Dawnbreaker | Chapter 2 | "The sun will be rising soon" | Content Warning
Minnie opened her eyes slowly.
The sun filtered in above her, shining through the wood of the old bridge. It flickered on the leaves creating a sight that could only be described as dancing.
Minnie squinted, the light hurt.
She moved very slowly, gently stretching each muscle that made up her body, while her brain slowly caught up to everything around her.
The air was heavy with rot and death, every breath was sour.
Minnie could taste blood in her mouth; clung to her tongue and her teeth.
The wooden bridge was chilly and she was shivering cold, despite her parka wrapped around her.
But, the birds were chirping.
It was morning.
Minnie pulled herself up into a sitting position, leaning over and resting her arms in her lap. Blood dripped from her face and it plopped onto the sleeves of her ruined bloody coat.
It suddenly hit her then, she remembered.
Her face-
Almost at once, like it was waiting for a cue, pain erupted across her cheek like fire and she clenched her jaw shut. A wailing cry escaped her throat and she covered her mouth with her hand.
There was so much blood everywhere. On her skin. Her clothes. The wooden floor around her. And her face was still bleeding. If she didn’t clean it quickly, she’d risk infection.
Wait. What was she thinking?
Wasn’t she already infected?
Shouldn’t she be dead?
Minnie’s mind raced and she gingerly moved her left arm towards her. She rolled the sleeve of her coat up and she held her breath. What she saw only made her thoughts worse.
A dirty human bite surrounded by dried up blood, it was sore to the touch, hot and swollen.
No fucking way-
It was real.
All of it was real. It wasn’t one of her hallucinations or an awful nightmare.
The explosion. The fire. The walkers on the beach. Everyone fucking dead. Violet crying out her name.
Why didn’t she listen to Violet?
Why was she so stupid?
Lilly’s dead… she could’ve gone to Violet. She didn’t have to be afraid anymore.
But she still was afraid.
Just a scared little girl. Afraid of ghosts and nightmares. Afraid of herself.
Minnie took a deep breath and pushed her sleeve back down, hiding the filthy bite. Pain ached throughout her entire body. She could feel blood stuck to her neck. The gunshot in her arm felt hot. Everything hurt like hell.
She recounted everything that had happened:
One on her left forearm, the first bite back on the shoreline.
One on her right shoulder, the walker had pulled her backwards.
One on her left upper arm, a second walker had joined in smelling the blood from the bullet.
One on the right side of her neck, the third walker tried to tear her throat out.
And finally, the one in her mauled cheek… the walker who had surprised her… the gunshot that ripped her face off… she could still hear the ringing in her ears… feel the scream in her throat…
Five bites
How the hell was she alive?
Wildfire hadn’t taken her, or maybe it had, and she was dreaming. But every aching pain felt too real. This couldn’t be a dream.
She had to focus.
She would solve this later. She needed medicine. If the virus hadn’t taken her, any other infection could spread to these untreated wounds and take her quick.
She no longer felt feverish but she was tired. Her throat was dry and thirsty. She felt hunger stab at her stomach but she could tolerate that. She had many times before.
But how much more death could she take?
Minnie stood up to her feet and took a few steps back, surveying her surroundings. Walker corpses littered the bridge behind and around her. Her surroundings and her own self smelt horrendous.
A thick dried up blood pool lay a few feet away to her left, soaked into the wooden boards.
Tenn had been shot through the neck… she saw it… with her own gun… his little face… she watched the light go out of his eyes.
It made her happy then.
Now, it weighed on her like a stone dropping into a lake.
It was her fault.
And this time, it hadn’t been Lilly’s commands. She had made that choice, she had brought the gun here.
Tenn’s body was nowhere to be seen.
That was good. She didn’t think she could handle seeing him, in whatever state he was in. Was he a walker? Or had he been buried? Was he torn to shreds resting in some walker’s filthy guts, never to be digested and just remain a blob of gore?
Why wasn’t she any of those things? Why wasn’t she dead?
She deserved to die.
She had wanted to die.
It was the only real choice she had and the universe took it away.
‘Are you laughing at me, God? Is this a cruel joke?’
Minnie wanted to shout into the sky but she couldn’t bear the words. The pain was too much. She could barely move her jaw without her cheek lighting up her nerves like a bonfire.
So instead, she cursed in her own mind.
‘I believed in you all my life… I was good… but you never helped me, no matter how much I prayed and begged… begged for someone to stop her… for someone to find me… You tease me with death then you take it away? You let my sister die. You let me be tortured and used as a toy. You let my parents die… You let the world burn… You’re nothing but a myth made up to comfort children and appease the insane radicals… Well, I don’t fucking care anymore. If this is my punishment, so fucking be it.’
Minnie paced around the bridge for a while, staring into the broken chasm in the wooden boards. The rocks protruding from the rushing water below.
She could jump. Let herself go. Hit the rocks; maybe get impaled. Or she’d bleed out slowly and the gorge would swallow her up. She wouldn’t fight the current.
She had nothing left to live for, anyway.
… except herself.
She wasn’t dead. Maybe it was a second chance? Did she want to die? Throw it away?
For once, she was… unsure.
She spent so much of the past year wishing for death. Not caring anymore. Not letting anyone get close to her. Risking her life in fights.
But, she didn’t have to fight anymore. She didn’t have to go back. Lilly couldn’t control her anymore.
But, she couldn’t go home either. The Delta wasn’t home. The school wasn’t home. She had no home. No friends, no family. Nothing.
She didn’t know what to do.
Minnie sat down and swung her legs over the chasm, sitting calmly over the side, thinking everything over. She wouldn’t jump, that’s for sure.
If she was confident about living, trying a second chance, she needed medicine.
And the only place she knew for sure had medicine was the smoldering ruins of the S.S. Fitzgerald, if any of the cargo had even survived the explosion.
Which meant, going back to the Delta. Going back to the beach where her life flipped over.
…
Fuck it
After all, there was nothing left to lose.

Dawnbreaker | Chapter 1 | "Maybe death is like falling asleep"
“I did it! I found you! Oh, Tenn-“
Oh, baby brother, I’m so sorry- I failed you…
Did I disappoint you?…
Did I scare you?
…
“I’m finally going some place better… I want you there with me.”
…
Away from her…
Is this what death feels like? It’s so quiet. It’s so peaceful… No more pain. No more of her. No more wishing I was dead. No more… No more… Just slip away…
“Tenn, look at me! I know that looks like her, but your sister is gone!”
… Is that what you think of me?
… am I that far gone?
Sibling killer
Freak
Stop…
Beast
… no one would care if you gave up, Minerva
No more…
…
Sophie-… Sophie would care…
Please, no more…
… Sophie’s gone…
Sophie, will you take me home?…
“I killed her… she was twisting my head with her lies.”
She isn’t listening, dumbass… She loved hates you
You killed her! You monster!
She hates you
What have you done?…
I’m sorry, baby brother
“I’m taking Tenn home! I’m going home!”
I killed you too…
It’ll all be over soon…
I’m sorry, mom… I couldn’t protect them…
The pain will end… The night will be over soon…
Just give in…
Let’s go home

Inspired by an alternative universe fanfic I made in my head, where Minnie "survives" her death (except, did she?). I am currently writing the fanfic and hoping to illustrate it into a comic.
I realized I didn't draw them with clothes so uh interpret that however you want, it was not intentional. And, I'm too lazy to go back and fix it.
In my mind, this happened in the middle of the night where Vi wakes up to find Minnie brooding, who can't sleep due to night terrors. I pictured Minnie doesn't like sleeping with a shirt because it gets too warm. Vi, I don't have an excuse for why she's not dressed, lmao
