PLASTIC EXTRUSION

Plastic extrusion is the process in which plastic materials are converted from solid to liquid. It is then made into the finished products. In simple language, the plastic is melted down and then reshaped into something useful. There are advantages as well as disadvantages to plastic extrusion as well.

The extruder is a piece of equipment that carries out the process. A good extruder contains these components.

· A manual or vacuum hopper

· A long barrel

· External heaters

· A Die.

A manual or vacuum hopper holds and feeds the raw plastic materials.

The long barrel has a screw-like mechanism that helps plastic push through the barrel.

External heaters help maintain the desired temperature inside of the barrel.

A Die forms the profile of the plastic that will be manufactured.

ADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC EXTRUSION

· Low Cost- Plastic Extrusion molding has a very low cost compared to other molding processes. These are also more efficient. In this process, thermoplastic undergoes repeated melting and hardening. This process allows the waste to be reused rather than discarded. The machine operates continuously, therefore it reduces the chances of inventory shortage. It can continuously work for 23-hours.

· Better Flexibility- Extrusion provides flexibility in products. Products can be manufactured with a consistent cross-section. Extrusion molding can produce complex shapes.

· Extrusion Altercations- Plastics are hot when they are removed from the extruder. This also gives a chance to post-extrusion manipulations. Many of the manufacturers take advantage of this.

DISADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC EXTRUSION

· Expansion- When the hot plastic is removed from the machine, it’ll expand many times. This event is called a die swell. It is very problematic to try and predict the degree of expansion.

· Product limitations- It places limits on the products that can be manufactured.
