“One day I'll send you out for a routine inquiry and it'll turn out to be just that. But I won't hold my breath. You'd find something suspicious in a saint's sock drawer.” Blog dedicated to a young copper from Oxford who listens to Wagner, solve crimes using crossword puzzles and drives a jaguar.

This feels so extremely rare to be able to say about a TV show but I genuinely feel like the pilot episode of Endeavour is probably the best TV pilot in existence, and one of (if not THE) best episodes of the whole series. I know the creators of Endeavour refer to the episodes as films in their own right and that REALLY feels exceptionally true for the pilot. I've rewatched it more than any other part of the series just because I love it so much. The way it establishes who Morse is as a character from the start is incredible (the angelic choir in the background as Morse is gazing out the bus window at the beginning makes me Feel So Many Things). You know who he is so quickly but in such a unique way, because he's a fascinating character but not exactly an archetype that you can put your finger on. Oh, he's a brilliant young upstart with bright eyes and a quicker mind than most. He's also deeply emotional, sensitive, lover of opera and poetry, and he sings in a choir. He knows he's brilliant at what he does and either shrinks away or gets snippy at any hint of condescension from his superiors, but oh, how he bleeds with the desire to please those he respects. He has a deeply held set of beliefs and principles that he lives by, but every now and then his aching need to be loved, loved, loved, oh won't somebody please love him, will tempt him into bending them. He's an angel and a wounded animal at the same time.
And you get all that from the pilot.

Assignment: Snarky Little Shit Sunday
Ha! Thanks @jessieren. Finally an excuse for more eyerolls!
Exhibit A: The common Morsian eyeroll. Appropriate for all occasions.

Exhibit B: The more unusual full-body** eyeroll. Appropriate for use with Jim or Fancy and/or anyone actively engaged in the extra-idiotic.

Morse and Thursday —ale and kindred spirits

I've still been thinking about this scene in S9, of Thursday missing Morse after Jim fails to play "the sandwich game," and I was struck again by the two glasses, so visibly different, on the table. Morse and Thursday usually have two dark ales, but Jim goes for the trendy beer the new guys are drinking.
It really shows how—no matter how Jim may begin to dress like Thursday in S8 and even start dropping a few "mind how you goes,"—on the inside, despite all outward appearances, it's Morse and Thursday who are both made of the same stuff....
From their enjoyment of poetry...

From their enjoyment of aiming a little snark at the higher-ups every now and again ...

To their occasional social ineptitude ... (really, Fred?)

To occasionally feeling like the odd man out ...

(I love Thursday channelling Morse and Jago's raised eyebrow there.)
To being curious enough about the world to get each other's references...

To most of all, being the sort of idealists who are willing to risk their lives to bring justice to the children of Blenheim Vale. Of all of City and all of County, it's only they two who race to answer the call.
You can almost see the moment of recognition—as if each is seeing into the other's very soul—in their eyes...

They each complete the other in so many ways...

I’m gonna need a couple of days before I can put anything into proper words. For now, I’m gonna go and rewatch the ending and cry, over and over again.
Thank you, Morse.
Thank you for everything.
