Do you ever feel imposter syndrome or anxious creating? how do you deal with it?

I enjoy creating, it does make me happy but I can’t shake the anxiety that comes with being a creative and feeling like my projects aren’t up to par. It gets overwhelming and I become discouraged :/

You fight it with joy. The joy of creation, the joy of seeing something completed it, the joy of reaching even one person. You have to be doing it for you, for self-sustaining reasons. Because you like improving, you like growth, you like the challenge.

Because it won't ever go away, I think. If you take pride in what you do and feel it is worthy of recognition, you will naturally look around and compare. You'll wonder what is missing, or why someone might not like your thing as much as another. It is natural to compete, if not outwardly, then inward.

But when your foundation and motivation are strong, you can process this into fuel rather than negativity that will wear you down. Even then, it takes time and practice facing that fear. Fear of failure, rejection, ridicule. But it can be beaten. I used to get anxious before every upload. It took years. It's still not perfect, but it is easier today than it was years ago.

If you can frame the transaction of creation as a net positive, like exercising a muscle, it can alleviate some of that strife. By doing the thing you have already accomplished your task. You took another step towards getting better, finishing your story, etc.

And even when it still can suck after doing all of that, you'll go to bed, wake up, and feel a little better. It won't last. It'll be okay. You aren't in constant competition or scrutiny. You're allowed to put the magnifying glass away and stop being so critical. The time for self-assessment isn't when you're at your most vulnerable.

Hope this helps! Don't be discouraged. Find comfort in knowing that everyone feels this way. Sometimes, it's a relief knowing you're not unique in that regard.

AO3 Comments are SO SO SOOOOOOO important because you can only leave Kudos ONCE. You add to the hit count ONCE (every 24 hours).

So whenever someone updates their fic, the ONLY way an author knows who their regular readers are is if they comment on each chapter. And we WANT to know who's still reading.

Believe it or not, some of us think about the name that pops up constantly in the comments and go "omg I can't wait to see what they think of THIS SPECIFIC SCENE cuz I KNOW they'll say something about it!!!"
