david jacobs with rough hands from helping with housework, skin dry from washing dishes and doing laundry, fingers calloused from writing. his nails are bitten down to quick and his nailbeds chewed and torn. his mother cuts his hair and it’s a little bit too short whenever it’s fresh, cropped awkwardly around his brow. his trousers are a little bit too short too, his legs are long, he’s long all over, gangly and lanky, growing into himself — sometimes sure he’ll never finish, and he’ll be at this stage of not quite fitting forever. his teeth are crooked, his joints are bony, he’s covered in freckles and moles. his lips are always chapped and chewed. his jaw clicks from him always clenching it.
