Hello, CAMPers!
2015 is already proving to be a promising year for the mushroom farmers working with CAMP. We are excited to share a quick update and a few new pictures. We hope you enjoy all of it. Let us know what you think, ok? We love your comments and messages.
With compassion,
Doctor Deb and the CAMP Team
2015 Compassion in Action Mushroom Project Update
 New and improved:
After looking at what worked best and what we could do better, we’ve tweaked the program a bit. A number of women are now working through the new and improved training and techniques. With luck and hard work, this will mean even more mushrooms and better harvests for farmers. Look at all the mushrooms recently packed for Faith’s farm. Her next harvest should be epic!
 Farmers Market
In addition to growing mushrooms for their own tables, some farmers like Sarah are packaging dried mushrooms to sell in local shops or markets.
 Made in the Shade
All farms require a shade for keeping mushrooms in the cool dark places where they can thrive, but shades can come in many shapes and sizes. The women working with CAMP tailor their mushroom farms to their needs and preferences. As a result, each farm is unique. Check out the pictures to see how Sarah, Teddy and Topister have made their shades.
More Compassion. More Action. More Mushrooms.
We are looking forward to growing even more mushrooms through CAMP this year. Plans for expansion are incubating – just like mushrooms need to incubate before they start to grow.
Be sure you don’t miss our next update. Sign up to get an email when we post CAMP news.
A special thanks to Noah @ Chimpanzees Trust Uganda for taking all the photos, which (of course) are used here with permission.

Visiting the area where the CAMP pilot was taking place not only gave us a chance to sit down with Dr. Kasaija, it was also a chance to get out into the field to see where and how human-wildlife conflict are happening around Hoima. As you know, conflict is one of the main motivations for CAMP, so this was a critical part of the expedition.
We met with the field operations team from CTU in Hoima and visited one of the forest monitoring sites. It made for a successful day of team work. Photos in the gallery below show both activities.

CAMP Field Report: I felt so lucky to have the chance to meet some of the women who were about to start the CAMP training and their very own mushroom farms. Since I had met Margaret Mary, seen the classroom and had a run through on the training, I was also super excited for what was coming next for the women themselves.
Our meetup took place at Kyamaleera Wildlife Education Center (KWEC). The Center was built through a partnership between Chimpanzee Trust Uganda and the local communities, which own and operate the center. After checking in with managers of the community association, CAMP stakeholders came together with questions, ideas, smiles and celebration.
Trying new things can be exciting but also a little intimidating. Participants in the pilot project would be feeling that push and pull dynamic later in the weekend. While at KWEC it was our turn listen and learn – not just about mushrooms. See for yourself in the video below.
Enjoy!
With compassion.
Doctor Deb

Hello, CAMPers!
Hope your week is off to a great start. I wanted to share some of the photos from my recent visit to Uganda so you could have an boots-on-the-ground view of how the project is going. I was brought to tears more than once to see the progress and potential. Thanks to everyone in the CAMP community for helping to make it happen. Here are some pics from the morning the whole thing started as we set out to drive from Entebbe to Murchison Falls National Park.

CAMP photos from Uganda: Bonus video and the part that made me weep
While we were at MJS picking mushrooms and taking photos, Mukasa also shot a video. You’ll see I didn’t realize it at first; I was waiting for the flash, but when I finally caught on, I said a few impromptu (and somewhat awkward) words. Oh well. I hope you can tell from the look on my face that I was over-the-moon happy.
After the video was filmed, Nellie shared how happy she was to have the…

Hello, CAMPers!
We have an important update to share with friends and supporters of the Compassion in Action Mushroom Project. Ready?
The first round of CAMP participants have completed their training! This is a huge milestone for CAMP and we want to celebrate with you by sharing a few photos. Before you check out the gallery below, I want to take this opportunity to thank Silver for being the heart, soul and brains behind this project as well as Dr. Magrate Kasaija for providing her expertise as a trainer.
You know who else I want to thank? You! A big thank you pant-hoot to everyone who donated and supported the CAMPaign so that this dream could become a reality. We’re honored to have you as part of the CAMP community. Don’t forget that you can find us on Facebook, Twitter and right here on the blog where you can always use the CAMP message center to drop us a line.
Best wishes,
-Doctor Deb and the CAMP Team
