because it came up:
I vetted the above, and it's mostly all correct...but here's some modern science to throw in the face of every one of the above bloggers because we are now exploring bio-mordants and technically not every mordant is a metal salt:
if you want the technical layout of it all:

beeeeaminggg a warrrrp with new raddle affixed to loom = very smooth. but i got so incredibly irritated getting everything in place! lease sticks sliding around, knots undoing themselves, never having everything i needed and realizing just after getting settled. i miss the space i used to have. big loom, big room. now it's CRAMPED! HMPH! but i can still weave this way. and i can do more now. and i can slowwwly improve on the workflow.
also look at this cute pincushion i made for loomi

Q: #I love these colors! so pretty! did you dye them?
SHORT A: Yes!
LONG A: do you see the little square on the right that is multiple rectangles pieced together in a terracotta/light pink checkerboard pattern? my intention was to dye the pieces this terracotta shade. those little scraps are from an old madder dye lot. when i redid it according to the same recipe in a new place i instead got the dusky pink shade some of the pieces have. (i think the water was much softer and i failed to account for it!) i then overdyed again with mx procion dyes in three different shades and because i'd painted my walls lavender in the meantime i figured orange would look really good with it.
i was very upset when the first round of dyeing with madder didn't even remotely give me the result i was hoping for. but i love orange so now i'm quite happy. and i think that first round of dyeing gave the colours a lovely depth. i love the complexity of plant dyes and the ambiguity they have - how much they shift depending on the light.

picked up handweaving & cloth design by marianne straub from the library and it has a very clear and structured presentation of different types of weaves. wish it had more example pictures of finished fabrics but you can't have everything!
some examples of her work can be found here

interesting ideas in here!

skein winder with mechanical counter
was looking through online listings "in search of a skein winder" (wanted to look at the big old spinning machine for yarn sampling again) and accidentally bought this incredible thing:

it has a built in mechanical counting mechanism.

i just tried it and the markings are for 100 revolutions per number and additionally there's a little tin sheet attached to the hood protecting the gears that does a sproing when you've passed 100.
also my friend brought me big beautiful gallnuts as a souvenir. today is a good day!!!
#someone fixed some things but used very poor quality wood for the replacement parts#it could use some tlc in general#but it works!!#skein winder#haspel

how to fix a skipped thread
weaving ugly things for information
IS TESTING MY TOLERANCE FOR FRUSTRATION
anyways. here's how to fix a weaving mistake in post
IMPORTANT! to be done BEFORE washing fulling watering wetfinishing howeveryoucallit!

find the mistake (very important step i like to skip because i'm too impatient)

thread a short length just like the one who chose to jump onto a needle and weave it in right next to it (correctly this time) here i started and ended like 4 threads from the mistake because this wool is so sticky but if it was finer or slippery material i'd weave in a little more.

snip the mistake. snip snip snip snip all ends flush
do the wet thing
voilà
i'd show you what it looks like after but i can't find it anymore 🤡 maybe here??

DOUBLE WEAVE
double weave
it's really not complicated! but it still took me so long to understand something extremely simple! SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO PUT THE GRAPH PAPER AWAY AND LIE ON THE BED AND USE YOUR IMAGINATION

got grandmas stash today: primarily wool, all colours, singles, all a little different, a little irregular but maybe 4 wraps per cm (10/in)

no idea how much it is yet, just that it's a lot.
have to - bake everything (because i have carpet beetle paranoia) - figure out what to make from it - mAKE It
uhm
ideas welcome?
she used it for making tapestries like these

(bottom three from the right are mine, this was a line up for an exhibition we did in 2021) (i don't particularly enjoy tapestry weaving so i won't be using the yarn like this)

🤯
