Apollo and Dionysus at the fable
large remnants down dusty rafters the asp the donkey the hare the liar roll snake head dice
sang a sad old song you know one
I am no one’s fool I am your fool every time drunk something only grown ups sing spittle in your face
find me in an orchard of willows seeing into a deep blue pint the astonish world begins
gush and gash meet on the road to lazarus I paint ghosts no one can see you’ve seen them too
I dare

students as months of the year
january: fresh journals, black and white notes, bullet journals filled with motivational quotes, cold brew coffee, loves writing letters, finishes everything on time, a daydreamer, seems laid back but really they’re stressed about everything
february: doodles in the margins of notes, the person who lends you their pens, sloppy handwriting, loves motivational speeches and classical music, finishes easy assignments early but writes their essay the night before its due,
march: straight A’s, study playlists, the teachers favorite, color coded notes, everyone thinks they’re naturally smart (but really they’re spending every night studying), forgets to eat sometimes, hasn’t slept for what feels like years
april: open windows, listening to the rain and thunder, tea pots full of earl grey, a functionally messy desk, fairy lights, always losing their pens, a huge nerd, afraid to raise their hand in class in case their answer is wrong
may: cramming for tests, lives in the library, highlighters and sticky notes everywhere, drinks espresso, would definitely consider bringing their coffee pot to school, messy desk, if an assignment is due at 9:00 they’ll submit it at 8:59
june: late nights, smoothies for breakfast, hanging out with friends, takes notes on their laptop, minimalist, organized, says they’re studying but they’re actually on studyblr, tries to study everything at once and gets distracted
july: staying up late to read, learning new languages, focuses on the learning and not the grade, watches documentaries for fun, loves the classics, owns a thousand pens, takes studyspo pictures, hundreds of unread emails,
august: stationery shopping, getting ahead in class, iced drinks, spending weekends with friends, takes very little notes but does well in class anyways, a relaxed personality, healthy snacks, the master of self care
september: a morning person, new pens and folders, a perfectionist, audio records classes and re-writes notes, over works themselves, loves the smell of new books, competitive, “i’m gonna fail!” but ends up getting A’s and B’s
october: chai lattes in travel mugs, will study for three days straight and then not study for a week, snacking in class, uses washi tape and stickers, sleeps for eight hours but is tired anyways, terrible at accepting compliments
november: gratitude journals, mental health days, the baristas at their local cafe know their name because they’re always studying there, study groups, loves to travel but never travels, cinnamon in their drinks, trouble sleeping, sweet smiles
december: hot chocolate, wrapped in a fluffy blanket, says they don’t care about grades but panics when they get less than a B, to-do lists, tutors their friends, watches movies in their free time, vanilla candles

Eerie Atmospheric Settings: Plot Starters
Instead of a specific plot to work around, here’s a list of settings that all feature a melancholy, moody, or creepy atmosphere. Simply send me a symbol for a setting you want to RP in, and I’ll either make a starter or approach you to plot!
🌕A full moon night with wind whistling through the trees
🌊The seashore late at night, with lightning over the water in the distance
🏤Stepping into a house that gives off all the wrong vibes
🍁A cold day in late autumn, which is silent and deeply lonely
🎹Nighttime in an ancient house/manor, with the tinkling of piano keys from the next room
💧 Rain in the early morning, so dark that there’s hardly a sunrise
⛪A church right after a funeral, a small handful of people dressed in black hanging their heads in silence
🌳A maze-like forest at dusk, with a sense of anxiety as the sun disappears
⛵On the beach before dawn as remnants of a ship wreck wash onto shore
🍂A chilly, overcast autumn afternoon
🌃Midnight in a busy city, sirens blaring a few blocks away
🎃After dark on Halloween night after trick-or-treating ends
🚘Sitting with a popped tired on the side of a long stretch of road, waiting
⚡Distant thunder from a massive storm headed straight this way
🥀An overgrown garden of nothing but poisonous (or dead, dry) plants
🌾An eerie plot of farmland with seemingly no one around for miles
🐊Murky swampland with posted warnings to keep people away
🔥 A roaring bonfire in the distance on a pitch black night, with dark silhouettes crowded or dancing around it
🚧Standing near old, abandoned train tracks when the bell starts to ring
🐟Taking a swim on an uninhabited plot of beach, noticing ripples in the water
🌿An old-fashioned plantation with secretive locals and a bitter history
💀A cemetery full of dead, dry flowers as if all of the plots have been forgotten, some of the stones cracked or sinking into the dirt
🚇A dingy old subway station, walls chipped to pieces, while waiting for a ride home
🌈The sad silence after a violent storm, debris and wreckage everywhere
👗An attic full of musty clothes and antiques belonging to someone long-dead
❄ A snowstorm locking everyone in their homes, with electricity flickering
🍄An enchanting plot of forest or stream, tiny whispers cutting the silence
🌑Inside of a re-occurring nightmare had time and time again
☔Taking a long walk with an umbrella, struggling with a low, low mood
☕At a quiet cafe, but unfamiliar folk are whispering and staring
🌵A winding road through the desert with only one dingy hotel, its ‘vacancy’ light flickering red
💤Dreaming of scraping nails gainst the window glass, and waking to still hear it
🐕A quiet night, the only sound being the call of coyotes/wolves in the woods

Happy Birthday
Yesterday was G’s birthday, and he was away, so I was only able to say happy birthday today.
you know what he said?
“yeah, now i can finally drive cars and ride people!”
which, unoriginal, but still... fml?
in other news, tonight I have a fancy dinner to attend. I’m VERY excited! I haven’t been to something this nice in... gosh, two? Three? years.
I was in a fight with my friend last week (tears and EVERYTHING), but I think we’re finally back to normal.
So yeah? Good day.

A Southern Gothic
Rusty Gates guard crumbling headstones,
Forgotten the ghosts who call them their home,
A wind blows whispers from the devil’s dark tongue,
His temptations causing hate that will go unsung,
Old roads left abandoned call silence their friend
Cracks in the asphalt show visions of a dire end,
Farms sit alone waiting in the sun,
Their workers long gone from the wars lost and won,
Silence pierces the trees and hushes the birds
Echoes of cries remain unheard,
Moonlight showers the deepest hollows
Exposing the hidden that we know not to follow,
Across fields of tobacco and groves of trees,
Eyes of the others peer out to see,
Paths cut deep by the ones who came here before,
Still hold a hallowed presence and will evermore,
A wolf pays respect with a solemn cry,
To the forgotten ones that come back in the night.

FOLLOW THE MONEY: THE COINAGE OF LATER IMPERIAL ROME: A REFLECTION OF ECONOMIC STRESS & DECLINE
UNLIKE the practice of professional numismatists, I prefer to see the “big picture”. So, my entire Roman coin collection, all 250 pieces, from Julius Caesar to Valentinian III is laid out on a single pane of glass in a cabinet, in chronological order. In an instant, in almost a single glance, I can take in hundreds of years of Roman history, and dozens upon dozens of rulers. One characteristic of the Roman Imperial coinage is easily seen when viewed this way; the relentless debasement of the silver denarius, the workhorse currency of the Empire, a coin about the size of an American dime.
Augustus (r. 27 BCE - 14 CE) minted a relatively pure denarius, with a silver content of about 95-98% (a fineness of .95-.98). The silver content of the denarius remained roughly constant through the reign of his great-grandson Nero (r. 54-68 CE, coin 1), and into the reign of Emperor Domitian (r. 81-96 CE), of the Flavian Dynasty, in the late first century CE (coin 2). By the time of Marcus Aurelius (r. 161-180 CE) and his son Commodus (r. 180-192 CE, coin 3), about a century later, the fineness of the denarius was about .8. During the reign of Septimius Severus (r. 193-211 CE), the fineness dropped to only .5. In other words, denarii that were supposed to be nearly 100% silver were now only about half that much. By then, coins contained about 50% tin or zinc, or any other white metal the mint had to hand. (Eventually, as the fineness dropped even further, the Imperial mint began to admix copper into the coins).

Appleton Ladies Potato Race
I went on an excursion today with people from my drama class, English class and the all girls’ English class to the Ensemble Theatre, it was for the drama class, it was just that the my English class is the top class, and the all girls’ is taught by my drama teacher. We went to see the ‘Appleton Ladies Potato Race’ written by Melanie Tait, about sexism, and inspired by the playwright’s true experience about the potato sack race prizes in her home town of Robertson, NSW. We went by train, and when we got there we were escorted, how nice, right? at the place we got to sit at this little wharf type thing (in reality, it’s a park right next to the ocean in Milton’s Point) and we saw fish! Not those “look fish!” “those are tadpoles” kind, genuine, as big as my forearm type fish! It was amazing, as was the play.
Not to mention-- oh my goddddd, not to mention-- the cast? Gorgeous! Inspirational! the chemistry between cast members? amazing! The diversity? IT’S THERE BABES! Don’t even get me started on the characters. The difference between character and actor was amazing, yet the characters were still fluid and believable.
One character, Nikki, whilst still having some deeply racist and sexist ideologies (even stated by her actor-- Amber McMahon), she’s still shown as a complex and 3D character, whose ideas are shown as more a result of her environment, and social customs in rural town Australia.
Auntie Barb (performed by Meriddy Eastman), who began as a nervous, compliant older woman who semi adopted the two ‘main’ girls. When I say Auntie Barb deserves all of your love, I MEAN Auntie Barb deserves all of your love. In the beginning, Auntie Barb is shown as a kind of ditzy, friend of the world character, as opposed to her friend Bev. Throughout the play, however, we see her character develop as she chooses to stand up for what she believes in, the ladies’ potato sack race getting just as much money as the men’s.
Penny, sweet sweet Penny, local come big city kid come local once more. Penny really is the star of the show. She comes back, with all her medical school knowledge to work as a GP for Appleton for ‘The Surgery’ (which I can only assume is her clinic). Penny, who lives in the posh house on top of the hill. Penny, who went away from her small home town. Penny, who is outcast for not only standing up for the women in the races, but is a lesbian.
And how could I forget my favourite Art Teacher and Syrian Refugee, Rania? Performed by the beautiful and ever attentive Sapidah Kian. How do I begin to describe her? She moved to Appleton a few years ago, and still feels outcast by the others in her new town. She’s an Art Teacher, whose degree isn’t recognised, so she’s slowly chipping away at her online degree, when I asked about the costume inspiration, Rania was described as someone who often looked in thrift stores for cheap clothes, but thanks to her knowledge of colour, she manages to make all of her looks trendy and chic.
I can’t even get into Bev I’m so exhausted. An action-packed, fun filled day indeed. If you get the opportunity to see these amazing ladies-- or even just the play-- in action, I highly recommend. However, maybe don’t bring small children or your homophobic relatives. There is swearing and some themes explored aren’t generally for children, (drug-addiction, homophobia, inequality, racism, etc.) I would recommend for maybe 12+.

“Poetry is not about an event. It is the event. Art is the resistance of complacency: It always stands in opposition to numbness. That is why it just doesn’t die, poetry—despite so many death notices. It is always there, waking us up when we get numb, poking us in the eye.”
—Ilya Kaminsky, in Garth Greenwell’s “Still Dancing” interview in the March/April issue of Poets & Writers Magazine (2019)
