I came across this wonderful photograph of my father, David Neel, and my grandma Ellen Neel from the 1950’s. Grandma started teaching my father to carve when he was a very young.

I am working on a new book, Kwakiutl Ancient Stories (working title). It has been in progress for some time, & I will complete the manuscript by the end of the year, and published in 2026.  Countless hours go into writing a book, so I will very focused for the next while.

Charles Edenshaw, was born in 1839, and is one of a very influential Northwest coast Native carver & hand engraver. He comes from Skidegate, Haida Gwaii, and his work has inspired generations of Indigenous artists.

Many years ago, the carvers of the Northwest coast created masks that were inspired by the people and events of the times. During his journey as an artist, David discovered long-forgotten masks in public collections, such as a starvation mask, portrait mask of a chief’s daughter, portrait of a ship captain, and many others. This inspired him to create masks based on the people and historic events of our time.

 David says about his work: tradition is a foundation to build upon and not a boundary to restrain creativity.
