More painting experimenting. 🎨

With this one I tried to preserve the lineart more compared to last weeks post because I like my thick lineart. However, sometimes it feels like my lineart is not part of the painting, so my goal was to make the painting a little more cohesive.

I also realized that I hadn't drawn Zelda this year, so I absolutely had to make up for it!🌻

I also resolved to pay a little more attention to the Shrine of Resurrection Link first wakes up in after seeing this video. Here are some things I noticed about its aesthetic.

The “surgery light” above Link’s head has a bunch of little constellations on it.

The whole place is hella dusty and completely quiet. It feels a lot more like a tomb than the Sanctuary where Ganon was growing his own body, which felt like a body cavity due to the pulsations of the veins. Everything is still and silent in Link’s room. Even if Link himself is alive, it feels like he formed within the “heart” of an organism long dead, or maybe never alive to begin with.

There are a bunch of rotted old boxes of wood and supplies right outside of the door where Link finds his first set of clothes. Was somebody keeping watch for a while, or was Link expected to wake up much earlier?

The shrine itself is right next to the source of “The River of the Dead” on the map.

It’s very interesting, the contrast between the Shrine and the Sanctuary. Link’s resurrection was marked with stillness, silence, and proximity to death. Ganon’s resurrection was more like a living parasitic organism trying to form a brood sac in a place where it shouldn’t be. And the site of Ganon’s resurrection was always moving, like “Life, Life, Life, Alive, I want to be alive.” Whereas Link himself didn’t really want anything. In fact, his resurrection was Zelda’s wish, not his own, and he woke up as an almost completely blank slate (although not so blank as time went on, it’s debatable as to whether he can be considered the exact same person despite accessing his past self’s memories, because even if everything worked out in the end, experiences like what he went through tend to change you, man).

It reminds me a little of the contrast between the Heart and Winter aspects in Cultist Simulator, with the two being presented often as polar opposites, with Heart being “life” (or, at least, life’s perpetuation) while Winter is “death,” or the cessation of life, motion, and sound.

I noticed today that when Link goes into the Fire Sanctuary, you can visibly see how tired he is.

Usually when he enters a dungeon he makes this face, getting a bit more intense with each new dungeon he encounters:

But by the time he gets to the sixth one, the Fire Sanctuary, he does this.

Oh, my poor bean.

He is just so, so tired and you can see it in his face, how he closes his eyes and takes a deep breath and physically has to prepare himself. He's exhausted. He doesn't want to go through another dungeon, another boss fight, another thing that will keep him from Zelda. But he knows he has to.

So he takes a moment, allows himself a single deep sigh, and then gets to work. especially after having just received heaping verbal abuse from Scrapper; Link's mental state must be devastating right then
