WEEK 12 WORK
“WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?” by Daozhen Yang. 2019.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This work is a painting. I painted a lot of eyes on a piece of white paper, and then wrote three sentences in Chinese on these eyes. These sentences all expressed a meaning, "What are you looking at?" In China, we have to consider other people's opinions, just like these eyes, even if we paint different makeup, use different eyes, do different actions, or someone will stare at us and ask, "Are you right? "So I think the best way to fight these people is to ask them "what are you looking at?" We just have to be ourselves and become what we want to be the most, without thinking about what others think. Not everyone can understand us, but as long as we become stronger and become blind to others, we have a greater chance to be the truest oiurselves.

WEEK 12 ARTIST RESEARCH
Tumblr media
Coca Cola by Ai Weiwei. (1993)
This work is based on traditional Chinese ceramic art and has the Coca-Cola trademark added to it. This art reflects the blending of Chinese and Western cultures, and it also reflects the irony of Chinese feudal politics. This artist is a famous Chinese political artist. From his works, he can see the dissatisfaction and irony of Chinese politics, as well as the yearning for freedom and openness. My work is also discussing the liberation of freedom of thought, just like this artist.

WEEK 11 WORK
“WHAT IS LIFE” by Daozhen Yang. 2019.
video link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOa0B0S0-eU
Tumblr media
I made a doll with wire and rope, representing the people living in this world, and then I continued to paint different colors of oil on the doll, and recorded the whole process with a camera. In the final work, I changed the order of the videos to reverse. Our lives are full of all kinds of difficulties and troubles. These things will affect us and even change us. Just like pigments change the color of dolls, once they are changed, it is very difficult to return to the past. The reason why the order of video playback changes is because I want to express that no matter how difficult life is, how much torture we bring us, we should all know what kind of people we are at the beginning, strengthen our initial heart, and insist on being ourselves.

WEEK 11 ARTIST RESEARCH
Tumblr media
Yayoi Kusama (2016)
Yayoi, her works are meaningless to the average person, and they are disorganized, but in fact, the inner world of the artist can be seen in her works. Most of her works are composed of simple monotonous patterns, and most people may not understand the meaning. In fact, these artworks are expressing the artist's own life and his own views on life, monotonous but not boring. My work is also expressing my inner world with these seemingly meaningless and related things, and the way the artist expresses meaning is the same.

WEEK 10 WORK
“HOW MANY FACES” by Daozhen Yang. 2019.
video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fV_IYTGZQuE
Tumblr media
This work is a video. I used three makeups to express the three people hidden in my heart, and in the middle of the video I interspersed with the way I didn't have makeup (people want me to look) to express my life. I need to switch between different faces. I love makeup for a long time, but I am a boy, so I can't wear a very strong makeup in my life, otherwise I will be ridiculed by others. I think this is very wrong, because being yourself is the right of each of us. The meaning of this work is to let people know how difficult it is to be yourself and how important it is. We can't always hide the true self, but because the world is too terrible, we can only hide the true self and cover up the original one with another face.

WEEK 10 ARTIST RESEARCH.
“FAMILY” by Xiaogang Zhang. 1996.
Zhang is a famous Chinese artist. His works are famous throughout the country for their hidden but profound significance. In this work, the look of the family is very similar, but each person's face is painted with different colors to represent the real thoughts of each person is different. This work can also be understood as a satire on the political strategy of the country at that time, because the government's extreme control over the people's thoughts led to many people being brainwashed and even mentally disordered. Different colors can also be understood as different people's brainwashing under politics. The result produced. My work also uses different facial images to show different personalities and different ideas in each person's mind, and this work uses the same expression.

WEEK 9 GALLERY TASK.
“EMOTION” by Daozhen Yang. 2019.
This work is a video shown on TV. Hang a small TV on the blank wall and loop the video for about three minutes. The entire video is silent, so I didn't add any audio equipment. The reason why I chose TV is because I hope that when my work is exhibited, the audience can feel some breath of life, just like watching TV at home, very casual and willing to spend time to stop and enjoy.

WEEK 9 ARTIST RESEARCH.
“The Doll Face” by Andrew Thomas Huang. 2007
Video link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnxjEyEAHYQ
Huang is a very famous filmmaker. In this work, a robot is trying to become a human being and eventually destroys itself. The artist uses his professional filmmaking skills to make the whole work very realistic and appealing. This work is a good expression of our yearning for the unknown world, but if we do not accept who we actually are, we will destroy ourselves in the end. Like my work, we would rather be wronged than to be criticized by the world, but in this way, we will lose our own nature and become a living dead without soul.

WEEK 9 WORK.
“Emotion” by Daozhen Yang. 2019.
Video link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEUSH1Etprk&feature=youtu.be
This work is a video of about three minutes. The video showed me in two forms, one is me wearing heavy makeup, the other is me without makeup. I was very happy in the video, because I am very fascinated by my own makeup, but without makeup, my expression is very calm, and even a little sad (you can see sad emotions from the tears in your eyes). I changed the speed of different parts of the video. When the expression is happy, the speed of the video is very fast, but when the expression is calm, the speed of the video is very slow. I want to express that "I am very happy with makeup, but happy time is always short, only calm and pain is permanent." I want people to think, if happiness is short, how should we choose.

WEEK 8 WORK.
“Paradise ” by Daozhen Yang. 2019.
This work is a photographic work, I paint a very heavy makeup on my face, squatting in a narrow space filled with discarded newspapers, happily making a variety of expressions. In my mind, my most beautiful look is wearing a heavy makeup and apply my favorite color to my face. However, I can't be accepted by others, so I chose to hide in a narrow corner, but even though I am in such a dirty and narrow space, as long as I dress up what I like, I will be very happy,  that is why my expression is so happy. Many times, there are no ways in which we can be accepted by the society, but we should not doubt ourselves. Even if we are under the pressure from the world, we still should smile in our own paradise. I used newspapers and shower room to create a narrow, crowded space to express the harshness of my environment. But I didn't change myself because of the environment, and still be myself in this environment happily.

WEEK 8 ARTIST RESEARCH.
“Up to and Including Her Limits” by Carolee Schneemann. (1971-1976)
In Carolee's work, I often see the human body that is extremely embarrassed, and these abnormal human bodies are the materials of the artwork. This artist is expressing beauty with ugly things, and my work uses ugly things to convey emotions to people. At this point, our works have something in common. Using the human body as a material to create is a very favorite way. I think that people can feel the strongest feelings and express the most intuitive feelings. I hope that my audience can get the most out of my work and the emotions I have brought to them.

WEEK 7 WORK.
“Watch Me” by Daozhen Yang. 2019.
Video Link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W0gu9cwoh8&feature=youtu.be
I use video to record a lot of things that people often overlook in their lives, such as street signs, street lights, and discarded soda bottles. I think these things have a very strong sense of loneliness. If they can talk, they will yell "I am here", so I added background music to the whole video, which is my own recording. In the recording, I keep repeating “I am here”, and the change of tone is also very obvious. From the beginning of the expectation, to the anger afterwards, to the final disappointment, it reflects the psychological changes that people are neglecting. . I hope that through this work, people will pay attention to things and people that we usually don't care about. Maybe they are very eager to be concerned, and they are also worthy of attention.

WEEK 7 ARTIST RESEARCH.
“WU ZEI” by Wang Yong-ping. 2014.
In this work, the artist created a huge octopus and placed it in a huge room. The entire house has only this piece of art, which can be said to be filled with this octopus. Although the room and the octopus are large, they feel a deep sense of loneliness. The artist wants to express loneliness through this work and let people feel the definition of loneliness. My work also expresses loneliness through something that is not noticed in life, and coincides with the way in which this work expresses meaning.

WEEK 6 WORK.
“Do You Really Think?” by Daozhen Yang. 2019.
Video Link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwNw2rKaIE4&feature=youtu.be
In this video, I was forced to eat a lot of cereals by one hand. Although I tried my best to resist, I still couldn't stop this hand. In fact, I did not really eat a lot of cereal, but the rough behavior of this hand caused me damage. I added background music to this work. It was a piece of my own recording. In this passage, I kept asking "Do you really think so?" and listed a lot of things that were forced to do from small to large. I want to express through this work that parents always think that they think good things, children must accept, never ask the child's feelings, just like the cereal in the video, although nutrition, but I do not accept . Continue to force the children to accept something, even though the original intention is for the child, but in the end it will cause harm to the child.

WEEK 6 ARTIST RESEARCH,
“Cut Piece” by Yoko Ono. (1964)
In the Yoko’s work, especially the performing arts, I found that she particularly likes to use the elements of violence. The damage to the body and the destruction of perfect things are the elements that she often uses. My work also expresses meaning with ugly, imperfect things, which is the inspiration she gave me.

WEEK 5 WORK. “INJURY AND SELF-REPAIR” by Daozhen Yang. 2019.
Video Link: https://vimeo.com/358048407
I used makeup to express two ways of hurting my eyes and tried to fix them. The red makeup represents a minor injury that still leaves marks after self-healing. The black makeup is based on the red, and more serious damage, leaving a more serious trace after self-healing. The significance of this work is to let people think about the role we play, whether it is the eyes or the color.

WEEK 5 ARTIST RESEARCH.
“ Be Nice To Me.” by Pipilotti Rist. 2000.
In this work, we can see that the artist is wearing a heavy makeup and rubbing her face on a transparent glass, slowly destroying the makeup on her face. But the whole video is played backwards, which means that we will see the ruined makeup at the beginning. As the video goes on, we will gradually find out Pipilotti with the complete makeup look. The meaning of this work is to present feminism, because many women's makeup is not only to make themselves look good, but also a way to show respect to other people. But many men think that women's makeup is actually to please men, which the artist thinks is a very wrong idea, so she frantically destroyed her makeup in front of the camera, and used the way of playing backwards to express that women have the right of deciding wear makeup or not, and what kind of makeup they should wear.
