thinking about adapting the secret history for any medium makes me insane because it's literally the dark academia book that started it all and as such 90% of its readership are truly there for the romanticism and not the utter harrowing lack of love throughout the book, which is like a goodfellas fandom that's here for the hollow sense of fraternity and not the inevitable exposure of mafia life as gang violence and greed. the secret history is a story where brotherhood doesn't triumph. where love isn't the answer. where friendship doesn't save the day. it's about a group of young people who aspire to delusions of divinity and ambitions of godhood, who preach truth love and beauty and don't practice any of it. who consume tales of betrayal and doom and tragedy like its biblical dogma and don't internalize a single damn word. it's about every type of person who falls in love with the superficial and the shallow and then fucks around enough to find out. any retelling of the story has to make you love these kids because you have to understand how you could be the victim of alluring illusions, and it has to end colder and uglier than you would've thought possible. anything else means that whoever adapted it fell for the dream, or didn't care enough to wake their audience up. it has to be a richard telling the story. not a henry.

The most "this is exactly what would happen if a bunch of queer leftists could also shoot laserbeams from their eyes" thing about First Class is this weird mess of who's-flirting-with-whom. Erik and Charles are clearly A Thing, but Erik is also going out of his way to hit on Raven, who's into it but also super into Hank, who has complicated feelings about Raven but by DoFP is common law married to Charles, who's still holding a torch for Erik and also, kind of sort of, his own sister-who's-not-really-his-sister, who at some point after First Class hooked up with one of Erik's Brotherhood followers and had a whole baby-that-everyone-is-just-pretending-isn't-hers and makes friends with Erik's son-that-nobody-knew-he-had.

Meanwhile Darwin and Havok are off living through a whole gay tragedy movie just off-screen.

People who write fics where Charles never uses his telepathy on people without permission and is against all violence, not just killing or not wanting to be violent himself. Did we watch the same movies. That man does whatever he wants and chooses to believe he is always correct even when he is most definitely not. It's his most interesting character trait.
