Oppositional sexism is a very useful term actually. Like, so much is better explained by the idea of “there’s a societal belief that men and women should remain opposites and should have no overlapping traits” than “this is homophobia/transphobia”. Why does society hate displays of femininity in men and masculinity in women? It’s oppositional sexism. They hate that you’re proof that masculinity and femininity aren’t inherently opposites. I’ve curated my tumblr following so much that I hadn’t seen any anti-annabeth posts and thought people were overreacting. Then I was caught unawares by a post calling her selfish and controlling and wow people are delusional.

I know people throw around the term media illiteracy a little too much but I genuinely can’t see how people can love the books and Percy’s character so much and not see how central Annabeth is to the themes of the story and Percy’s arc.

Some people are really blinded by misogyny and the misguided belief that "critical thinking" means being critical of a thing or person. And I stand by that a good bit of the rise in Annabeth hate is also misogynoir.

But you can tell the Annabeth haters are grasping for straws because all of their evidence is either:

a misremembering or misrepresentation of the text. I've seen people outright invent quotes or misquote things she did or said.

pointing out what are obviously flaws (i.e her treatment of Rachel in BotL), and acting like the text rewarded those flaws or that no one sees those flaws. But they are missing that the text frames them as obvious character flaws, and they are the missing the fact that people like Annabeth for her character flaws.

a complete and total failure to recognize both flirting and figurative language. For the last time, Percy isn't constantly afraid she's going to hit him. I love it when women tell me they just finalized their divorce. ESPECIALLY older women. The correct response is always “congratulations” and they always seem so pleasantly surprised, they just seem to light right up and talk about how happy they are, what their plans are, how well they’re doing. I’ve only ever met like 1 person who was upset to be divorced and it was a middle-aged dude. Second most exciting is young men. A 25 year old guy says he just got divorced and you go “congratulations” and he SMILES? You KNOW there’s a story. I love it. People should get divorced more
