Back when we were merely engaged, before we were willing to kiss on camera, we had each other's backs. We've grown in our chemistry as a team since then. Our loyalty to one another has been tested by our pasts, our finances, our kids, other people's kids, our jobs, the enemy, etc. But through all that we've learned to fight each other less and fight all else together as a team. We've seen couples prematurely take on the "us vs everybody" philosophy while people were trying to tell them it might not work. Those in people weren't their enemies, they were trying to help. And they were right. A lot of them are divorced now. The only thing stronger than the oneness of a couple, is the oneness of a community. But once that community affirms you as a couple and y'all make it to the altar and you put them rings on, fight for that oneness. Daily. No matter what. I was thinking today about how going through therapy benefits, not just me, but my family. My wife @teabells went through therapy twice now. When she did, it unearthed the solution to problems we'd been having for years. We were stuck in a cycle where we'd have the same, reoccurring argument. We were trying to fix it. We'd try different things. But somehow we'd find ourselves back in that same argument. Addressing my wife's trauma gave her clarity, which she shared with me. And with that clarity we were able, as a team, to finally attack the root of the problem. We're not having any major reoccurring arguments now, but this is a means for me to examine my own heart. God's word will help me determine what I do with what i find. And, by God's grace I'll be a better husband and father. Again, not because I have obvious major issues i need to deal with (that I know of), but because I have a fundamental belief that we all have blindspots. One of the more fascinating things to see as people respond to my album is the love for #Carnivores, but distaste for #StrangeFruit. I intentionally put Strange Fruit right after Carnivores because they're so similar. It's the same principal, but Strange Fruit has a specific context for application. But i think we understand why that is. American Christianity historically maintains a huge blindspot when it comes to race and justice. If you've read my blog #PassThePlank (link in the bio) you know my thoughts about it. These are the kinds of truths that separate the disciples from the temporary followers. Jesus could have easily used his omniscience to sort through the crowds and say "you, you, and you are fake. You can leave. You're cool. You think I'm a genie ✌🏾. All of you on my left won't last more than few days anyways. Save us both some time and go home". But He didn't. He spoke the truth and let them reveal themselves. That way all the real saints could see it, not just Him. The truth helps make some of boundaries for you. You don't always have to do all the work. I started therapy today. I told my therapist how coincidental I thought it was to be starting therapy on the first day of Black History Month. I've believed theoretically that all African Americans need therapy, but never sought it out. So when the Lord removed all the obstacles and dropped a free opportunity in my lap, I held myself accountable to my own words. Tonight was the first of 16 weeks and I've already learned some things about myself. I'm looking forward to the rest. Racism in America has been so normalized, that I've downplayed it's affects on me, from childhood to now.
