There's a persistent influence in the tabletop gaming sphere that, if I was being cheeky, I would call 'Dungeons & Dragons socialized.' I'm not immune to this, unfortunately, it's sometimes easier to tell my friends I have a D&D game than say Pathfinder, Mutants & Masterminds, Lancer, Deadlands, whatever.

But what really made me notice this was reading over Shadowrun (3rd edition) and hitting an optional thing for magicians. If you're about to lose some of your Magic stat, like you got nine shades of shit kicked out of you or you installed some cyberware, you can take a geas to offset it. A geas is a restriction that you need to fulfill, like never eating the flesh of dogs, or only casting spells in the forest. If you fulfill this geas, you can cast as if you still had the point of Magic you lost, which is a big thing because your stats affect how many dice you roll, and numbers are like, 6 to 10 at the highest. If the geas is broken, you don't have that point of Magic for 24 hours.

Anyway, two of the geasa are Gestures and Incantations, where you need to, you know, gesture and incant to cast your spells. And I had to sit and realize how full of D&D my brain was that I didn't realize those could be optional.
