Mysterious, secretive, reflective… beautiful.

The next step to learning astrology is, in my opinion, the most fun. The moon sign.

The sun will reveal a brighter, forced part of yourself, but the moon comes naturally. Just like the waves of an ocean, the moon sways our emotions and feelings. The sign your moon is in is also reflective of the you that you were as a child: shy and awkward or bright and talkative? The moon reveals all. Even when the sun does not shine on it, it still lingers there, hiding your secrets but still with a promise that what has been lost will be found.

So now; without further adu, my take on what your moon sign means for you. Heads up: this is gonna be a long one. I have spent YEARS taking note of someone’s birthday (famous people and close friends alike), specifically looking at the moon sign for them.

Moon in Aries

When the moon is in Aries, the emotions are rash, passionate, and childish. This “childish” doesn’t always act as a flaw, as it can sometimes be refreshing with someone who views things innocently and honestly. Despite being inattentive at times, these natives are perceptive to their emotional environments and “feel” things out rather directly. If something is bothering them, they are not shy at all when bringing it up. In fact, these individuals are rather good at talking about their feelings. The only time they falter at being direct is when they feel they’re being threatened emotionally in some way, and even then, subconscious body language is bound to give them away. Moon in Aries can be quite infuriating sometimes, but sometimes the truth they are trying to point out is where the real hurt comes from. These are amazing friends for keeping you in line and also complimenting you on your achievements.

Moon in Taurus

The moon in Taurus is stubborn, unmoving, and powerful. These natives can take a tremendous amount of emotional stress and pressure before they break. Unlike the comparatively easy-going Aries, the moon in Taurus thinks long and hard before expressing their feelings to others. When they finally do, they will stubbornly uphold everything they have and haven’t said. They are also very traditional, and may have conflicting thoughts regarding gender, for example, a born man may have trouble expressing feminine thoughts and vice versa for a born woman. These people also have a strong sense of loyalty. There are very few things which would convince them to betray their companions trust, especially in emotional matters.

Moon in Gemini

The nitty gritty of this sign is hard to pin down. Their emotions flow from one place to the next in a matter of seconds, yet not necessarily like water, the flow is more remiscent of the wind. Unlike Arian moons, these natives lack a hard substance in their emotions. Not to say that they aren’t there, because they certainly are, but they don’t have dramatic, passionate urges. In fact, they’re modes of handling emotion would be to approach it logically. Rarely will these individuals get caught up in the heat of a moment for anything other than sheer curiosity. These natives have a yearning to understand the human psyche and flow of emotion, but when it comes to their own, they have few dramatic instances.

Moon in Cancer

The moon in cancer is quite different from Gemini. It is extremely loyal, shy, and very much tangible. Their energy is like bounds of water held behind a dam. The emotions are not easily shared with others, and when it is, they need to have complete trust and honesty from the other person. Even those who are more open keep their deepest thoughts and feelings in some sort of containment. These individuals are also the first in this list to be the most intuitive. The water signs are much more privy to having an empathetic niche about them. For cancer, however, this empathy is more geared for their loved ones. For anyone else, the cancer native has their emotional curtains closed. In other words, they more easily handle blocking out unwanted energy than Pisces, but not as well as Scorpio.

Moon in Leo

The moon in Leo is dramatic, boisterous, and self-orientated. No matter how self-absorbed these natives may seem sometimes, they are perhaps one of the most self-aware of their emotions. They see their own energy clearly. Sometimes, this supposed self-absorption is just them trying to relate to the emotions of others. This self-awareness oft can turn into problems of self-consciousness. After all, seeing their flaws is just as easy, if not more, as seeing their best features. Leo doesn’t do well in the moon; it wants to shine, but only at the mercy of the sun. A Leo moon with a critical sun, like a Capricorn sun, is bound to have plenty of blockages of energy, especially around their sense of self. Nonetheless, the sunshine is STILL there, that fun and cool person, they just need to feel emotionally safe.

Moon in Virgo

The moon in Virgo is very particular, critical, and intelligent. For the Virgo moon native, their emotions may appear to them as different pieces of a puzzle they have yet to finish, or something that needs to be logically understood. While mutable like Gemini, the Virgo has more deep and sensual emotions. But similar to Leo, the only person the Virgo feels they have to prove themselves to is themselves. They fight their negative emotions more than others, and their perceptive nature lets them see every single flaw. The challenge for this native is to accept their imperfections, and find peace with the craziness of the world and their own psyche. This moon is less focused on the emotional nature of the world and more so with the emotional nature of themselves and those closest to them.

Moon in Libra

The moon in libra is flighty, sociable, and naturally shying away from conflict. The lunar Libran will find themselves fighting many emotions in the name of keeping the peace, even if it means their own unhappiness with the matter. Sometimes, they will even shy away from the conflict in their own mind, preferring to focus on more positive and “pretty” emotions rather than dealing with more darker matters. These natives are still intelligent and have an eye for beauty, but this part of them is subject to the scrutiny of their sun. This may make them more or less likeable. The biggest challenge for the moon in libra is find a way to express their true feelings without filtering or putting on a facade.

Moon in Scorpio

It is not clear whether Scorpio does or doesn’t thrive in the moon. Here, it is secretive, passionate, and intense. The natives have deep wells of emotions inside them, and they are only unleashed once in a blue moon. This sign is one of the most distrustful, with emotions this strong and powerful, those who are smart take care not to let them flow regularly all the time. This moon does not flow well with a sun that is boisterous and expressive, like a fire sign, because it draws upon a well that has long since been holed up. Lunar scorpios are transformative in nature. Their energy has the power to make or ruin someone else’s day. These are the people who, when angry, leave a scalding energy everywhere they walk. But when you befriend them, it can be very rewarding.

Moon in Sagittarius

The moon in Sagittarius is light-hearted, fleeting, and intelligent. These natives are one of the most adept at handling their feelings. Although they do have some yearning to make logic and sense of their emotions, their exploration of the mind is more so for the sake of curiosity than scrutiny. They have a need to have some sort of self-understanding and usually work well with others because their emotions just kind of “make sense” to them naturally. The Sagittarius moon is also somewhat optimistic when it comes to their emotions. They can easily approach their darker emotions with a sense of humor and live comfortably with their secrets. Their biggest challenge is probably this need for self-exploration, which can lead them to a sort of restlessness. They may feel trapped if circumstances do not allow for emotional freedom and exploration that they desire.

Moon in Capricorn

The moon in Capricorn is critical, practical, and punctual. These individuals experience emotion with a sense of apprehensiveness, because unlike other areas of life, emotions are not so easy to categorize and explain. Just like the Virgo moon, the lunar Capricorn can have a hard time because of their own critical nature. Self-consciousness is not unheard of with these individuals, and they may also have a hard time sharing and exploring their emotions. On the other hand, they are unlikely to have passionate and quickly passing emotions. While not as slow to anger as a Taurus, they also do take some time to break down because of their own determination to stay sane. As companions, the lunar Capricorn is also emotionally dependable and welcomes the energy of a loved one. They are the ultimate caregiver.

Moon in Aquarius

The moon in Aquarius is also another difficult one to pin down. In my experience, the lunar Aquarian has experienced something in their childhood that has stripped them of their ability to explore and express their own feelings. Emotion is stale and dry in the fixed wind sign, and while they do indeed have real and valid emotions, they are buried and encrypted deep within the logical and impersonal heart of the Aquarius. As a lunar Pisces, the lunar Aquarians I’ve been friends with have never failed to perplex me. At the end of the day it’s very difficult to find out what they really feel because that is hard to pinpoint for themselves. They might view their own feelings as “different” and quirky from those of others out of sheer will to not confront their feelings.

Moon in Pisces

The moon in Pisces is easily swayed, empathetic, and psychic. While the other signs are rather adept at hiding emotions if they want to, a lunar Pisces practically drips with emotions at all points. There are few walls to contain their feelings and it flows continuously from all points. Even a lunar Pisces who is rather quiet about their personal feelings will express subconscious body language that will give them away. Other moons knows they can easily trust or distrust this person from the moment they meet them. This sign is also bound to have problems creating boundaries. With their heart continuously on their sleeve, there is not a single one without a single story that has taught them to be more careful with their relationships and what they allow.

Planetary beauty

I reblogged a post by whizkalibra a bit ago saying that one can be good looking without Venus influence.

Then, I saw someone else mention that, by the time astrology started to develop, Venus was associated with beauty in relation to the specific cultural standards of the time and place. Sadly, I can’t find that person’s post, but if someone was kind enough to link me to that person’s commentary/post, I’d be very grateful and happy to give the due credit.

While I wasn’t really on that mindset much, that without Venus influence there can’t be beauty, it got me thinking a bit, especially the commentary from the person I’m not able to source yet. I started to conceive what types or styles of beauty came from each planetary influence.

This is all entering on my personal perceptions, so anyone is invited to disagree openly and debate this. I’m still learning.

In my opinion, planetary dominance, the houses in which each planet resides, and the ascendant’s influence, weight more into someone’s appearance than the individual signs in which each planet resides.

The planets anyone has in the 1st house are of high importance to the individual’s appearance, much more if they’re conjunct ascendant, and also other planets that aspect the ascendant in the shape of trines and sextiles.

Regarding other planets; take the example of Jupiter. Jupiter “enlarges” things. My figure stems mostly from my mom’s Polynesian family. My mom, sister and others on that side of our family have average or somewhat small boobs. Well, guess whomst hast Jupiter in the house of the titties the 4th house; this binch who has dysphoria (RIP me).

Before I go on to describe how, to me, planets and ascendant signs affect someone’s appearance, there’s a few things I’d like to clarify:

~ I will not address this subject from the viewpoint of gender essentialism. There’ll be no use of explicitly gendered language or anything alike.

~ I don’t see this as “people with this placement are short”, I see it more as “people with this placement can be short, appear shorter than they actually are, or be short compared to their (biological) families”.

~ There’s a tendency to categorize features in racialized ways, like associating racialized features with “harshness”, of (de)sexualizing racialized features, or forcibly assigning masculinity/ femininity to certain racialized features. I aim to combat that.

With all that said, let’s go onto the (hopefully) interesting part! Just keep in mind that these descriptions come from the sources I’ve been exposed to + my observations of the people around me.

Sun dominance ☀ | Leo rising

These people embody the concept of “radiant beauty”. They’re the kind of people who light up a room when they smile or laugh, they tend to have eyes that are not that big, and that laugh on their own, with round cheeks that pop up with the tiniest bit of a chuckle, even if the face is thin.

Many have something about their hair that makes it stick out from their overall appearances. You cannot help but notice their sudden presence even if they’re not doing anything special to get anyone’s attention (Which is a burden for the ones that are shy or socially anxious). People, quite literally, gravitate around them one way or another.

They have very broad smiles, even when their mouths are small. The eyebrows tend to be arched in a graceful way, and like Arian risings/Mars dominant people, there’s sparks in their eyes, but softer than their Martian siblings.

Moon dominance ☽ | Cancer rising

Their type of beauty is radiant too, like Solarian people, but in a more subtle or silent way. It’s a radiance that shines through the night; softly, tenderly, but it’s still the only light you see regardless.

These people are known for having rounder faces or rounder features. Their smiles aren’t as broad and loud as Solarians, but somehow their pouty smiles still catch your attention. I’ve noticed that while Cancerian/Lunar hair isn’t necessarily big or flashy, it always looks soft.

They give angelic or peaceful vibes, and seem to have soft bodies. There’s something mellow about them. Like other water rising or ruled people, their eyes stick out tremendously. They tend to be big, and very “watery”, many times they’re hooded or deep-set. They don’t carry their hearts on their sleeve, they carry their hearts in their eyes, and an ocean too.

Mercury dominance ☿ | Gemini or Virgo rising

Mercurian people have youthful looks. Not in that they don’t age, in the way that you may look at an elderly person, but see them laugh, move and talk like a child. Their bodies may be old, but their minds and spirits are blissfully childish, the curiosity children are born with never left them.

If their Mercurian influence is more on the Gemini side, they’ll feel a bit bohemian, and like they’re “jumpy”. They’re not exactly restless like fire risings, but still seem like they’re always moving – even when they’re not at all.

If the Mercurian influence is more on the Virgo side, they’ll look more serious than their airy counterparts. They look put together and modest, and their eyes seem like they’re staring at everything around them to analyze it and learn about it. Geminis have the beauty of mischievous fae, Virgos of scholarly elves.

Venus dominance ♀ | Taurus or Libra rising

Venusian people/risings always have something “pleasant” about them, or some sort of grace in the way they move. They move somewhat slow, as Taurus is lethargic and Libra indecisive, but they somehow manage to imprint beauty on that even if they’re just wearing pajamas. They still manage to make it elegant.

The Taurean Venusian is more sensual and has a more tangible sort of grace; you can pin down easily that it simply looks pleasant to the eye, like with flowers. The Libran Venusian is more ethereal, you can’t quite put into words what it is that makes them so delicate, but it’s there.

Unless there’s planets or signs such as Scorpio/Pluto or Aries/Mars giving significant influence, the Venusian stare is soft, although it’s not less calculating than those of their sister signs/planets.

Mars dominance ♂ | Aries rising

People with strong Aries or Martian influence (sometimes Scorpian) have the beauty of a warrior. Their beauty can be intimidating or strong, at times coarse, and like I mentioned before, they spark. They look like they’re set ablaze.

They expel energy and passion with every breath they give. Their movements can be very well calculated, like a military tactician, or clumsy, like an impulse-ridden fighter; what all these people share is that they hardly ever move slowly.

Their beauty is about as loud as the beauty of Solarians/Leonians, but a lot less meant to attract (even if it does too), and much more meant to strike. Like Mercurian or Gemini-heavy people, they look youthful when this energy comes from Aries instead of Scorpio, but reminiscing a child that you can’t get to go to bed.

Jupiter dominance ♃ | Sagittarius rising

The symbol of Sagittarius is an arrow, and like arrows, a good word to describe the looks of Jupiterian/Sagittarian people, is “sharp”. They tend to have angular or pointier features, elongated features too, especially the nose and facial frame. Those who draw their Jupiterian energy from Pisces have less pointy shapes, but retain the elongated qualities. There’s a tendency to be taller.

The world is a bundle of open adventures to them, and they reflect their awe and thirst for experience in their expressions and movements. Everything seems to fascinate them, and they feel no need to hide it. Their movements appear as if they were trying to “touch” things, to reach out to the world that surrounds them.

Their laughs are thunderous, yet, even when they startle you, they don’t bother you. It’s an endearing laugh. Unlike Martians and Mercurians, they tend to look somewhat older than they are, they have an air of powerful and jovial wisdom.

Saturn dominance ♄ | Capricorn rising

Like Jupiterians, Saturnines have an appearance that denotes wisdom, but it’s a much heavier type of wisdom, as opposed to the jovial Jupiterian wisdom.

Their eyes, like sometimes Plutonian eyes too, don’t reflect much light, almost as if they were dry. The titan Saturn/Cronus is the devourer, and indeed, Saturnines/Capricorn risings tend to have bigger mouths, even when the lips are thin, and their cheeks many times are hollow. They have a preference for more conservative, timeless looks.

There’s a particular type of silent strength with these people; they carry heavy elder wisdom, but do so with such calm and grace that it’s admirable. This is a mature, discrete and simple beauty! However, this beauty gets less traditional or more defying when the Saturnine airs come from Aquarius instead of Capricorn.

Uranus dominance ♅ | Aquarius rising

Uranus is the planet of rebellion, so it’s to be expected for these people to have unique and quirky styles of beauty. They enjoy disruption, which isn’t something necessarily violent! Just something that breaks the mold.

These people tend to have “contradictory” features; such as highly angular sharp features paired with a soft set of eyes. I’ve noticed that many have sharply pointed and narrow noses. Their stares are always inquisitive, they appear to be scanning you for information at all times, but not in an intimidating way (Scorpio) or in a criticizing way (Virgo).

They are like the sky; they look distant, but not for a lack of interest, it’s the complete opposite of that – they want to watch over and see how the world plays out in front of their eyes, to learn and internalize from it, from you and me.

Neptune dominance ♆ | Pisces rising

The thing that really sets Neptunians/Pisceans apart from Lunarians/Cancerians, is that the former seem so lost in a far away space, so dreamy and sleepy, that their watery expressiveness is much more aloof, blurry and fuzzy.

They have something soft to them as well, but the style is more slippery. They glitter beautifully, but like a fish, if you try to touch them, they’ll dodge. Neptunian/Piscean beauty looks like it comes from a far away fantasy world, full of romance and magic. They have very glossy eyes, however, there’s not an inclination for them to be big as there’s with Lunarians/Cancerians.

They instinctively pull their stare away from yours when the two meet. They move indecisively, but steadily, like a changing river. They have the beauty of sleep in themselves, and, like Taureans, often move slowly. It’s to be expected from the two signs that surround the restless Aries!

Pluto dominance ♇ | Scorpio rising

Plutonian/Scorpian people are (in)famous for one thing about their appearance; their intense, penetrating, piercing eyes, you name it. According to my experience, most of these people can go from their eyes looking entirely opaque, to looking extremely watery from one second to another. Their eyes are usually sharp or almond shaped, up-pointing.

There’s something alluring about them, or that might even look dangerous. They ooze sexuality, not in an obvious way usually; it’s an air of underlying passion that can only be unleashed within intimacy.

They’re both silent and loud; despite their silence and compulsive privacy, they still attract the sights of others like a magnet, many times against their own efforts. The Plutonian/Scorpian beauty is deadly, it stings and intoxicates, but it also mesmerizes you.

As Lunar Children

As children, we are thought to act mostly from our emotional reactions and impulses, which in astrology, is represented by the Moon. Therefore the sign our Moon is in can reveal much about our personality expression as babies and children, up to a more mature age, where then, through growth and experience, our Sun also comes into play, adding a much more layered effect.

A child with their Moon in Aries would be confident and demanding, someone that shows innate leadership skills very early on. They would react to their emotions straight away, whether they are deemed “appropriate” or not, and would also show protective instincts, especially when it comes to smaller or younger children. Would be looked at as a “strong” child, but equally with emotional vulnerability.

A child with their Moon in Taurus would like to stay close to home and people they are familiar with, and may show anxiety or discomfort when forced into new situations. They would likely seem older than their age, described as mature, and would be creative and expressive, though reservedly when around those they do not fully trust. There would be a nurturing instinct in them too, whether to other children, or nature in general.

A child with their Moon in Gemini would be excitable and light spirited, even to the point of becoming easily distractible. They would enjoy mischief and outsmarting those around them, even those of much older age. Words and language likely intrigued them from the start, as well as story telling and theatrics. They might have been easily swept by more consistent or demanding personalities, but always reserved a wit that was unmistakable.

A child with their Moon in Cancer would be very receptive to the environment around them, maybe seeming easily provoked into an emotional response, or quick to pick up on the emotions of others, becoming upset if someone else was. There would be a creativity that came from them early on, the ability to nurture an idea or their imagination. There could be a shyness to them at first, but a surprising amount of will that would soon follow. 

A child with their Moon in Leo would be fiery and spirited, someone that flourished when they were the canter of attention and affection, maybe even to the point of being reliant on it and showing off. Even so, there would be an innate sense of right and wrong, of justice and what is fair, even if they don’t always follow this, putting their ego first. Shame would soon follow though, and they would once again return to their internal rules.

A child with their Moon in Virgo could appear fussy and easily disgruntled, someone that notices much of the details of what goes on around them. There would be a matter of fact quality to them, but with an underlying care and helpfulness. They may search for approval from their elders, trying to be high achievers or appear disciplined, without needing assistance. Yet, there would also be a wit and humour too, grounded in its expression.

A child with their Moon in Libra would value friendship, maybe even needing a “best friend” over others at times for their own sense of ease. There would be a natural interest in people, maybe in other children with different backgrounds or experiences to them, and they may find conflict or augments particularly upsetting. They could be attracted to physically pretty things, things that have a certain flair to them.

A child with their Moon in Scorpio may find that they can draw something powerful out in others from an early age, can get a reaction that even they may not understand at their young age, which can make them feel somewhat odd. There would be strong emotions stirring in them, but also this ability to see beauty in the things that others may discard, or the things that haunt others. They would feel the safest with strong attachments.

A child with their Moon in Sagittarius would be the ones to tread dirt into the house, never pay attention to time limits, to speak when they have been told to be quiet, and to answer back should they view something as wrong. They would be the spirits that need an element of freedom, even as children, not prioritising what others tell them they should prioritise. They would enjoy making others laugh too, in getting that reaction.

A child with their Moon in Capricorn would have a sense of what they want for their future, even if this ultimately changed, of looking forward to comparing the now and then and seeing what they have done in that time. A child with their Moon in Pisces would be someone that both enjoyed the quiet times of imagination and creativity, but also the ability to slot themselves into wherever they were needed, able to morph into the people that surrounded them.
