what were the measurements of tetsuko? and her weight?

She weighs 384 pounds (give or take a few). The only measurement I've ever calculated for her–and this was some years ago–was for her upper arms ("biceps", even though it includes her triceps) and IIRC it was 29 inches.

To be honest, I've never cared that much about measurements. All that mattered to me is that the muscles look right when I draw them, according to the character.

To tell you the truth, I haven't thought much about her measurements. But I do get asked often enough (mostly about Tetsuko, though) that I suppose I'll have to come up with something!

Every year during Memorial Day weekend I venture out to one of our numerous nearby National Cemeteries to take a few photos and contemplate. It is always a humbling experience, no matter how many times I do it.

So on this Memorial Day weekend enjoy the freedoms that we have. Sit back, relax, grill a few steaks, and watch the Indy 500.

But, just for a few moments please think about the hundreds of thousands of men and women that gave their lives to protect those freedoms. It’s the least we can do.

Wow. I was today years old when I found out there was a live-action Tetsuwan Atomu ("Astro Boy") TV series before the iconic anime series!

Mighty Atom (Tetsuwan Atom) aka Astro Boy, meets an alien lifeform in his 1959 television series.

The Mighty Atom/Tetsuwan Atom series was the first attempt at bringing Osamu Tezuka’s wonderful boy robot to the screen.  Tezuka-san himself, however, reportedly was not impressed with the live-action show.

His dissatisfaction was due to the series not being as science fiction based as the original manga; instead Mighty Atom mainly battled gangsters and ordinary thugs.  Not a dissimilar complaint to that lodged against the Adventures of Superman television series.

Tezuka-san’s dislike of the live-action version of Mighty Atom led him to vigorously adapt his manga as an anime.  Thus, in 1963, the enormously popular Mighty Atom/Tetsuwan Atom anime series debuted in Japan.  It was also dubbed and released in the United States as Astro Boy.

Tezuka-san’s distaste for the live-action show remained strong.  He was trepidatious when approached a couple of years later to adapt his manga Ambassador Magma into a live-action series.  Tezuka-san did not think Ambassador Magma would do well in that format, and suggested the producers use another character of his.

Luckily for us, Tezuka-san was successfully persuaded and the result was Ambassador Magma (aka The Space Giants), the first color tokusatsu superhero show on Japanese television (beating the original Ultraman series to the small screen by 6 days).  Tezuka-san was reportedly very, very happy with the series.

Which then leads us to 1972, 4 years after the Mighty Atom manga ended.  A production company floated the idea of another live-action Mighty Atom series (probably to take advantage of the tokusatsu hero boom at the time on Japanese TV).  Atom would be wearing an updated costume, which I think appeared in the manga, but I’m not sure; I haven’t read all the volumes yet.

Even more interesting, though, is that Atom would be played by a girl!

I don’t know much more about this proposed series beyond the fact that it never came to fruition.  If anyone has additional information I’d be much obliged if you’d share it with me and the rest of the class.

I wanna make my stance on AI image generation crystal clear to anyone who might care. 

We were never asked if bots could use our work to “learn” whatever that means. It was always an implicit part of the social contract that sharing art with the world meant other humans could be inspired by and learn from it. Inserting robots into that space is a paradigm shift that happened without our consent.

Using an image generator does not make you an artist, and the image created is not art. This is more a philosophical and semantics discussion, and it’s easy to disagree on this point, but as far as I’m concerned AI images are a slot machine, your prompts only get you to an approximation of what you want, and you settle for what it spits out, that is not personal expression, it’s the luck of the draw. A photographer understands their tool, they know what they need to get what they want, while you have AI users bragging about the fact that it took them hours to get the machine to spit out the “correct” thing because they don’t know the machine. They can’t, it’s ever growing. Again this is more about personal definitions, but it’s important to me nonetheless.

The damage outweighs the benefits. Most people use AI image generators as this funny toy, but it is already a source of anxiety for many of us, by the time big companies, which are ultimately our main source of income, can cut a couple of wages by paying a flat fee on a generator it will be too late, these gates cannot be closed. What happened at Anime Expo chibi earlier this year is utterly unacceptable as far as I’m concerned. I legitimately wonder, how many artistic careers are worth your ability to make a generic anime face out of your selfie. 

“Making art more accessible” and “democratising art” are just not very compelling arguments to me because as an artist, clicking a few buttons to get a thing just doesn’t feel all that different from just outright googling it. Art is not about struggle, you don’t have to suffer to make it, but it does have to be your voice that speaks through it, at least for me.

These 4 points are like the blankets in the bed I made, and I will lie on it until the day I die.

I've been seeing quite a lot of Vampirella art (especially here on Tumblr), so I decided to try my hand at an illustration of everyone's favorite blood-drinking beauty.

It's been far too long since I posted anything here, so here's a new drawing of Tetsuko I finished just yesterday.

I posted a topless version of this animation to my DeviantArt site some time ago; I decided it was time to produce a version that could be posted to sites (like Tumblr and Instagram) that were prudish about simple nudity.

So I added a bikini (and made a few other minor changes) and here she is: Tetsuko performing one of her signature strength feats.

I hate drawing chains (so repetitive and time-consuming), but I love the results when done.
