hello, it is the other side of the coin here: the person who just likes (really likes) to study (a particular section) of history.
my brain isn't structured in a way that can handle higher academia very well, which is why my thoughts will forever remain opinions and not facts until other people, who actually work in the field, put out research that validates them. i still attend conferences, all via zoom these days, though i would trek out to toronto when there was a particularly interesting one (~3h bus ride away), lo in those distant days before the plague. i do, however, have a vast amount of knowledge on very specific topics, and that is because i have the books and the journal articles.
i can walk away whenever i want to. i don't have to limit my focus to a specific area. i can say i study bronze age crete. i do not contribute to the discipline, unless it's through discussion at a conference that happens to influence others' thoughts. i have been asked why i would like access to certain research, and told that i would not be getting that access due to my lack of actual academic credentials, which is completely understandable.
i don't get paid for any time i put into this. in fact, i pay to do this. aegaeum volumes are usually anywhere between 100 - 350 USD$ last i checked, and i have more than two. i have travelled to crete, to archaeology sites, to museums. i could give you a very in-depth tour of several different ones. but i'm not going to be the person at the museum who's responsible for one of those little 'exhibit xyz is not available due to current research'.
What's a difference between historians people who just like to study history?
idk maybe the fulltime yearslong professional training by other professionals and constant peer review aka quality control? what's the difference between a five star chef and someone who makes homemade meals every day.
#just the thought of the social aspects of academia gives me the heaves#pick a career MOST opposed to audhd and it's academia (tho people would do the 'but it's ur special interest' no. no. nope).

Jedi Master Lene Kostana
I’ll admit, the format of Dooku: Jedi Lost was really hard for me to engage with. Because it reads like a script, it felt to me like all the characters were going 😐 at each other the whole time. I know I probably should have listened to it to get the full effect, but I have a really hard time locking in for audiobooks, even if it’s a whole production ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it’s one of my flaws. But anyway! Lene is so fascinating to me because she really is cut from the same disaster cloth as Yoda’s lineage. Almost every decision she made had me going “why would you do that” or “thats just going to make things worse” but we really do love to watch someone who’s technically not wrong about the fate of the galaxy continuously make questionable choices that harm the ones they care for and undermine their reputation with the Council. It’s an age-old tradition.
Here’s my headcanons for her -
- After getting to know Thame Cerulian through their shared interest in the Sith, she initially viewed him as an irritating, pseudo-intellectual bother. His belief that the Sith could return comes more from a place of (by her estimation) frivolous academic conjecture rather than actionable concern. However, when he’s offered a seat on the High Council, she realizes it could be advantageous to involve him in her research. He is incredibly knowledgeable, and as long as she puts up with him, he can intercept most of the prying questions from the Council. (To be clear, I don’t ship these two - Thame likes guys)
- She watches as Dooku, Sifo, and Jocasta all develop a big stupid crush on each other and goes out of her way to foster whatever that is. She does this largely because she thinks it’s cute, but also to confuse Thame and spite Yoda. Thame isn’t sure why these boys are always hanging out in his apartment, but he doesn’t really mind. Yoda knows exactly what’s going on, but is frankly relieved Dooku even has friends.
- While training Sifo, she quickly learns her words carry a lot of weight and anything she says could potentially end up being extremely impactful to her apprentice. This is advantageous most of the time - Sifo only needs to be told something once for the lesson to stick, and it warms her heart to see him basking in her praise, even over something small. The downside? Lene is horribly foul-mouthed, and Sifo is a sponge.
In terms of visual references, there’s obviously not much to go on. The book basically says she’s purple, she’s got a shaved head, and she has a curl of hair behind her right ear… The lil baby version of her in that one comic I haven’t read at least shows what the species looks like. @ junchan_nyan_art has a couple gorgeous drawings of younger Lene on insta, and @bolithesenate more or less captured how she looks in my mind! idk what the curl of hair behind her left ear is supposed to mean or look like. So I’m giving her a sick faux hawk. idc. I was pretty much happy with her design right off the bat, it just took a few drawings to really nail her features. What do we think, is this something?? I feel so late to the party. She’s been on my to draw list foreverrrrr but I just wasn’t getting around to reading the source material 💀 we’re really in serious blorbo territory now, this ain’t an entry level Star Wars blog anymore, if it ever was

dooku: *thinks he is being very patient about this whole thing* also dooku: *thousand yard stare at grammar being corrected*
He crouched down as Araithana came to a stop by a collection of tables littering the sidewalk, spillover from the restaurant behind them. “This is not working,” he said. They shook their head, pale hair whipping against their cheeks. After a moment, Dooku reached out with the Force to arrest the momentum as it didn't seem to be stopping on its own. He didn't push back, only created a solidity in the air as a stop. He watched his charge press their face into it. Unsustainable, they agreed. “Can I carry you instead?” Araithana tipped their head away from the pressure Dooku had created in the Force. The skin beneath their left eye crinkled, like they were moving the muscle in the bottom lid alone. It was a very small tell, and Dooku braced himself for whatever it was a tell for. They shrugged expansively, arms going out to the side with palms facing upward. An expression of unknowing that used their entire body. They didn't even have to put it into words or even that sound that, somehow, signified that the maker didn't know. “Can you?” There was an emphasis on the first word. Dooku stared past his charge for a moment. There had better be some answers waiting when they arrived at the Jedi Temple, because Dooku was coming to realise that, even for a Jedi child, this one was very odd. A philosopher had once said that no Jedi was ever truly a child, not with the whole of the Force available to them. Dooku was inclined to agree with this; he had never truly felt whatever idylls of childhood were agreed upon to exist. Jedi lived to serve. They were taught this at a very young age, the purpose to which they were to put their ability to use the Force. At any rate, any childhood Dooku felt he might have had was drastically reoriented from the revelations on Serenno those many decades ago. Dooku corrected his question like an etiquette teacher was watching him. “May I?”

i'm very tickled by the suggestion that the reason menelaus went largely untouched by the tantalid family curse was because his marriage to helen, a daughter of zeus, acted as a kind of inoculation

my favorite thing about navigating fanfiction is finding a really good one and being all “oh boy this was good, I hope they have more!” and literally every other story they’ve ever written was for like Miami Vice

Was just informed that "any sufficiently deep enthusiasm is indistinguishable from academic rigor" and hoo boy we are really in a crisis of anti-intellectualism.
