I hate to admit it but I feel so lonely here. I expected the language barrier to be a problem, whereas the real issues are the cultural barrier (I wouldn't really describe it as a 'shock') and the age gap (which factors in in weird ways)
It's weird talking to PhD students because most of them are younger than me but academically they are my seniors. Also weird talking to Bachelor's students because they view me as a senior but in my mind 3rd and 4th year students have seniority over me because they've been here for longer than I have. First year BTechs are mostly minors so it's easier to think of them as being junior but then I'm constantly overthinking my interactions with them because I fear I may come off as condescending or something. My classmates are low-key the most boring people I've ever met, and I'm probably the most boring person they've ever met, so while we get along well we don't really have any common interests or a shared sense of humour which makes casual conversation challenging. I only made it through the last year because of the queer friends I made here, and the queer club meetings which were the only bright spots in most of my weeks here
#Doesn't help that I've grown more introverted in the one year I've been here#Though I do see how I'm different from when I was younger. 20-year old me would not have survived this.#My best friend atm is a gay guy 7 years younger than me who asks me for (gay) relationship advice which is the funniest thing ever#considering I have never been in one AND have no interest in being in one#I have clarified this to him but he's adamant that it helps to have my perspective#which is wild because I literally have no idea what I'm talking about when I share my opinion like I'm pulling stuff out of my ass here#while my internal monologue is like 'this is so much effort for something which is supposed to bring you joy and contentment'#How do people even do romantic relationships like I understand being in love but the conventional relationship standards sound exhausting#What do you even talk about almost daily how do you not get on each other's nerves#I got carried away a bit there but seriously everything I learn about dating further turns me off it#But I'm also lonely? Make it make sense#I want to be friends with people but not 'casually' but to get there you kinda have to go through the casual phase

Stressed as fuck. Pictures of your pets or cool non-human organisms you've encountered would be an appreciated diversion.
#I have a lot of photos of trees and logs but idk if they spark joy for anyone else so I didn't include them#I have a lot of photos of deer as well but those fuckers are not photogenic at all#I love the tiny lotus pond near one of our academic buildings it's a very tranquil place#Those green areas are usually dry land. only in monsoon those areas fill up with water and algae floats on the surface#This was my first time seeing so much algae and so vibrant in colour too#Idk how common monkeys are to other areas but there are hordes here and it's my first time dealing with them so up close#You can't take food or even innocuous open bags outside or they'll snatch it from you#Thrice now monkeys have also clung to my backpack while it was on my back and tried to open it (and succeeded once)#Very scary experience especially since I had my laptop in there but thankfully they found an orange first and that appeased them#Sorry this is not relaxing at all but fun maybe?#hmmmmm

#@prev TIL it is called bahava. my mother always pointed those flowers out to me as those used by malayalis for Vishu#I literally only thought of them as Vishu chi fule 😭#My absolute favourites are shevanti (chrysanthemum) and aboli (crossandra/firecracker flower) but they are hardly underrated

This is just me being kinda obnoxious but being good at a certain subject at uni sucks because you then end up having to become an unofficial (and hence unpaid) TA for the rest of your class, or else you earn the reputation of being a stuck up bitch. Uni doesn't reward talent or hard work, it just means you get more leaches attached to you
#Some of my classmates begged me to go to the department on saturday (a holiday) to explain them a thing#But on the way I got accosted by a senior phd student (she used to be project staff hence like super senior to me)#Then later after spending an hour helping her and 2-3 hours helping said classmates I went to do some other work in the dept computer room#And got approached by two people from that class whom I don't even know#Sunday I was woken up by two of my classmates knocking loudly on my door and I had to answer their doubts while still barely awake#and what's nuts is that after some time in that interaction I was just sitting there still half asleep#while they were discussing loudly among themselves in a language I don't undersand and writing on my notebook#which like. you can do outside. in your own rooms. why am I a part of this#Then today some random guy came sat with me after class and I had to help him with his code while doing my own#Also forgot when one of my classmates got mad at me for not sharing my code for an exam with her as she was taking the make-up exam#like. it was highly likely the prof won't change questions and even if he did that's my code?#The coding isn't even hard like the prof basically gives us most of the code and you just have to fill in some of the parts based on maths#which also isn't hard#Ok calling every one of them leaches is harsh and not completely true but damn this weekend is the last time I'll get to relax in a while#and they kind of ruined it for me like I enjoy the subject but that doesn't mean I want to think about it during my free time#Rant
