Hi I'm Shibs! This is a sideblog for my Darkest Dungeon fanarts (90% Dismas) and reference compilations!
Don't wanna be here? Send us removal request.
Note
Do you per change have the Peasant Militia's models rendered per chance? I can't find any of them by themselves, much less in their idle or attack animations.
Sorry, last time I rendered DD2 models was many many updates ago! I haven't even tried the new kingdoms mode yet, even though it's free. I just lost interest in anything DD2 related y'know?
My best recommendation for you is to check the official wiki every now and then, the one on wiki.gg (NOT fandom) that's the one fans are still updating! Or maybe try to extract the models and put them on blender, there's this guide made by the person who was making the wiki.gg DD2 renders.
Best of luck to you!

Looking through my DD official art folder and I still like this Dismas very much <3 I don't think many people have seen this one, so I'm sharing it here! It's an art trade/crossover between Darkest Dungeon and Monster Prom (their end of the art trade in this link here).

Where was anything said about favorite foods for the characters :0?
It was in a very old AMA, but I guess I misremembered it-- it didn't ask what were their favorite food but rather what would each hero have for lunch! And here I was all these years thinking Dismas' favorite food was ham sandwich...
#darnest answers#darkest dungeon#chris bourassa just types whatever comes to mind sometimes doesn't he?

Thought of sharing the most important information from today's AMA with Red Hook: Reynauld and Dismas share the same birthday on December 25th! Mark your calendars!!
(other comments about the AMA under read more)
I'm glad I wasn't the only one asking about their big upcoming project-- the one that got Behaviour interested enough to buy the studio. I was wondering if it would be darkest dungeon related or something entirely new, but from the answers we got today it's clearly darkest dungeon related!
From previous interviews, we know this is a pretty big and ambitious game, something they couldn't do without the backing from a bigger company.
I cannot say I'm exactly hyped (the bigger the hype, the bigger the disappointment) but I'm curious to see what comes out of this, cause I'm totally clueless.
Another observation, it seems like they are pretty focused on finishing the Kingdoms free dlc and the Abomination paid dlc, and after that they intend to maintain support for dd2 like patches, mod support and so on. But when talking about adding further heroes or content, they always seem to add a big "if", as in, "as long as the dlcs sell well, we might consider making more".
I guess they want to know if it's even worth adding more heroes to dd2-- they've answered it's pretty time consuming to create a new hero, it takes months of work, not to mention the shrines, paths and so on. I just thought this was interesting wording, "as long as", to me this hints they want to jump on the new project as soon as possible.
They've answered other stuff in the ask me anything, but these caught my attention the most. Do check the rest of it in r/games if you're curious! And don't forget to wish Dismas and Reynauld a happy birthday on December 25th <3
#darkest dungeon#darkest dungeon 2#I wish bourassa gave us a full list of the birthdays though like when he answered the fav foods#btw I'm not the user who asked the question if that wasn't clear lol

In the game files there’s a script the devs used during development, it spawns one of each hero, all with their predetermined names (including the name for Houndmaster’s dog). This is the source for the canon names, though I’m not sure if everyone who knows the names is also aware about this bit of trivia.
To find the script, you need to go to where the game got installed on your computer, on pcs it's usually: C:\Programs\Steam\steamapps\common\DarkestDungeon
Then you can look into the 'scripts' folder, there's a file called 'starting_roster.darkest'. It should open on the notepad, you'll find all the canon character's names except for the paid dlc ones.
For the dlc names, assuming you have the dlcs, follow this way and look for the same darkest file as mentioned above: C:\Programs\Steam\steamapps\common\DarkestDungeon\dlc\702540_shieldbreaker\scripts
Oddly enough, there’s only the name of the Flagellant in that file, with Shieldbreaker being called just Shieldbreaker. But we know her name is Amani because that’s the name displayed on the screenshots of her dlc steam page!
Here’s the content of the file– I have no idea why Antiquarian is mentioned twice though.
hero: .class shieldbreaker .name Shieldbreaker hero: .class man_at_arms .name Barristan hero: .class crusader .name Reynauld hero: .class highwayman .name Dismas hero: .class plague_doctor .name Paracelsus hero: .class vestal .name Junia hero: .class hellion .name Boudica hero: .class grave_robber .name Audrey hero: .class occultist .name Alhazred hero: .class leper .name Baldwin hero: .class bounty_hunter .name Tardif hero: .class jester .name Sarmenti hero: .class houndmaster .name Willam & Fergus hero: .class flagellant .name Damian hero: .class abomination .name Bigby hero: .class antiquarian .name Josephine hero: .class musketeer .name Margaret hero: .class arbalest .name Missandei hero: .class antiquarian .name Josephine
As a final piece of trivia, these canon names are unique and cannot be spawned in regular heroes that you get in the stage coach (with the exception of Tardif, which is a dev’s name alongside the canon Bounty Hunter’s name). You can find the other regular random names in the ‘names.string_table.xml’ file inside the ‘localization’ folder.
So like, we all know the default/official names of the characters from Darkest Dungeon, but...where did they actually come from? Their names are all listed on the wiki pages for each character, but no source is cited for ANY of them. When, where, and how did we learn the characters' names??!

Will you add the duelist refs to your Google drives? (I'm doodlng her how so I'm curious
Hi, I've answered about this more in depth before but basically, I don't own the Binding Blade DLC so I cannot do it. Same goes for Abomination once Inhuman Bondage DLC comes out, I won't be buying anything DD2 related for both loss of interest and price reasons. I'm sorry I can't be of much help, good luck with your drawing though!

Academic reference sheet, under the keep reading there's another reference sheet from when he still had a nose (featuring spoilers for up to the fourth confession)!
Tumblr makes the pics look bad in the preview but just click on them and save and it's all good!
Here's also another version that turned out too big and also had the stabbing spoiler, so it didn't make the cut for main post image:

im curious, is there any way to rip the "cutscene" assets from dd2? (by "cutscene" i mean the art that gets shown before and after every chapter)
im trying to get as many reference images of the academic as i can and im stuck on that :[
Hi there! I do remember seeing the Denial intro and outro pngs in my first batch of exported assets, unfortunately I deleted that first export-- I thought I should replace it with a more complete export, but thanks to some errors in the software, many many things didn't get exported, such as the pngs for the chapters intros and outros.
However, your ask made me look for an alternative for AS (AssetStudioGUI), because I knew it was possible to rip those pngs, I’ve done it before Unity updated and broke AS. AS hasn’t been updated in over two years BUT I just found out today there are many forks on the GitHub page, and one of them updated the code so now it works with the most recent version of Unity (the software DD2 was made and runs on)!
https://github.com/zhangjiequan/AssetStudio/releases/tag/v0.16.53
If you’re interested, this is the fork I used, it worked without a hitch, just like how AS originally used to! Super excited about this cause it means I’ll be able to rip assets from other unity based games once again! As a thanks for this ask pushing me to find out about this, I’m putting together an Academic reference sheet! I'll post in a different post :)

Hi! Do you think you will update a sprite or alike on Crusader from DD2? Thank you so much!
Hi hi, sorry for the late reply! I answered a bit in depth about making dd2 refs in the previous ask, the resumed answer is that I’m not in the mood for making dd2 renders anymore. But unlike with dd2 enemies, I guess I could see myself making refs for Crusader and Duelist if I ever get that drive and motivation again.
Problem (besides me not really wanting to do it) is that I don’t own the Blinding Blade dlc so I don’t even have access to the files. If I were to eventually buy it, I’d try to grab dd2 + dlcs on a huge steam sale, because of mod support (I currently only own the base game on Epic Game Store).
Just as a psa, the devs did mention mods will work on the EGS version too but extra steps will have to be taken to use them, as explained here. It’s apparently not much work, but I’m still unsure how one would download the mods from the steam workshop without owning the game? I guess if the modders made the mod available elsewhere this could work, but what if they don’t?
While we’re in this subject, I was just browsing dd2’s steam workshop and this reskin mod made me so content! It’s just some skins picked from the first game, but I liked seeing the darker skin tones back– my first Vestal had been the dark skinned one, so I saw her as the ‘canon’ one for a good while. Also, green HWM is forever dear to me thanks to wyrd’s oc, beau <3
But yeah, mods alone are not enough for me to give dd2 another try. I’m waiting for the kingdoms update to see if I like the new gameplay style better, maybe if that's the case I'll find myself motivated to make more dd2 refs? I dunno, we'll see.
(Sorry to derail in lots of tangents after answering the ask lol)

Hello! Hope it's not a bother, but would it be possible to get 3D renders of the enemies from DD2? I know the devs made a Google folder of posed renders but I'd love some proper image reference of them all considering how detailed their models are.
No pressure! Thanks for reading.
Hi there, sorry for the late reply! If you don’t mind, could you share the link to this folder of posed references you mentioned? I feel like this would be helpful for those who never heard of it! I’m not sure if this is something the devs shared on the dd discord, I’ve left the server months ago after one too many bad moderation incidents– which didn’t even involve me, I just lurked and felt bad watching it all.
About your request, I’m afraid I won’t be able to do it– someone else had already asked for dd2 enemy refs two years ago and my answer was the same, there are just way too many models. On the wiki, I just counted 74 enemies (including variations like knight/fallen templar) and bosses (end of confession + warlord), and there will still be more added on the upcoming kingdoms free dlc.
This is just way too many for just one person to handle, it already took ages to render all the 12 heroes available at the time, the enemies would take even longer due to their drastically different sizes, I’d have to adjust the camera position and keyframes for each of them every time, slowing down even more the already slow rendering process, not to mention the effort of setting up the models in blender with their 2 textures (base color and shadows/lineart).
Another complicating factor: extracting the game assets have become unreliable lately due to some backend changes in Unity, the software dd2 was made in, which messed up a bit AssetStudioGui, the software I had been using to extract assets. For instance, I recently tried to get assets from another game made in Unity (The Pale Beyond) and kept getting errors through the extraction process, in the end there were a lot of missing assets, I had to edit a couple myself to put them in the game’s wiki. This is a great game btw but I cannot rec it much due to how miserable the animal deaths made me feel (rip entire penguin colony, I’m a monster).
Now, truth be told, none of the above reasons would impede me if I really really wanted to do it. Heck, making all those dd1 gifs took way more effort and time than rendering all the dd2 hero refs combined but I still pushed through it because I love dd1. I just don’t feel the same passion and drive about dd2 as a whole. I don’t enjoy the gameplay loop, I don’t like the backstories, I don’t appreciate the inconsistencies, like, Antiquarian was deemed “too evil” to come back as a hero, as said by the devs during a live, then turns out Flagellant was the one torturing Vestal but he gets a free pass? And he comes back as a half-rotten walking corpse? As our ally? While we have to kill other half-rotten walking corpses which aren’t obviously evil and by all means could just be attacking back in self defense (widow and woodsman)? See, I have no big qualms with any of these claims individually (sure, let Flagellant and Vestal put the past behind and get amorous, go nuts), but add them all together in the same game and it starts to feel like an inconsistent mess.
Also, why did time only seemed to pass for Flagellant? It would be so cool if all the heroes had this crazy treatment, like Crusader coming back as a corrupted Tangle soldier, Vestal (or Runaway for the matter) being a former fanatic cult member, Highwayman as a gaunt, like a collected head that somehow survived and escaped and so on. It just feels odd to me that only one hero came back wrong, you know what I mean?
But oh well, none of this matter to me anymore. I just don’t feel like making dd2 renders for the time being, hope this explains!
#darnest answers#I hope my frustrations about dd2 do not read as aggression towards anon-- this is not what I intended. I just wanted to be thorough#long post

I've recently seen a post on reddit pointing out background characters such as the one in the image, could you by any chance get this ripped by its self?
Here's the little fanatic! They're really cute, aren't they? (this is just an edit I've made of the assets, the unedited textures are under the 'read more')
EDIT: omg this is so funny, I went to save the file I edited and then apparently I had the same idea of assembling these assets earlier at some point, because there was already a file with the same name! Except I used a backdrop on this one too. (also I didn't bother to clean the white specks around the borders of each asset, as you can clearly see if you zoom on it)

Extracting DD2 audio guide
Hi hi, it's been a while huh? Kinda lost interest in dd overall big time, but I came here to share newfound knowledge!!
So since Darkest Dungeon 2 launched, I kept seeing people ask around (without any good answers) how to get the audio files from the game. Turns out the answer is simple! You don't even need AssetStudioGui for this-- the files you need are right there in your game's folder! Here's the way for it in windows with the game bought on Epic (it's probably similar with steam, not sure if anything changes on a mac though):
C:\Programs\EPIC\Epic Games\DarkestDungeonII\Darkest Dungeon II_Data\StreamingAssets
In the StreamingAssets folder you'll find many .BANK files, each one of these is basically a folder with many sounds inside! You just need a software to extract them.
I've used this one, apparently it can also be used to replace the sounds with ones of your choosing but I've only used it to extract so far.
After downloading and unzipping the Fmod_Bank_Tools folder (make sure to unzip it in a drive where you have free space to extract the sounds too), you'll find among the files a folder named 'bank' and one named 'wav'.
You need to copy the .BANK files you want from the StreamingAssets game folder and paste them on the 'bank' (make sure to just COPY, and NOT to cut nor erase anything!)
Say for instance you want the music it plays on the Sprawl, the Jester skill sound effects, and also the narrations about Denial. You should copy from the StreamingAssets folder the files named: hero_jester.bank, music_city.bank and vo_driving_denial.bank, and then paste them on the 'bank' folder.
Now you just need to run 'Fmod Bank Tools.exe' and click on 'extract'. After some time, a window will pop up saying it's completed and your sound files should be in the 'wav' folder! It takes a little while when you extract many folders at once, but it's super simple!
It should work the same for Darkest Dungeon 1, but no need for this since Red Hook shared all the first game's sounds here in this drive!
Now go forth and make the Highwayman's 'Open Vein' sound your notification sound! :)
#darkest dungeon#darkest dungeon 2#it should work the same for any game that uses BANK files-- usually unity games I think#long post

How do you access hero barks through the game files? I can't seem to find them. I got the game from Steam, if that's any help.
If you're on a PC (Macs are different, I don't know why) go to where your game is saved on your computer (usually something like C:\Programs\Steam\steamapps\common\DarkestDungeon) and then go into the “localization” folder. The barks are on the “dialogue.string_table.xml” file, you can open it with most text editors.
If you’re looking for DLC content barks, you might want to look for them in the “dlc” folder in the main DarkestDungeon folder, barks and text will always be in the “localization” folder in those too.
You can scroll through the file until you find the language you want (beware that the text is a bit hard to read). If you want the English version, in the past I’ve copied and pasted a cleaner version just for easy reading, you can check it here.
WAIT, it just occurred me you might be talking about Darkest Dungeon 2?
If that's the case, follow the same procedures to find you game on Steam, then go through these folders:
DarkestDungeonII > Darkest Dungeon II_Data > StreamingAssets > Localization > Sources
Darkest Dungeon II has its barks all segmented through categories rather than one big file, it's easier to find what you need but kind of a drag if you just want to read all the barks from the same character, you need to open lots of files rather than just ctrl+F your way around one doc. Here's what the bark folder should look like:

Hello! I was wondering if you had the hero shrine models rendered at all as I’d really love them
Hi, those are inside the OLD RENDERS folder in their respective folders (except for Vestal, which is on her own folder). Here, I'll link them for you:
Backstory Heroes
Backstory NPCs
Vestal
Unrelated, but I've got a spike of energy last week and decided to upload all the dd1 alternate palette sprites to the wiki! I've had already edited and compiled all of those way back in 2021 in a google drive folder (not to mention the gifs) but I didn't know how to edit the wiki at that point. It's so complete now, it's so satisfying!!
I thought of doing the same for dd2 with my palette renders but those kinda suck: the lack of pose plus the bad lighting, they can help as reference but that's about it. I think I'll limit my wiki contributions to dd1, which is the game I like the best as well.
#darnest answers#sorry for the radio silence-- I grew kinda tired of dd as of lately#been playing other games but nothing captured me like dd in terms of lore#no other game has dismas too#or a hot villain like vvulf </3
