Jed portrayed the shapeshifting alien taking the form of a Norwegian dog in John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982). Jed was half-wolf, half Canadian malamute, and according to Carpenter, was an excellent animal actor—after becoming familiar with the cast and crew, he would not look at the camera, crew, or dolly during scenes. Jed’s quiet manner perfectly reflected the alien’s unsettling nature. Jed would go on to act in a few other movies, and lived on his trainer Clint Rowe’s animal sanctuary until his death at age eighteen—quite old for a dog of his breed.

Some photos of my kenku costume at Anthrocon 2016, taken by @adammillerstudio! Oh boy did I ever have a lot of fun! The other raven in these photos is @qawstume and the snowy owl we are mobbing is @crystumes, who made both of the blanks that we used for our masks.
If you have any questions about this costume please check out my FAQ!

Now you listen to me, James Hawkins. You got the makings of greatness in you, but you got to take the helm and chart your own course. Stick to it, no matter the squalls! And when the times comes you get to test the cut of your sails, and show what you’re made of… Well, I hope I’m there, catching some of the light coming off you that day.

so like… obviously the proper wendigo from native american lore isn’t something to mess around with, and i fully respect the culture behind it. and i don’t totally see where the cannibal who became twisted through excessive cannibalism turned into… black fluffy animals/werewolf type animals with skull faces (especially the herbivorous ones?).
my question is does anyone have a better term for the black fluffy skull creatures other than wendigo though? it leaves a bad taste in my mouth calling them wendigo, but i love them so much and want to make a few of them myself. i dont want to infringe on the proper wendigo lore though, and while wendigo is a glorious name for a creature i dont want to link them to the name even.

OKAY SO.
The most recent SU episode (Change Your Mind) has seriously fucked me up in the best kind of way, and it’s not just because of the awesome new designs.
That’s right, ladies and gents, I’m talking about That Scene. I’ve been wanting to write a Thing on it for a while now (read: all day) but kept on putting it off because I just have so much to say about it and I really wanted it to do it justice. But then I realized whatever I say it’ll never really do it justice, so…
Might as well hop right to it, amirite??
Let’s start with Gem Steven.
From the moment Gem Steven appears, he’s almost eerily disconnected from the whole scene. He just stands there, blank-faced, not making a move to do anything until Human Steven tries to lunge towards him–
And fails.
Right when he hits the ground and the scene cuts to Gem Steven, you can see him suddenly perk up a bit, like he felt the physical impact as well. And it’s this physical impact that motivates him to start walking– or rather, would motivate him to start walking, if White didn’t interrupt him.
A lot of people have already commented on the scream, and how it represents Steven’s anger coming to light etc etc, but I want to focus more on the physical side of this arguably emotional outburst.
The scream, a moment of intense emotion, is accompanied by a literal physical explosion that leaves a Steven-gem-shaped crack in the ground (which in turn connects to the whole “it’s just steven” theme and has been analysed before in different posts.)
When White attacks him, we get to see even more of his power as he not only defends himself effortlessly against her but also attacks the others (people Steven loves!!) in the process and doesn’t even seem fazed by it.
And it’s here, only here that Steven (our Steven, human Steven) finally gets involved.
All this time, while his other self was being attacked and the ground was cracking under their feet he didn’t even bat an eye. It was like he was in a trance or something.
But the second ‘he’ turns a hand against White Diamond and the Crystal Gems, he jolts back into action, crying “No– stop– you’re hurting them!”
The whole thing almost reminds me of a split between Steven’s physical and emotional selves.
Gem Steven is Steven’s power in its rawest form. All his actions are physical, or motivated by physicality (the scream excluded, but still involving a physical outburst.) He defends himself against White without breaking a sweat, and hurts both her and the Crystal Gems without even flinching. He’s a shadow of Steven– a very powerful shadow but lacking in the emotion and loyalty that gives Steven purpose and makes him know what to use his power for.
Steven, on the other hand, is a literal mess from the moment his gem gets pulled out. He sprouts bags under his eyes, he becomes pale and sickly, he can’t even stand up by himself. He’s dying. All his physical power has been stripped away from him, leaving him with nothing but his emotions that dictate that he protects those he loves. But to do this and follow through with what his emotions ask of him, he needs physical power. Which he doesn’t have anymore.
And it’s this dependence in part that makes their reunion so beautiful to me.
You can see Gem Steven’s pupils grow as a smile splits across his face. Through Steven he’s experiencing emotion and purpose again, and in response he gives him the physical support he needs to dance around with him– look! Steven is on his feet so he doesn’t fall!

–and eventually, for a larger purpose, reform so he can protect his friends, family, and the earth.
This is a moment of pure self love, yes, but to me it’s also a moment of two sides of the same coin reuniting and offering each other what the other lacks. They’re dependant on each other to truly be Steven. They need to be powerful, and they need to have feelings.
And this show keeps making me cry.

Here is a screencap of the new interface for MojoFire.com!
Let’s start with the upper left. You see the profile pic of the blogger and underneath is a badge. MojoFire will employ a badging system where users earn badges depending on specific achievement (similar to how War Of Warcraft’s achievement system works) such as Gaining 100 Followers, Signing Up To The Newsletter Before Launch or maybe posting something on Valentine’s Day. There will be more news about badges and other system features to come in the following days.
If I can direct your attention to the speech bubble on the lower right of the image. When clicked, you will see the comments open to the right of the image post. This will integrate into a much improved chat system within MojoFire.
The small red logo to the left of the reblog bottom is the way to show if you liked a post. This bar will have a lot of future functionality. Users of the XKit extension will recognize some of that functionality, but it will be built into the site. Why Tumblr never built this level of functionality into their site is beyond me.
From the beginning of this crazy project to make a home for the communities that Tumblr abandoned, I wanted the project to have as much transparency as possible - I think the community has been through enough as it is. We don’t need more bullshit.
We have over 4000 people in our Discord group where we plan and develop the site out in public. We also recruit volunteers to help with certain aspects of the project; GUI design, PR, server development, marketing, finance, policy development and many other projects.
Join our Discord group that we have for building this thing out!

You can signup for the launch newsletter at http://mojofire.com
If you are interested in our Indiegog campaign, check this link: https://igg.me/at/mojofire
Welcome back to your community.
Please reblog.
