define:TraNsition is collection of black and white portraiture, which illustrates the full-blown-beauty of trans* and gender independent individuals, through the emerging art genre: poetography [poʊə-ˈtɑɡrə-fi]. The collection was created by Jan Johnson, a photographer who seeks to have the viewer “see things differently,” and the poem was written by Boston Davis Bostian, a rhythm poet, relentlessly bent on transition.
define:TraNsition, the collection, includes 41 images of 20 different individuals. In addition to a close-up of each trans*beautiful participant, there is second “partnering” photo on which phrases of the define:TraNsition poem is over-laid. These partner photos make up the heart of the poetography collection and will become the pages of the book.
The 20 trans*beautiful define:TraNsition participants hail from Washington D.C. to Pasadena, California, as well as Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Carolina, Colorado, New York, New York and even Pflugerville, Texas! Nine of the twenty participants are from the greater Houston area.
