“caleb?” you whisper as you peek into his room from the door.

it’s late, and you both have to work tomorrow. but your brain won’t let you rest. his lights are off, window slightly open. the moonlight pours into a corner of the room.

when you see the slight up and down of his chest, you realize he’s asleep. which nowadays, is a good thing. you wanted to be the last person to interrupt that.

but a selfish part of you think it’s okay. it’s okay to go to him. because caleb is always there for you.

you tiptoe into his room, shutting the door gently. you expect him to wake up at some point in between, but there’s no reaction. you slowly walk to his bed, leaning over to see his peaceful expression.

caleb looks so cute like this.

you move the blanket up slightly, the mattress dipping slightly as you lay down beside him. for a little bit, you look at him. well, not really at him but his back.

bright, dependable, perfect caleb.

the urge comes over you silently, as you wrap your arms from behind him. you snuggle yourself into his back, not caring if he wakes up from your movements. he’s warm, gentle, protecting.

this is your caleb.

“p-pipsqueak?” he mumbles, hands on your arms as he shifts around to face you. you let him, immediately closing the distance as you snuggle up against his chest. he invades all of your senses, but you welcome it wholeheartedly.

“what’s wrong, baby?” he asks, caressing your hair and enveloping you in his arms entirely.

“couldn’t sleep, wanted to be with you.” you mumble against his chest, hugging him tightly as you try to move impossibly closer to him.

“yeah? i got you, honey.” he says, and you can hear the smile in his voice.

“love you.. g’night caleb.”

“g’night pipsqueak, i love you more.”

and as you fall asleep in each other’s arms, you think it’s okay to be selfish. because caleb will do anything for you.

Summary: So.. SLIGHT spoiler for the end of Chapter 4 in Death & Rebirth. But this is just something I thought about randomly, like if he left you in a different way idk. This is kind of one way I could imagine the story going towards the end, obviously it's not what actually happened.

I can only apologise for the hurt.

"YOU CAN'T DO THIS!" You stand frozen in place.

How could he just up and leave you after everything?

"YOU CAN'T JUST WALK AWAY LIKE THIS WAS ALL FOR NOTHING!"

Zayne doesn't say anything. He just stops walking, not turning, not looking back at you. Only looking forward.

"What do you think this is Zayne? What did any of this mean to you if you're going to up and leave like this the second it gets harder?"

Still nothing.

Tears begin to well in your eyes, but you hold them back as best you can. You can't falter, not now.

"I understand if you need a little time to get your head straight, but that doesn't mean resigning from the hospital and deserting everything you have worked so hard to achieve! Abandoning your home, abandoning me. You need to think about this clearly. I can help you."

"No." Oh.

"W-What? What do you mean no.. Zayne?" He turns to face you this time, but his eyes aren't looking at you.. they're looking through you.

"You can't help me Y/N. I must do this alone. You don't know the pain and suffering that I go through every day just knowing that I have killed so many innocent people who didn't deserve it" He stand firm, there is an anger behind his words.

This isn't him. This is not my Zayne.

"Zayne, whatever you did is done now. Leaving won't change anything, but going through the battle alone.. you won't survive. I promise I can help you, it's what I'm here for. We were brought together for a reason. Josephine asked you to take care of me for a reason! She knew that in taking care of me, I would take care of you. Please.. let me help you."

There is nothing you can do to prevent the tears from spilling over this time. You can't hold them back any longer.

This was it. He was really going to leave you.

"I- I need you." Your voice now barely a whisper.

"You don't need me Y/N. You have always been able to think about things, you've had a selection of people to vent to at times like these. When the explosion happened and you lost Josephine, and Caleb? You had me, I kept you grounded. You had multiple friends at the Hunters Association to keep you sane. They'll be there now. Hell, you HAVE Caleb again now. You two are more destined to be together than you and I could ever be."

Where was this coming from suddenly?

"What does Caleb have to do with any of this? Stop pushing me away. I choose you. I will always choose you."

"Goodbye Y/N." And with that, he turned and began walking away into the snow.

"No- NO!" You tried to run to him, but the snow had suddenly picked up making it harder to walk. Was this his doing? Was he preventing you from going after him? Since you couldn't run, you tried your best to get him to hear your pleas.

"ZAYNE."

my favourite part of the apothecary diaries is jinshi freaking out over maomao's impulsive freaky tendencies (but he's lowkey into that)

Yanno what I'm thinking. If he just grabs the back of her neck, pulls her forward and captures her lips in a heated kiss. Then she like runs her hands through his hair and grips TIGHT while they're just devouring each other. Then he can take her on that joyride.... that would've been swell.

Like they could have had the car chase already, or this could happen, then the kiss, then the car chase and then they pull over after it all because of the adrenaline or some shit and then he pulls her on top of him and the GO. TO. TOWN.
