The Art in Pi
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a stunning visualization created by聽Nadieh Bremer, a data visualization designer. This data visualization just made me realize art and math is closely linked. We always think math is science, and therefore logical, objective and rigid. We thought art is fuzzy and subjective. I think through data visualization, we realize math is art, too. 聽

Data Viz: Synchronized diving in the Olympics
Tumblr media
Source: http://sxywu.com/olympics/
This data visualization, inspired by generative art, is about the synchronized diving in the Olympics. It recreates the beauty and fluidity of the divers聽in the flowing lines, as illustrated in the graphs above.聽Each line represents a synchronized diving team, and its height represents its total score. Yet, another very creative project, done by Shirley Wu.聽

Four Years of Vacations in 20,000 Colors
Tumblr media
The author reviewed the photos she took along vacations, and extracted the five primary colors from these photos. The cool colors represent scenes. The warm colors mostly represent food.聽

Butterfly - Generative Art
Tumblr media
source:聽http://www.datasketch.es/february/code/nadieh/
This is not a conventional approach to data visualization. The author experimented with Generative Art to represent colors and shapes of butterflies, using data from the Gardens with Wings. The outcome of this data visualization is rather abstract and artistic, and inquisitive.聽

The Most Common Word Translated to English with Google
Tumblr media
This is a beautiful interactive data visualization project from DataSketch. The authors collaborated with Google News Lab to capture all the single word translations of nouns聽and adjectives聽into English via Google Translate for 10 of the most popular languages. The results reveals a lot about the culture difference among these ten countries. 聽

Personal data visualization -- the designer documents her activities on May 1st in 2 parts part 1: in a circle with several components: by activity type (large color swatches), specific activity (color coded icons), food/drink details in black icons, social media icons on the inner circle, emails sent and received for gmail (red) and work email (orange).聽
part 2: kind of bizzare variable -- elevation off the ground over time on that day https://www.flickr.com/photos/laurenmanning/7246212772/in/photostream/

Chris Lo Struggles in a Car Seat
Tumblr media
This is a personal visualization by Chris Lo. During a 3-hour road-trip to New Jersey, he tracked the position of his feet and torso in a car seat. The long horizontal bar represents the position of his torso and the two smaller blocks in a 3 x 3 grid show the placement of his feet. From the data gathered, it seems he recorded his movements approximately every 3 minutes and fidgets quite a lot.

This interactive data visualization allows you to enter a few demographic variables (sex, race and age) and projects probability of age of death by cause. It is based on the CDC鈥檚聽 Underlying Cause of Death database (1999 to 2014). While it鈥檚 a very interesting tool to summarize the data in this database, I do think that framing it as a prediction tool is problematic.聽

The New York Times published a聽chart聽that shows the difference between what Americans say about healthy foods and what nutritionists say about healthy foods. The line diagonally dotted in the middle demonstrate the place of conversion. It is not the most well designed graph, but it shows a useful way of comparing two differing views revolving around one theme.

Steve Ballmer of Microsoft fame funded a project to gather and visualize how taxes are gathered and spent in the USA. It can be very overwhelming but I like the summary visualizations.聽

This visualization shows the distribution of ideology for law schools in which Supreme Court clerks attended since 1937. There are several interesting aspects about this piece which are currently relevant with as there has been much discussion about the newly appointed Supreme Court justice Neil Gorsuch and the now conservatively leaning court. First, it shows that the majority of Supreme Court clerks come from a just a few elite universities. Second, it shows that the majority of these schools tend to lean conservatively. Although the visualization is displayed relatively simple, it contains a large amount of information that can interpreted in many ways to the reader.

World Potus
Tumblr media
This project was designed by Accurat and powered by Google News Lab. It lets readers explore the search results or buzz from around the world on the then two presidential candidates regarding various issues and policies. On each issue, there are links directed to news articles that are storied in the Google Search engine. 聽It鈥檚 a very useful research tool. The only critique that I have is the color choices of the visualization; I wish they could be more informative and aesthetically pleasant.聽

National Precinct Map
Tumblr media
This map captures the results of 2016 presidential election per precinct, which is very detailed. The author made several static maps, comparing the 2016鈥瞫 results with those of 2012 and 2008, showing the changes in percentage margins between 2012 and 2016 by precinct, as well as an interactive version. It is the first time that I鈥檝e seen such a detailed and thorough map. It鈥檚 a great exploratory tool as well.聽
