I’ve seen a couple of comments that it seemed out of character or even lacking in foresight that Holmes thought he could stand a chance against Sigurd. I’m tempted to bring Holmes on his boss fights when the time comes, though. And you know what, they’re right - it’s not quite smart of Holmes to fight a losing battle! Except when he knows what’s at stake.

Because of everything that transpired prior to exploring the Lostbelts, I feel like he’s taking full responsibility for all the lives in the Shadow Border. Therefore, he places the survival of many as his priority, even if his actions would not change anythign. He knows the stakes - outside of him, Da Vinci and Mashu, everyone else on board is not a Servant. The moment Sigurd catches up to them, they will die. Of course, there is a chance that they would survive, and deep down Holmes knows that Chaldea could still function, as long as their key figures continue to live on.

But it wasn’t a chance he was willing to risk.

I think Holmes knew there was a chance that he might die due to his actions, but at the same time it was a small enough chance that he was willing to wager his life just to make sure the rest of Chaldea could be unscathed. Of course, he would prefer there to be of no casualties - their losses have been heavy already - but in the worst case scenario, he knows that at least Da Vinci would be able to take over his duties. They are both geniuses, after all.

So, in conclusion - directly engaging Sigurd was not the best strategic move that he could take. But in ensuring the least number of casualties, it was what he saw as his best solution.

And it was worth it.

P.S. My goodness Holmes you’re fatally injured and all did your ragged coat have to end up being this pretty

It has already been a little more than two weeks since Sherlock Holmes was summoned by the Moon Cell and wishing to work for Hakuno Kishinami and her Servant, Nero. Hakuno’s general impression of the detective was that he was a gentleman but some part of her felt like he was also a very smug asshole. She couldn’t quite place her finger on why she felt that way, it was more of a hunch than anything else. 

Hakuno tried to get closer to the detective since he joined Rome but he always seems to elude her. Making up some sort of excuse and avoiding her. Perhaps he didn’t want to be on friendly terms with Hakuno. 

Which is why she was surprised to see him approach her first. 

“A murder case?”

“You want me to join you? Are you sure?” 

In the first place, Hakuno’s detective skills were mediocre at best. She was ok at guessing what type of pattern the enemy was going to do but actually solving a mystery was completely different. She still looks the same as ever.

Even under a critical lens, this Hakuno seemed no different from the days before. The same clear brown eyes, the same lilt in her voice, even her expressions - there was no doubt that this woman before him was truly Hakuno Kishinami.

And yet he knew, in the deepest of his heart, that she was not his Hakuno.

It was why he kept his distance from her this entire time. Even when he was already under Nero’s employ. It was enough to make sure she was safe, but to initiate something more than that...the pain was still too close to bear. He could still remember the weight of her fallen form, the bright red blood that stained his eyes. He has seen many dead bodies both as a detective and as a Servant, and yet only a handful of incidents has shaken him to this extent.

But eventually curiosity got the better of him. What is she like, now that she has proved herself winner of the Holy Grail War? How does she handle the affairs of the Moon Cell. And most importantly...do her feelings for him remain the same?

“ Of course, Miss Hakuno. A second pair of eyes, no matter how untrained, can still prove valuable in an investigation. ” Watson proved his merit in this regard - not only did he manage to pick up his methods, he was also a reliable ally to throw his ideas to. “ Furthermore, as the current wielder of the Regalia, you have a responsibility of supervising the territories under your rule. ”

Not that a series of murders would cause much trouble in a land governed by Servants, but as detective it was a matter he couldn’t simply ignore.

Holmes might be calm and composed when it comes to investigating crime scenes, but he doesn’t handle it well when someone close to him is in danger of dying. He’s used to being the sacrifice, used to making elaborate schemes to fake his death yet again because it’s better for him to be the target instead.

He’s not used to his close companions being in danger of dying, and that’s why if they do it hits him hard. That’s why he took Jekyll’s fate so personally. Most of the time he sucks at showing how much he cares about their presence but he does and he would do everything he could to protect them.

So when Da Vinci died I feel like he’s holding up a strong front. He never got the time to mourn - he has to keep what remains of Chaldea together and make sure things still keep operating, after all. There’s also the fact that Da Vinci Lily is there - but it’s a different Da Vinci, she may have her personality and memories but it’s a different identity altogether.

Holmes hates it when he’s the one left standing.

Hakuno was looking extremely unsatisfied right now. "...you really can't do anything else, can you?"

There she goes, pouting again. Their relationship has always been rocky at points, but as far as he knew, he has performed his duties admirably. They were a successful team - perhaps Hakuno desired something other than that?

Holmes breathed out from his pipe, talking like he had no care in the world.

“ I'm a consulting detective, anything else would be out of my expertise. ”
