories, which is understandable.

For Vigil, which is a much smaller fandom, I find it interesting that fanfic Poppy acts up and out a lot more than she ever did on the show, but this may be a byproduct of wanting to introduce some family conflict into the stories.

15. topic that brings up the most rancid discourse

For CWSG: besides the whole SDCC debacle? Eeek, flashbacks. The discourse around James/Lena and William/Kara was horrid, and large parts of it unrepentantly, unexaminedly racist. I think fandoms as a whole - including wlw fandoms - have a long way to go when it comes to having honest discussions about racism in our spaces. And there weren't many of us talking about it at the time that it was happening, either.

Last movie: The second spiderverse movie. It was too fast for me, but it seemed cool. Good vibes. I do enjoy animation and stylized cg over live action, so I am glad these movies are doing so well, but I think this is it for me on watching any more.

Currently watching: Just finished binge watching The Good Place. An extremely solid show. Well rounded, funny, great acting. Cathartic ending. Cried about it a lot thinking of the message it's trying to convey. Eleanor and Michael were my favorites, but that's no surprise that I like the Arizona trashbag and the fire squid demon in a Ted Dansen suit.

Currently reading: Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, by Pu Songling. And as always, Modao Zushi every time I have to check something for my donghua rewatch. And slowly catching up with The road to reunion by Onomatopoetikon (prequel movie xmen ff)

Currently working on: Still in the process of my Extensive Note Taking rewatch of the Founder of Diabolism (mdzs) donghua. I am mostly done with notes up to s2, but I binged s3 again because I wanted to write instead of take notes (WIP doc available on the CX Heaven discord). s3 continues to make me so angry I am not sure how I'll convince myself to do the full note taking. Comparing each episode to relevant novel sections is also emotionally taxing, in the sheer damage that the donghua does to the Twin Heroes relationship... so! This will be a while... but this an underlying project for my fem-mxy!wwx fic which ... may... take the place of "mainfic" for ever getting published? Jury is still out on that.

Current obsession: MDZS themed brainrot continues to make a marshy bog of my psyche. Chengxian, Twin Heroes, and Jiang Cheng in that order, but surprisingly I seem to be writing and thinking more about WWX in all my WIPs and I just noticed? Predominately, I have been writing these stories from his perspective 😅 Zoids au, naga!jc au, majority of fem!mxy au, jc wolfcurse post-canon, White Hair Wuxian smutty oneshot... Maybe it's just easier to write him because the novel is a baseline but also I think I understand and respect his multiverse shidivision.

supercorp fans wildin out seems like a new normal these days. 2 sad women who eventually kiss seem like the entire canon plot of supergirl, isn't it? i think the face we make trying to figure out the characters positions in whatever they're doing is WORST. no worries and no rush, i've just been jumping from one sc fic to another (somehow it makes me feel dirty & no human should consume this much fics but oh well) and ive recently discovered the joy of agent reign. oh, do you have any other ships on supergirl besides sc?

1. What sort of content do you create, and what is the thing you’ve made that you’re most proud of?

Proudest fic - There are a few I tend to choose from, but right now it's Even Though You're Kryptonian

2. What fandom(s) do you create for?

Supercorp. (And a very tiny amount of Dansen and soon Rojarias.)

3. What is your current favourite ship (or brotp if you prefer), and how controversial is it?

Supercorp!! I don't think it's a controversial ship, lol.

4. For your answer to question 3, are they canon?

They are to me 😌

5. What was your first fandom, and how old were you?

My first obsession (and still greatest love) was Xena. I started watching the show a few episodes into season 1, when I was 6 years old. It was very formative.

That said, I didn't really get involved in any fandom communities until Supercorp (in early 2022).

6. What is your most unhinged fandom creation to date?

I don't think I get super unhinged, but as a pilot I did like creating this dumb incorrect quote.

7. Do you remember what started you off creating fandom content, and if so, what was it?

I was getting frustrated at not being able to find certain types of fics, and it struck me that... I was allowed to write my own.

8. Do you let people you know in real life see your fandom creations?

Yup! My partner read my first two fics in support, and several of my IRL friends have read at least one of my fics because I didn't have the good sense to keep that information to myself when I was getting started. It's mortifying lol. But my friends are very cool people.

9. How do you feel about fanworks of fanworks? Has anyone ever made something based on a thing you made?

Fanworks of fanworks are amazing!!! I've been incredibly lucky to have that happen three times (post), and gotten asked for permission for a different continuation and a podfic that may eventually happen.

10. What feeling do you most often try to evoke with your creations?

Angst. Longing. Bits of compassion too.

11. Has someone ever paid your work a compliment (in any form) that has stuck with you, and what was it?

I love each and every one of my commenters ❤️

Honestly, the compliments that stick with me most are "I came back to reread this" or "this idea is still living rent-free in my head" type comments. I think that's what all writers and artists want - to feel that their art lasted in someone's mind beyond the first time seeing it.

12. What’s your favourite thing someone else has made that you’ve seen in the last 24 hours (and link it if you can find it again!)

Technically it was more than 24hrs ago but this art by @awaitingrain is so fucking cute!!

13. Give a small sneak preview of something you’re working on right now (eg a couple of sentences of fic from a WIP, a gif set theme, a small piece of a larger picture, whatever you feel happy to share)

I have a ficlet (that's getting out of control), here's a snippet:

Lena was cozying into the warmth of Kara’s body, when Lena spoke. “I’m thinking of visiting my mother’s house soon,” she said shyly. “I want to find out more about her. Where I came from.”

Some of my comments are very simple, some of my comments are very long. I've tried to get more consistent about commenting ever since starting to write, because I know how important it is. Unfortunately, I also read a lot less now that I'm writing more.

16. How many works in progress do you currently have? Will you finish them all?

I have 5 WIPs! I'm very confident I'll finish them all.

17. what’s the longest it’s ever taken you to finish a fandom project?

I guess my worldkiller Kara fic took a bit over 3 months, though part of that was spacing with the Supercorp Big Bang.

I tend to write fast. One of the things I'm actually trying to do is slow down to fill out the story a bit more.

18. Describe the thing you made most recently in a way that is technically true, but also completely misleading. Link the thing if it’s published!

Lena has a bad day in the lab (Clockwork).

19. Do you ever engage with fanworks for a fandom you’re not in? Which one(s) and how did you get into it?

I totally engage in fanart from other fandoms that cross my dashboard, particularly korrasami. I don't tend to read fanfic of stuff I haven't engaged in, though.

This fanvid is probably my favorite in the entire fandom.
