STATISTICS A lecture about statistics was given on August 28 by Miss Edwilyn Madelo-Lim. This lecture was given to help us with our statistical treatment of our data in our research topic. The program outcome for this activity is PO #4 (engaging in research activities). During the lecture, I recalled some of the terms that were discussed to us during our pre-med course. Miss Madelo delivered this lecture to us three years ago in our previous course so I didn’t have a hard time understanding the lecture. This topic is significant to learn in research especially during the determination of our sample size and analysis of the data. I realized that statistics play a vital role in research. We were taught about methods of data analysis, data description, data presentation, and different statistical treatments. This lecture is important for us researchers in guiding us during the interpretation and analysis of our data. I will apply everything that I have learned in this lecture. I realized that I also need to understand statistics because it will greatly help us when conducting research. Overall, I think this activity is really interesting for students who love to do research. It would really help researchers in every step of the study. Each of the research groups was able to figure out what specific statistical treatment was needed for their topic with a piece of advice from Miss Madelo.

The program outcomes in this research activity are PO #8 (adhere to ethical, professional, and legal Standards), PO #9 (demonstrate nationalism, internationalism, and dedication to service), and PO #10 (practice the principles of social accountability). Cebu Doctors’ University - College of Medicine has a vision, mission, and goals that can help us achieve the program outcomes by inculcating us the attitudes and values needed to be a physician imbued with professionalism. It also guides us to attain the desired outcomes in this curriculum. Reading the CHED memorandum and CDU-CM VMG made me realize that being a graduate of Doctor of Medicine is not just about simply treating the patients but also being a professional who can manifest clinical competence and communicate proficiently. As a student in this institution, I must be committed to following the path set out by our curriculum. I should start molding myself to become a competent and dedicated student, with the VMG to guide me. Overall, the lessons I got from this activity will help me achieve my goals in the future and it helped me assess myself. I also realized what I should do for me to develop all these skills that are expected of a graduate of the Doctor of Medicine degree program.

TWEETCHAT #cducm Last August 16 and 17, we participated in a tweetchat headed by our moderator, Dr. Helen Madamba, which lasted from 5 pm to 6 pm. This activity helps us realize these Program Outcomes that a Medical student should have: PO #2 (communication), PO #4 (engage in research), and PO #7(life-long learning). During the first tweetchat, I was not able to participate fully due to a commitment to an activity in the College of Medicine. In the first few minutes of the tweetchat, I was able to respond to some of the questions. I was surprised by the flood of tweets and a lot of students joined the activity. This activity showed the importance of communication. The next day, the topic was about research (PO #4). I have read plenty of ideas about the contribution of research to the improvement of society. My experience made me realize the importance of tweetchat. It allowed us to voice out our ideas and it also helped us learn from other students. It also made me fully aware of the issues in our society that need further research. This tweetchat helped me acquire lessons that I can apply in this course. This activity made me see what I can do to support research which can truly improve the society. Overall, this activity was not just fun but it allowed us to be interactive through modern technology. This is my first time involving myself in this kind of activity and I can say that it made me look forward to another one.

SOMEONE I LOOK UP TO In this activity, we were able to appreciate the value of research and physicians who engaged their lives in doing research. “Research is nothing more than a continuing process of studying to learn new things and using such knowledge to empower people,” as quoted by Dr. Belizario. The program outcome for this activity is PO #4 (engaging in research). Dr. Vicente Y. Belizario Jr, AB, MTM&H is a prolific writer-researcher, who co-authored/co-authored over 70 scientific publications on neglected tropical and parasitic diseases in peer-reviewed local and international journals.” He is the editor, as well as one of the contributors of our main reference book for Parasitology, the best-selling “Philippine Textbook of Medical Parasitology”. He is also a Professor in the College of Public Health, University of the Philippines Manila. He was formerly the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Executive Director of the National Institutes of Health in UP Manila. He is also a former Undersecretary in the Department of Health. Last year, during our review for the Medical Technology board exam, I was allowed to listen to a lecture filled with knowledge and words of wisdom which was delivered by Dr. Belizario. I learned that after coming back from his graduate studies, he began to pursue research about the parasitic diseases prevalent here in the Philippines. He also researched about neglected helminths infections, such as soil-transmitted helminth infection, and schistosomiasis. He also taught us everything that we need to take note of doing laboratory procedures. He shared his testimonies about his adventures while serving the public. He also mentioned that research has offered his a particularly unique avenue to give back envision himself to effect change in the lives of Filipinos. I was motivated by his dedication and compassion in pursuing his career as a public servant. Dr. Belizario helped me realize my vision to serve the public and do researches which can greatly affect people’s lives. He also emphasized that even a simple laboratory procedure result can greatly affect a person’s diagnosis and a simple error in the procedures can lead to misdiagnosis. In this course, I want to make every effort to be able to serve the people. It also inspired me to start the change that I want to see for the best of the people.

“You look better wearing this white coat and stethoscope.” This is what my mom would always tell me while dressing me up for costume parties when I want to wear a fancy dress.
Named after a robot, I am Daryl Tubig, an only child in the family. I grew up loving books and music. I was often ill and admitted in a hospital when I was young. I always adore doctors wearing those white coats attending sick persons and that made me realise my dream, to be one of them when I grow up.
Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, no one from my family expected me to pursue a medical course. People would always ask my father who will continue our family business since I want to be a doctor but that didn’t stop my parents from supporting me in my goals.
I had a lot of struggles in my pre-med course, but it did not stop me from pursuing my dream. I am a Medical Technology graduate of Cebu Doctors’ University and thankfully, a Registered Medical Technologist.
My vision is to be a Doctor of Medicine in the year 2023. My mission is to be a persistent and dedicated student, to develop compassion, and do my best in everything that I do.
