Just a deathnotetober reminder for everyone out there!

like the thing about the death note is that it's not just the power to kill. it is the power to kill without getting your hands dirty or seeing the consequences of your actions. it corrupts so easily because it feels abstract. you're just writing a name. you're just making declarations about who you feel should die. it doesn't even happen instantaneously -- there is so much distance between the act and the outcome. no one can be trusted with it because it doesn't feel like murder but rather like the expression of a desire, which anyone can convince themselves is just.

Y. Jericho

Jericho often wondered whether she was born to be evil. It was something that other people seemed to believe, namely Interpol agents who didn’t even work her parents’ case. Others, like her aunt, and the original task force, and even L’s daughter herself, didn’t believe that. Jericho couldn’t help wondering about it though. Especially when she looked in the mirror to see her mother’s death eyes staring back at her, glowing a red only she could see. And her father’s nose. His nose, and his hair, and his eye shape. Jericho resembled him more than her brother did. She hated it. Murderers following her in mirrors.

Jericho was a lot of things. She was a granddaughter, a niece, a student, a gymnast. She didn’t think she was evil. She didn’t want to be evil.

Once, when she was nine, an Interpol agent questioned her about Beyond Birthday. Jericho had never heard of him.

She told the agent that. He laughed. It was one of those laughs that sounded scoff-like. Mocking. He kept asking the same questions. Do you know what Beyond Birthday could do, Amane? Do you know what he inherited, Amane? Do you know what made him a monster, Amane? Jericho didn’t know why he was calling her Amane. Not at the time. She’d learned later. After her aunt had burst in and started yelling at the agent, after she had been removed from the interrogation room, after she saw her brother staring down any agent that dared glance at her. After her aunt had made a phone call, and Luci had flown into Tokyo. Luci had been the one to finally explain it to her.

Beyond Birthday had shinigami eyes. No one knew how he got them. One theory was inheritance. Jericho had felt ice going down her spine as Luci looked at her. Luci always looked at her so kindly, her big eyes soft and understanding. Jericho didn’t know why. Didn’t know how Luci could look at Jericho and not see her father’s murderer. Luci asked her if she thought inheriting shinigami eyes was possible. Jericho looked up, above Luci’s head where sharp letters spelled out Lucia Eleanor Lawliet. Very suddenly she knew why the Interpol agent refused to call her anything but Amane.

Jericho Yagami looked Luci Lawliet dead in the eyes and nodded.

happy birthday raia misora! have a bunch of fun facts about his birthday!

raia was born before his parents joined the FBI so his first two birthdays were very normal

after his parents joined the FBI they always made sure to celebrate, but it wasn't always on his actual birthday

on his actual birthday he and his sister noriko were often being watched by a nanny

they had mini celebrations

luci lawliet (lucia brightly at the time) was also looked after by this nanny for about a year she was present for one of these mini celebrations

after his parents were killed he would alternate being in Japan with his moms parents (his legal guardians) and being on the US east coast with his dad's family until his 11th birthday

after that he is always in Japan for his birthday bc he and luci lawliet have close birthdays and are always in the same city for them

raia likes to celebrate with birthday parties bc he likes to see all his friends and family all together

he has a cat named trash can (he was found in a trash can) and a common birthday gift is outfits and hats for trash can

noriko started getting raia concert tickets as birthday gifts when they were teenagers and it becomes a tradition

he also really likes having movie nights on his birthday

but commentary is required

everyone must voice their opinions on sometimes terrible movies

yes her birthday is the ides of march

she is aware of the irony

she doesn't like to think about it

her first two birthdays (when her mother was alive) were small celebrations with just her mom and maternal grandparents

she had a personalized cake made by her grandfather

her next two birthdays were when she was being raised by L

the successors threw a huge (for wammys house anyway) celebration for her

mello did her hair, Linda made decorations, near brought out his puzzle collection, and matt set up his video games

the birthday she had at task force headquarters was significantly smaller

it was just her, L ,and watari

they all made a birthday cake together

after L dies she doesn't do much for her birthday

she and Linda usually fly to wisconsin to have dinner with her grandparents

sometimes the misora-penber kids are there too

her 10th birthday was her first birthday after the kira case closed

she spent it at her maternal grandparents farm in wisconsin

anghel keehl, the misor-penber kids, and naomi misora's parents were all there too

after that she is always in Japan for her birthday

she and raia misora have 22 days between their birthdays so after the kira case closed and it was safe their guardians (mello/matt/niki & naomi misora's parents respectively) make sure they are always in the same city for their birthdays bc they are best friends

luci usually likes to do some sort of family activity (movie, museum, aquarium, ect.) and then have dinner with her family, the misora-penbers, and whoever in the task force & family wants to go (usually its matsuda & his partner & mogi & his husband)

happy birthday anghel keehl! have a bunch of fun facts about his birthday!

his birthday is on valentine's day!

this means he gets his pick of valentine's day themed chocolates and candies as his birthday snacks every year and he loves it

mello spoils this child on his birthday

anghel can't really have a birthday party bc he's really shy and moves schools often so he doesn't have a ton of friends growing up

so mello lets him do pretty much whatever he wants on his birthday

usually it's fun activities and a special dinner as a family (him, mello, matt, niki, blake, and luci)

he always gets cupcakes instead of cake

he doesn't like to think about his mom on his birthday

or in general but especially on his birthday

mello is quick to destract anghel if he notices something is reminding anghel of his mom

when he gets older (high school age) and they are living in a city in the US more permanently he will have birthday sleepovers with his best friend eden and a few of their other friends

anghel loves archery and thinks its really funny that he was born on valentine's day because of that

his family and eden make jokes about it

he's pretty good friends with jericho yagami (everyone is a little surprised by it) so he and jericho will usually facetime at some point on his birthday

his favorite ever birthday gift was his cat machete

his family takes him to see plays or musicals on his birthday

he doesn't like large birthday celebrations

so sayu came up with the idea of seeing shows instead of having a party

his maternal grandparents (kiyomi takada's parents) will visit if they are in the county (they moved after the kira case closed)

his sister picks out his cake every year

she always picks the perfect one

his birthday can be difficult because it reminds him of his parents

but sayu and sachiko do their best to remind him that he is his own person and he shouldn't feel guilt over others actions

his birthday gets harder before it gets easier but eventually it gets better and he's more open to celebrations

when he's in college his sister and his boyfriend plan a surprise day for him

not a surprise party but a surprise day full of his favorite things and only the people he's closest to

for years he considers it his best birthday

one year he insists on watching the movie groundhog day on his birthday

because anghel keehl and blake jeeves told him what groundhog day was after being in the US during it

he just thinks its a funny holiday and wanted to annoy people to watch the movie with him
