Final Critique
Alexis: This piece had cool editing transitions and a lot of interesting videos. I would have like to know where on campus the location was for this one. I also appreciated the message that this piece gave. It tells the viewer that anyone can be happy anywhere that they are, and to just enjoy your surroundings.
Amelia: This piece was very well made. The octopus looks very well drawn and like it took a lot of time. The location fits well too, as it is in the swimming pool at DU. The video is pretty short, but it doesn’t need to be much longer to appreciate the artwork. It would have been very cool to actually see this one in the location.
Cheng: A very fun video about the building. Connects to the location well, and had some fun editing in it. The video was longer than most of the other projects, and that speaks to the time and effort that would have gone in to making a video that long. From experience, I know that it isn’t easy.
Dom: Dom’s piece was a quick little video of a 3D rendered loch ness monster in the pond outside of ECS. This piece didn’t necessarily have a large, deep meaning, but I think it is a cute video to provide a smile to the viewer. The little monster is very charming, and connects very well with the real life surroundings.
Elisa: This project, titled “Creepy Statue”, was exactly that. It was a cool video that had some ominous music, the sky turning dark and a small creature peeking out of the statue. I like the decision to add heartbeat sound effects to the video, as that really ups the tension for the viewer.
Emily: Was not uploaded when I did critiques.
Haolin: His piece was a music video involving the art studio. I really enjoyed the editing in this piece, and in particular the shots that turned to all black. It was unique and something I hadn’t seen much before. I also liked the connection he had to the location, playing a joyful song because he enjoyed his first art class in the building.
Jack: Was not uploaded when I did critiques.
Jill: Jill’s piece was very creative, and I especially enjoyed the mix of drawn art with the real life photo. The photo of the building was taken on a fittingly cloudy day, which adds to the piece as a whole. I especially liked the part where the windows lit up and a shadow could be seen moving through them, it was very well executed.
Luis: This piece had some very clean editing in it. I thought the title screens at the beginning and the end were very cool, but I would have added some sound to them. The separation of the red and blue channels gave all of the footage a cool 3-D glasses type look that I enjoyed, and added to the uneasiness of the piece. It also fits his style that has become so trademark throughout the quarter. I would just be curious to know where on campus this was meant to be located.
Olivia: This piece was the most interactive out of all the pieces I looked at. I think it was a cool and creative way to incorporate the pop walk system, and have the video be close to an augmented reality app. I think it is very creative to be able to tilt the phone up and have the sky change right in front of you.
Rachel: Rachel’s video was about someone imagining a trip to the ice cream store. I enjoyed the music changes to fit the different scenes, and also the transitions between the imagination and the bench scene. The decision to use black and white for the ice cream scene really makes it feel like a dream or a fantasy, and I think that was a good choice.
Ying: Ying’s piece titled “Please Listen to Me” tells the story of a girl who is mistreated by people around her. Throughout the video, everyone ignores her until she snaps. The piece took place partly at Evan’s chapel, which I think was a good location for the story. I also liked how the video played with aspect ratios and the rotation of the camera.

PopWalk Proposal
For My video, I want to use one of the many towers on the DU campus, since they are my favorite parts and stick out. I was thinking of putting some thing in a green screen behind them, maybe something playful and fun.

Written Critique of Haolin’s Playlist
Haolin focused his playlist on the theme of fathers. All of the videos selected are clips from various movies or tv shows that depict different father - son relationships, fitting well with his theme. All of these clips are from different media, some with different themes, genres, and messages, but all of the clips relate to one another through the foundation of that relationship. In his text describing his playlist, he describes how he hasn’t been able to see his father much while he’s been studying, and this playlist is meant to relate to his real life experiences. The playlist is organized well. There isn’t any specific order as far as I can tell, but it seems like for this theme and project, there isn’t necessarily a needed order of things. They are all related, but not really a certain sequential in any way. Many of the clips depict a father and son bonding, or the death of a father in some way, and those don’t really have a sequence. The theme for this piece is strong, however, and it does a good job of creating a specific feel to it.

This playlist was created with the idea in mind that I wanted to find some of the weirdest and most obscure videos that I could on youtube. I was curious to see what I could find. These are videos that I tend to enjoy, because they feel more raw and unfiltered than a lot of the more big budget productions. It’s interesting to see what is uploaded to the site every day, because on youtube, millions of hours of content is being constantly uploaded. A lot of these videos also tend to lack context, and I enjoy looking at them and trying to fill in the context myself. I feel like these videos lack content because the creators of these videos that aren’t supposed to get lots of views usually aren’t creating these videos for an audience of youtube viewers, but for themselves or their friends, who would already have the surrounding info. The main reason I chose to make a playlist of these videos was to try and fill in the reasons behind making all of these videos, and compare them to more conventional youtube videos that are made by either more polished creators, or creators with more subscribers. After watching all of these, I came to the conclusion that these videos tend to have less context, but can offer more entertainment value if you go in looking for that experience. The videos feel much less like they were produced by a corporate entity, and more personal.

Video Project Proposal
For my video project, I’d like to do some sort of comedic skit. I’m not exactly sure about what yet, but these are the type of projects that I usually enjoy. I’d also like to focus on camerawork, video/audio quality, and maybe special effects, as these are things that I would like to improve on or learn more about. At the moment, I’m thinking that the skit will break the 4th wall in some way that can play with the element of time.

Reading #2 Questions
1. Does the introduction of this new medium allow artists to be more creative? Does it limit them in any way?
2. Will the digital art we see today lose its value as technology evolves?
