Just to be all the way empty
I read this in a book and thought of you...
'Caught there, caught in that second of realisation and awareness, when everything came into quick focus and this thing, this event I'd stumbled into was all around me and instant and real, I wanted it to happen. I wanted to let my knees buckle. Let my shoulders slump, just let it all go - fall forwards, down and finally, thankfully, out. This monster river could take me away and unknot me and spread me out however it wanted and however it liked because, honestly, finally, I just felt so fucking tired of endless hours of doing my shitty best to cling my component parts together as a human being. I wanted to pile up and silt-slide, wrap around the trunks of trees, a lost nothing of unthinking debris and high watermarks. Just to be all the way empty, just to be all the way gone.'

so this is what it feels like to be forgotten
It's amazing, really, how time and space affects the things we hold dear. Move something far enough away for a long enough period of time, and eventually it becomes something new, like a photocopy with a few colors switched up. You're sure it's nearly the same thing, but instinctively you know that the version you cherished is never coming back. This new, slightly altered version is all that's left, even if it doesn't quite fit the way you remember it.
When this modified photocopy is something you've used as an anchor in the roughest of seas, it's quite difficult watching this transformation. Especially when you know it means your importance to this ever-changing image is gradually dwindling. On the outside, maintain the act that everything is fine, while deep inside you know that nothing will ever be able to fill the void that has emerged over time.
Grin and bear it, being forgotten is the loneliest business.
